Norm Peterson Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Not in terms of his looks but in terms of his game. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 14, 2014 Author Report Posted March 14, 2014 Shields I would say Doncha think? Give Shields another year and I think the similarities will seem even more apparent. Quote
royalfan Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Nobody really reminds of his type of game very much. He has quick release and deadly shooter but can also do a lot of other things. Ray probably closest but doesn't remind me of him all that much. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 14, 2014 Author Report Posted March 14, 2014 I'm not talking about Gordon Hayward of the Utah Jazz. I'm talking about Gordon Hayward of the Butler Bulldogs. And I'm thinking Sophomore Shavon Shields has a lot in common with Sophomore Gordon Hayward. Quote
GATA Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 This might seem like a stretch, but Shields' game reminds me of the aging Paul Pierce. He isn't the most athletic, but he understands pace and angles and has a great herky, jerky drive to the basket. Quote

aphilso1 Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Shavon's game is comparable. I think Hayward had a much quicker first step, but both guys are probably more "smooth" than "explosive." Keep in mind that Hayward left after his sophomore year, so he was playing at a lottery pick level at Shavon's current career point. Still, I can see similarities. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 14, 2014 Author Report Posted March 14, 2014 I agree aphilso. Shavon isn't quite at that level but the games are similar. More smooth than explosive is a great way to describe it. But both have good length (Shields at 6'7" and Hayward at 6'8") and are deceptively athletic, surprisingly adept ball-handlers, good at getting to the rim and good shooters (although Hayward is obviously much better, I think Shavon will continue to improve in this category.) They both have very high hoops IQs. They both have great feel for the game. And there've been times this year where Shavon will do something very Gordon-esque, like a dribble drive, jump-stop, pump-fake, reverse spin move and up for a bucket. They both came out of HS fairly unheralded. Both were Rivals 3 star recruits. Hayward had a marginally better offer list but neither was a Rivals 150 player. Not saying Shavon is exactly like him or that he'll ever be quite as good, but their games seem very similar to me, particularly with the way Shavon, at his size, can get to the rim on the dribble and finish.
