I don't want to be outrecruited by Northwestern.  We'll have to see how that plays out over 3-5 years, but right now Collins is having more success than Miles.  I know there's a lot that goes into recruiting that helps NU and hurts Nebraska, but I'll be using them as somewhat of a benchmark for at least a few years.

For reference: http://rivals.yahoo.com/northwestern/basketball/recruiting/commitments/2014

Who cares? Petteway was a 3 star. Would you trade him for any of the Northwestern players or recruits? I do believe that recruiting rankings make a difference, so don't get me wrong. But I also believe that an astute evaluator of talent can beat the system and find players who will develop into great players. In my opinion, it is difficult to fast forward from being considered a losing program to signing 4 star players without the step where you demonstrate you can win with mid level talent.

Isn't that what Chris Collins just did?

No, because he hasn't shown he can win yet.

He's also in Chicago. I'd imagine the Collins name carries some weight around there.

That's my point.

He hasn't won.

Northwestern hasn't been good.

He did sign a 4 star player.

You can either demonstrate you're a good coach who can build a winner or you can be the son of a NBA legend who played under a college legend who has roots in the area that you're now coaching in that is bursting with basketball talent.

The Big 10 just keeps getting better in basketball

I wonder about that 4-star kid and whether he really merited that kind of national ranking because his offer list wasn't mind-blowing like you'd expect.  I mean, he had offers from the two local programs in Illinois and Northwestern.  Aside from that, his offers looked fairly decent but not wow.  And the last Rivals 150 kid Northwestern landed, Kale Abrahamson, once I saw him in person, I thought why the heck?  So glad he signed with them and not us.  Don't think I could have tolerated watching that bizarre-looking jump shot in a Husker uniform for 4 years.

So, yeah, they signed a kid with 4 stars, so ...

But I get what jdostal is saying.  It's something to keep an eye on.

It's really all I'm saying.  Just throwing out a benchmark.

No, and you're absolutely right.  In order to compete with the teams in this league, we have to win some recruiting battles.  And if we get the kind of players that other teams in the bottom of the league are getting, well, that'll probably correspond somewhat to where we'll be finishing when the games are played.  Because let's face it.  You don't find a lot of bad coaching in this league.
