Huskerpapa Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 ...and as a result, I very much agree with the ratings produced by Basketball Power Index. tcp and seaofred92 2 Quote
Shuttlesworth Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 Where are you seeing this? I'm seeing 63 and out. Quote
trickey Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 Basketball Power Index we are #63 and in. I sure hope we end up rated WAY better than this or we will not make the dance,,, Please recall all the auto qualifiers from conference tournaments. You typically need to be under #50 if you want to be dancing with a wildcard spot! Quote
ajb5856 Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 Yes way out according to the BPI. Those are all at-large teams ahead of us in that so...need to prove that ranking a bit. Quote
GoBigRed Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 I'm not sure what the BPI is, but I see a lot of teams ahead of us that are nowhere near the bubble according to BracketMatrix, so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to take from this. Quote
TomEadesSucks Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 BPI is a meaningless rating made up by ESPN. Has no determination on who makes the tourney, just ESPN trying to promote their ideas on the rest of us. Shuttlesworth and husker11 2 Quote
colhusker Posted February 26, 2014 Author Report Posted February 26, 2014 Oops I miss read it then. Sorry Quote
colhusker Posted February 26, 2014 Author Report Posted February 26, 2014 Okay looked again and based on this link it appears we are #63 with teams that are in ahead of us. Quote
ajb5856 Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 BPI is a meaningless rating made up by ESPN. Has no determination on who makes the tourney, just ESPN trying to promote their ideas on the rest of us. It's just another rating system to go along with RPI, KenPom, Sagarin, etc. Its ESPNs version and it's billed as a way to 'rank' teams based on their NCAA tournament resumes. It's similar to kenpom or Sagarin in that it accounts for adjusted pace of play and uses margin of victory as a component. One of the ways it differs from kenpom and Sagarin is that there is a diminished effect based on margin of blowout win. A 30 point win isn't worth double what a 15 point win is. I think it's only 20% greater. RPI is actually very limited since it only accounts for home/road wins and losses, winning percentage, opponents winning percentage, and opponents-opponents winning percentage. The BPI also claims to adjust for players missing games due to injury based on average minutes played. So if you get a big win, but the team you faced was missing a key player, you wouldn't get as much credit. Quote

Just like the QBR stat the created for football its meaningless. Quote
ajb5856 Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 Okay looked again and based on this link it appears we are #63 with teams that are in ahead of us. But the little guy automatic qualifiers from all the rinky dink tournaments are not ranked ahead of us in the BPI. So we would be a ways off from the tournament if you're just thinking that 68 teams make it and we are 63. Quote
TomEadesSucks Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 Just now, ESPN compared 2 teams tournament resumes, using their record against the BPI top 50 as if it had any meaning. No mention of RPI. If ESPN wants to put it up on their website fine, but using it when comparing tournament resumes is disgusting self-promotion. HuskerActuary 1 Quote
royalfan Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 Lets face it. RPI is kind of a joke. Granted Miles understands how to control it to our benefit. Doesn't mean it is a good tool to use by the selection folks. Quote
