Shields 21 points 5 rebounds and 7 assists. That's a solid night. Benny and Tai combined for 13 points 6 rebounds 7 assists 3 to's. A little better night. White 20 points 4 rebounds Team had 19 assists on 22 made fg's. Also shot 12-28 from 3. Now, 39.7 % from 3 for the year. -

Delaware State shooting 47 % tonight. That number is way too high. -

Ball movement must be really good. Kent struggling to keep up with all the passes. -

7 of 13 from deep, 14 of 28 shooting overall, 11 of 14 from the line. 17-11 rebounding edge. DSU shot 46 percent from field, though, and 44 percent from deep. I've been disappointed with our defense this year. We need to play defense, otherwise what happened against Nova will happen more. We are not going to consistently score 80 points a game, especially when we play the better teams in the Big 10. Need to get to that lock-down defense, IMO. I just hope the young-ins figure it out. You need that balance. You can't have Tai and Benny who can't score, but play good defense. You also can't have the freshmen who can get buckets, but can't stop guys on the other end. -

uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: ed 8, vol 2 - Villanova
brfrad replied to uneblinstu's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I agree 15 shots is too many. But I'm more concerned with his percentages. He was 0-fer from three and 33% overall. If he'd shot 40% from 3 tonight (2/5 instead of 0/4) he'd have finished with 18 pts on 7/15 shooting. If he hits even 1 of those treys, he's 15 points on 40% shooting overall. I'd be more than OK with that. I think the key shot for him will be that floater in the lane. If he can hit that shot consistently, it will draw that big man away from the rim, and lead to an easy dish and dunk to a teammate. I do agree with you, his shot is way too flat. He needs to work on some arc. -
You could see the differences in the offenses. We dribbled the ball around, while Nova moved the ball and found the open man.

uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: ed 8, vol 2 - Villanova

There's not many teams better than Villanova, especially when you are playing them in the 2nd game of the year with loads of freshmen. This team failed on the defensive end. Villanova got shots way too easy. As I said before, we have to play defense, take care of the ball, and shoot the ball. Watson is going to get shots, but I don't think 15 shots for him is going to win us games. He needs to be more of a distributor. It was nice to see Benny hit that first shot, but after that it was downhill. He is liability on the defensive end. Whatever that good player's name is, could rise right above Benny. If you want my true opinion, Watson needs to start over Benny, not Webster. Webster did not play well, at all. I thought he played really good defense, until we got up by 7. After that, he was awful all around. He needs to drive to the basket, either look for an open shooter, or take it to the rim. Then, he needs to pay lock down defense. White is the shooter we need. I think he will be more efficient than Terran was. He doesn't seem to take that crazy shot. I think he will open some lanes for Shields and Webster. Shields hit a couple 3's. That's a good sign. Couldn't get to the rim like he usually does. Hammond needs to be locked in a weight room during practice. Nova's big guy just pushed him wherever he wanted him to go. Marrow is an animal down low, but also needs to get some upper body weight. McVeigh also will be a good shooter, but a liability on the defensive end. This team needs to get back to work, and put this beating behind them. -
We are -14 in turnovers. 20 for us and 6 for them. That is the difference in the game.

This team has to improve a bunch this year. Granted, they are playing an experienced and talented team. Ball movement on offense is terrible. We have no defensive intensity. Villanova is getting any shot they want. A great learning experience for the young guys. This Nebraska team looks like they will be good. This year is not going to be a good year, and it sucks for Shields and Benny, who laid the foundation for this team.
-
It's better than playing a bunch of MVSU's. I think we are going to be alright. We are going to struggle against teams with a competent big man that can shoot the ball. Against those teams might have to experiment with a match-up zone. We can NOT turn the ball over. I'm glad these refs are going to make it look better.
-
That Villanova player just extended his arm on Benny. I didn't think you could do that anymore?
-
Villanova has 2 fouls in the 2nd half? How is that possible? We have to learn to be STRONG with the ball.
-
Maybe we should just put a wrestling mat on our end of the floor, so it doesn't hurt our guys when Villanova body slams us. A couple things, we need Hammond to get locked into the weight room.
-
I'm trying to figure out how the same play when Tai has the ball, it is a travel, but when Villanova has the ball, it is a foul on us? I guess when your #11 in the country playing at home against a team that is not very good, it is the calls you get.
-
We need Tai on the defensive end, but he has to produce on the offensive end. He would be really good with a big man. I think with Morrow he would be able to distribute when the big man went to block his shot.
-
Getting to the free throw line would also help.
-
So much for refs calling contact this year. It must of went out the window that quickly. Need to keep driving and maybe, just maybe these refs will call a foul to get us to the free throw line. We need to be stronger with the ball. 13 turnovers in a half will kill you every time. That's 13 chances we don't get to score. We are -9 in shots taken, FG's and FT's.
-
I am shocked Villanova has 5 fouls called against them. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't knock Morrow into the front row, LITERALLY!!
-
For as limited as Tai has been on the offensive end, he is a monster on the defensive end.
-
The key to this team will be 3 point shooting (45 %), defense (MVSU shot 26 %), and rebounding (gave up 15 offensive rebounds) A nice win last night. We did what we should have. Got out to a big lead and ran away from an overmatched team. Didn't tax our starters (No starter played over 20 minutes). Got plenty of minutes for our bench. If Hammond can give us a quality 15 minutes a game, and average 4 and 3, I will be happy. However, the talent level will go way up.
