Nebraska (10-11) vs. Maryland (13-7) Game Thread

Yeah that was a pretty deep cut he went for I even said it was a small sample size! Sam Hoiberg is no flash in the pan but Keisei has been out of his mind. I celebrate my wrong hot take with all of you! -

Not well! It has definitely shaken out the other way! Hats off to the kid! -
One good thing about the era of transfers is there shouldn't be as much urgency to extend coach contracts in this type of scenario. Our best players have been transfers for, what, a decade now? The sell of "I'm going to be here for your entire collegiate career" doesn't carry nearly the weight it used to. It really didn't carry much weight at ISU (Transfer U) either. I have a hunch we'll get a couple killers next season to play alongside Gary and end up with a decent team. I do think next season you have to set a .500 mark for Fred if you're Trev. This year should be a pass because the coaching has been phenomenal, but the depth hasn't been ready for B1G attrition. That's also a component of coaching.

Yep. I'm just not sure which assistants recruited them. I know Griesel for sure was recruited by a coach who is no longer here. I'm not sure who got a foot in the door on the others, but I have my guesses. That said, I'm floored by the actual coaching of the assistants so it's worth a shot to see what their roster looks like next season. We certainly have some nice role players.

I’m not really. My original statement was I’d take SH over both right now. -
I’m with you here. I’m barely on the side of having him back based on the philosophy he’s rolled out this year, but he’ll have to bring in a couple of killers in the portal who can really score it to go with the decent role players he’ll have back. We don’t really know if this staff can recruit. They can certainly coach.

But it’s not my opinion. In roughly 25min: SH: 15pts (6/8), 3rb, 1TO, better defense KT: 3pts (1/3), 2rb, 2TO, worse defense Like I said, small sample size, but Sam deserves at least to split minutes with KT at this point. KT is a random X factor and not at all dependable. This is the first time they’ve split minutes so there is no other statistic to draw from. I also disagree entirely that Sam isn’t much better defensively than Keisei. Sam is extremely active and physical with better anticipation and lateral quickness. The kid is in the weight room. Sorry. -

He’s done what he is supposed to do offensively this and I love the kid’s enthusiasm, but he is a horrendous defender. I think Sam is just about as good of a shooter and about twice as good of a defender from the small sample size. Kid is a gamer. -

Sam is a D1 player for sure. IQ is crazy high, phenomenal mechanics, good enough athleticism defensively and crazy good effort. I’d take him right now over Keisei and Wilcher simply because he’s not a liability defensively. He’s also in great shape and strong. Glad we’re learning this now while he’s young. -
Gotta haves, portal or otherwise

As an athlete, he actually reminds me quite a bit of Dawson but with better handles. I would joyously welcome another Dawson esque defender. I friggin love that kid. I think Lloyd will have similar perimeter defensive abilities. -
Zero intel here, but the kid has basically the same build as Sam. I’d love to see if we could get away with him at PG. Having Sam bully other teams PGs while allowing us to stay long/physical on defense/glass has been a huge advantage. There have really only been a couple of games where Sam was exposed a bit. St. John’s comes to mind. But Sam has mostly been a fantastic mismatch. I can’t imagine Lloyd’s handles would be much different, and the offense is mostly safe handoffs from the PG to initiate the offense.

This is as well coached of a Nebraska team as any I can remember. I don’t really care what year it is. I just wanted to see great coaching from a guy who has massively underperformed, and I see it every game now. There’s effort on both ends, unselfishness, and consistency in execution (outside of shooting). Losing our two best defenders will likely screw the W/L Fred and staff deserve for the job they’ve done this year. I also like the youngsters— Lloyd (Fr.) Dawson (Fr.) Lawrence (Fr.) Oleg (Fr.) Mcpherson (Fr.) Keita (So.) WB (So.) Wilcher (So.) and returning: Gary and Keisei (Jr.) I don’t think there’s any reason we can’t see another transfer influx of talent at PG/SG. This is the first season Fred has had a reliable PG. Maybe Lloyd has been shadowing Sam. I’d bring Fred back to see if he can properly recruit to this new system and identity. The philosophy seems to be sound for once. Maybe we can NIL our way to some decent talent.

The KSU matchup is a sneaky HUGE game for us this season.

Keeping up with the offers/visits

Baye Ndongo is a great looking player. He'd be licking his chops seeing what we're doing with Walker. His high school team runs that exact set for him. -
I'm liking the basketball I'm seeing on both ends of the court. The effort is there. That's a result of good coaching and a roster with high character, smart players. Will that be enough? I don't know, but I'm optimistic Fred has found a formula for success, and I'm not sure Trev will want to risk stopping that momentum.

Love that you can see Strick in the background. I bet he's in heaven watching this kind of defense.
