I do think that is the way schools without the blue chip name can compete...but getting the kids to buy in and do that is another thing. I look at guys that emerge as juniors and have great Senior years.....with a redshirt, if they emerge as Sophomores, I think the last two years could be amazing. But if guys won't do it....hard to implement that plan.

I worked with a coach this year (at the high school level) and he said when players realize their role and understand their abilities vs others....it becomes of huge burden off their chest and gives them Freedom to play hard and do things on the court that maximize their potential.... But like many things, this epiphany happens at different times in people's lives...some realize this in high school, others realize this in college and some don't realize it until they are done playing.

True...but my contention with assistants is that they are often moving jobs based on their situations much less than the head coach's situations... and this is an example of how assistants move for one reason or another....
-
I thought we had no chance at a quality assistant with a head coach with only 3 years left on his contract....He must not be very good or at least that is what I should gather from the last two months of reading this message board.

Personally, I would like to go to a more Villanova style offense...that incorporates Universal Offensive concepts..rather than plays or a set motion.

I heard he was Armen Gilliam's son.

Odds are he will be a transfer candidate in two years, we can revisit him them..

Sweet, I like the highlight video and hope he is as aggressive to the rim as the video leads you to believe.

Ominous Tweet Re: Roster Attrition
Blindcheck replied to Cookie Miller Wasn't Dirty's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
In regards to the NBA draft....it is probably better for your chances to make it to the league if you go undrafted than if you are drafted in the second round. Being undrafted, you can work with your agent to find the right opportunity...get on the right summer league team, find that NBA camp that actually has roster spots. An example...I'm a Bucks fan and if you were to get drafted by the Bucks....they have 15 rosters spots that are pretty much tied up..They will have to release or trade someone for you to make the roster and they will already have to do that to keep the First round draft pick, so as a second round pick, you have to really prove yourself. Although, saying all this, I do think it is changing with the G league having almost every team with their own affiliate...2nd rounders and udndafted free agents will have the opportunity to play, learn the system and prove themselves against G League level competition. Overall 2nd round pick is not really a great place to be...Undrafted guys can end up making more faster because I think they are not tied into the rookie scale that guys that are drafted are subject to. -
When you go 0 for the conference season, that might not be a bad thing to lose that many guys.

I think Pitt had 8 guys transfer out...which means opportunity...

Is Bill Moos going to give me a year off my donations?
Blindcheck replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
That is why I don't think he leaves Nebraska next year unless he is officially shown the door from Moos. My opinon, is he knows his status is precarious (which is why he took only a 1 year extension rather than 3 years with probably the same buyout).... If Miles can win next year, he probably will get the 5 years total contract without having to forgo any of the buyout. -
Coaching wise.... I thought Sadler's teams seemed to get a large amount of wide open shots...but often those wide open shots didn't turn into makes. When Miles took Petteway and team to the NCAA tourney, I thought we made an incredible amount of shots that were head scratchers, but the shots went in...I remember the next year when the wins didn't come and a friend was complaining about how we were so much worse than the previous year....I remember telling him that I thought we were the same team, but the crazy shots that we seemed to live on the previous year weren't going in this year. I want to see a coach that runs an offense that creates open shots and layups while creating defense that tries to eliminate those things.

I think Agents have used this line of thinking to get contracts as far out as they can....

Is Bill Moos going to give me a year off my donations?
Blindcheck replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
In my opinion, this is his last Power 5 job, barring a good two or three year run here at Nebraska. -
If the option is a team in the 300 or scheduling a Division II team that doesn't count against RPI....Schedule the Division II team. I hate that something like that matters, but it seems as if it does. I would not mind playing UNO in Omaha....Road game that is not really a road game, IMO.

One could argue that hamstringing a program with a 5 to 7 year contracts makes it harder to compete in the long run. Everyone assumes the money in college athletics is going to continue to grow...but as an example the Big ten network just lost a large chunk of homes when a cable system dropped them and as more people choose to buy ala carte services, the money dynamics could change and change swiftly....so having an AD that makes sure he is looking out for the long term interests of the University should be applauded... The 7 year contract could then become the 18 foot hoop....AD's need to balance everything and in my opinion Moos did so.
-
I'm saying...he has three years, if that is not enough....tough...I say figure it out. I understand where you are coming from....but Miles hasn't earned that level of gurantee, he has earned 3 years on his contract....that is what it is. Now, he has to overcome and find kids others have missed or sell the school and program to those that might worry about the length of his contract. As stated above, you can recruit without a long term contract, you just have to overcome objections.
-
Have they? He is 97-97 All three guys had nice wins and bad losses.... I would probably give the Nod to Sadler, becuase he took over when facilities were at their worst in comparison to others and is results are pretty much on par or even better than Miles, where it has never been better.
-
Probably true....but recruit harder... In sales, and that is what this is, you have to overcome objections.....Explain to the kid that contract length is meaningless, and sell yourself and program on other attributes. My guess if contract length is listed as a reason why he didn't come here, we never had a chance with him anyway.
-
My take on this thread is to really talk about the insanity of the contract extensions in general...Not Just the one given to Tim Miles, when he already has 2 years left. The Athletic Departments have allowed coaches and Agents to gain the upper hand in contract negotiations...because recruiting might be tougher, I need security in hiring assistants, ETC. Now, we had to give Miles an extension otherwise he would have been a lame duck with 2 years left. To me that is insanity that the Athletic Departments don't realize that they should have more power in these negotiations...in Miles case, Moos should have said, you want 5 years...great, but the buyout will decrease by 66% Over those three years, because I am only comfortable with a 1 year extension. My guess is a conversation may have taken place similar to that and Miles believes next year will be good and he is willing to parlay next year into a longer extension without a reduced buyout.
-
my guess is that his 22 wins earned one more year... NCAA tournament might have earned two more years (thus allowing a bad year) My guess is Moos isn't ready to committ to more than that..
-
If Miles would not be safe if he put up 10-19 or even 20-10, you have no business extending his contract...it would not be in the interest of the university to do so.
-
I don't doubt that happens...but as an AD, do you think it is worth tying up an extra Million or 2 dollars just so some 18 year old kid won't be told that Coach Miles is only under contract through 2021? I don't think it is...and I would expect my coaches to be able to overcome those type of objections.
-
Contract Extensions Why do you extend a contract of coach of your program. My opinions follow. I think that Athletic Directors have allowed Agents to push them around and too many programs extend coaches because they feel they have to give the perception that their coach is in for the long haul. I think that is the big lie that coaches and Agents have told their fans, recruits and Universities and just about everyone has bought it. I believe you should only extend a coach when you want to keep a coach that is being pursued by other institutions. I would give an example of Matt Campbell at Iowa State...Iowa state extended him contract but also raised the buyout to protect the University financially if Campbell is hired away from Iowa State. Giving a coach an extension and not receiving any more consideration (raising the coaches buyout or slashing the University's buyout) is not the prudent thing to do. If it is true that recruiting is tougher when you have a shorter contract (i don't believe it is as big a deal as others do since most top players don't expect to spend 4 years in school anyway), I believe the ADs should tell coaches to suck it up and try harder...some places are harder to recruit because they are in Manhattan, Kansas...every school and coaches have pluses and Minuses. I believe that Universities and Athletic departments have tremendous leverage in contract negotiations with coaches, but have been Bullied by agents over the last 20 years and have ceded much of the power in contract negotiations to the coaches side of the ledger.....there are only 80 great jobs in college basketball and coaches often only get 1 shot at those jobs, yet they seem to continue to get contract extensions when no other University is going to hire them away. The biggest example I see is the university of Iowa...They have tied up 10 years of University dollars in football and 6 years in basketball for 2 coaches that I doubt have other options anywhere near what the University is paying them....Does it help them in Recruiting, I don't think so.... One last thing...in basketball, if you fire your coach, most likely the new coach will blow up the roster anyway, so the I don't buy the defense that not extending the contract will affect the next coach.
