  1. This is why an extension is meaningless and all the "goodwill"....unless the answer to that question is NO....Miles would be safe even with a 10-19 season, everything else doesn't matter.
  2. If a recruit or potential assistant coach does't realize that Miles needs to win next year...then they probably aren't the type to be concerned about contract extensions and if they said extensions mean anything.
  3. Here is where I disagree with your premise... If as we all know that Miles has another do or die year in 2018-2019...an extension does nothing for him in recruiting or building the program....An extension that is given just to help with perception (and that is what it would be) is meaningless.... What can happen next year, if Miles and the Huskers make it to the sweet 16...is long term extension can be given and people might actually believe that Miles has gotten off the hot seat. But until your coach actually gets off the hot seat, a contract extension to 4 or 5 years will not change the dynamics in recruiting and assistant coach hiring. The key to this whole thing, for the program to have stability is the program has to show consistency first, then people will believe the stability. I think Moos did the absolute right thing...he committed publicly to the coach for next year and is giving Miles a chance to continue to coach at Nebraska if he performs.... Miles still has one of the top 80 jobs in college basketball (being in a power conference)....This is probably is only chance to ever have one of those jobs(which to me is another reason to not commit $ for too many years, if nobody is going to poach your coach, you don't need commit public university dollars to him)....so Moos gave him another year to figure it out....Overcome any recruiting obstacles and coach up the guys you got.
  4. Here's your brand: one of the best seasons in school history resulted in a first round loss in the NIT.
  5. I live in Iowa currently...They extended Fran McCaffrey through like 2024 give or take a year....and Apathy is starting to simmer with the fanbase. An Extension to a coach that has mediocre results does not sit well with the average fan who looks at a an extension until 2024 and thinks, we are stuck with Fran for the next 6 years even if they continue to suck...believe me they sure were pissing an moaning about Ferrentz's extensions too. Is recruiting a little harder, maybe...but I think it is way over stated how contract length affects a recruits attitude about a school...Now a coach on the hot seat that will affect a recruit...but as many have stated on this board, the extension to 5 years doesn't mean anything because Miles would be fired after next year if the season is not up to expectations....so players and potential recruits see that as well. I think an announcement my Moos that Miles was extended to 2024 would not have sat well with the average fan...who looks at his record and says 97-97...gets you 6 more years...I guess we are happy to just field a team.
  6. I do think the 1 year extension was the right course...a longer extension might have sent the fans to the door.
  7. I assume by netting out the contract, you mean lowering the university buyout so the cost for firing him next year is the same whether he gets 1 or 2 more years....Miles would have to agree to that too...and he might have said, No, I would rather have just 1 year and we can talk next year. Miles might be in line to get a better extension and money next year if he wins...but if he changes the structure of the buyout, that would have to be negotiated again next year...so Miles very well could have said no dice....He did agree to the 1 year extension, so that is what he thought was the best offer on the table (although, it may have been the only offer).
  8. I don't think the AD in terms of giving an extension, not giving an extension, etc....does anything positive for the Nebraska basketball brand...although giving a long term extension 2 years or more might have done more damage to the long term PR than good....it would show that not making the NCAA tourney and losing an NIT first round game is good enough and we will reward that with monetary promised into the future. I see Fran McCaffrey has a contract that is about 3 years longer at Iowa than Miles has at Nebraska...does that do anything for their brand...I actually think it does the opposite...living in Des Moines, when the extension was signed, the casual fan questioned what the AD was thinking...why reward a guy who hasn't done much, etc.....a long term extension can often cause fans to have a little apathy...and try recruiting to fan base that is apathetic....doesn't matter how long your deal is.
  9. Ideally, you want your Brand to be bigger than your CEO or Coach... A great Brand like Coke....I doubt anyone knows who the CEO is. Now in Sports, Coaches are often the face of a program for better or worse...but as an athletic department, you want to build your brand so that it is bigger than the coach. I would think there are schools that have this (Indiana basketball, Notre Dame football, Nebraska football's brand has probably survived the last 4 coaches)
  10. Then, Moos shouldn't have extended him at all....if he is going to hire someone else, let him coach on a 2 year deal....
  11. Also, assistant coaches don't stay too long anywhere...why the more coaches and places you work, the more opportunities is gets you later by your network.
  12. I would say that those that think that Moos is getting rid of Miles next year is a foregone conclusion are wrong. Will he Fire him if he is unsuccessful next year, yes? But, a one year extension allows Miles to have another year to show that he can compete in the Big ten... If Moos really wanted to fire him after next year, no contract extension would have been appropriate.
  13. Giving a 2, 3 or even 5 year extension fools no one....so why tie up university money, if the entire world knows that next year is do or die. Will this be tough on Miles, yes...but in my opinion, a five year extension wouldn't give him anymore security other than monetarily for himself.
  14. If Moos extended his contract to 5 years....and Miles went 14-18 next year...Guess what Miles is getting fired anyway. Recruits will leave, players will leave....but in the end a new coach would probably want that to happen anyway. I think everyone knows that Miles needs to win next year or he is gone.....giving him an extension to 5 years would not change the "negative" recruiting that goes on about his status. Especially since the University of Nebraska is notorious for Firing Coaches within Months of giving them extensions.
  15. To me this is sound reasoning.... Coaches with three contracts might have to work a little harder, build deeper relationships with recruits, but he still has three years of $105,000 a month guaranteed income....That is a pretty secure future.
  16. If Miles thinks he is leaving after next year, because has a great year...than he should have refused the extension....because the only reason you sign it, is because you want the cash if your fired. Signing the extension even if only 1 more year, makes you a little less marketable if another school comes looking because they have to buyout 2 years instead of 1.
  17. Because he is under contract for three years.
  18. Totally agree with what you are saying. That is why as a head coach, you have to have the ability to become that father figure, to assume the role the recruit desires if an assistant leaves. In sales, when you see a new sales guy come in, the good ones have the ability to build on the goodwill that the previous salesman built. The ones that can't do that, struggle to build those relationships.... As head coach, you need to have that ability....or every time you lose an assistant, you lose all the players that consider that assistant the reason for being at your school.
  19. Giannis does not get the calls that other superstars seem to get. ON the final foul, had he had a Celtics across his chest and Not Bucks, that is a jump ball 100% of the time. The NBA protects its Brand teams and potential ratings....Teams like indiana and Milwaukee have to win convincingly or they really get screwed in close games by calls seemingly always going to the Brand teams (Celtics, Lakers, or teams with the top stars like Golden St and Cleveland). I am hoping the Giannis can become the star that Curry has become so Milwaukee can get the calls that Golden St or Cleveland gets...as they never got them before they got their stars.
  20. Recruiting...Coaches want to sell themselves as they build their brand. Universities need o demand that coaches sell the University not so much the coaches...if you allow the coaches to sell recruits on the coaches and not the school, these things happen. If you own a company and allow your salespeople to be the brand, if they leave and go to a competitor, expect to lose a large chunk of sales....if they sold the company and the product, you build a bigger moat.
  21. If you are a head coach and let your assistants have the relationships, you are in trouble when they leave. You need to have the ability to "take over" the relationship when a kid is ready to commit.
  22. The tough decision is too not extend him....and if Moos chose to do that, I applaud him. If it makes the job tougher for Miles, oh well, suck it up and get it done anyway.
  23. I'm a Bucks fan...If Milwaukee can get Malcom Brogdon back in the mix and get chemistry to gel, I think they have a chance in the east. Milwaukee's coaching is suspect...but probably have as much talent as any team in the East. They lack a Center which causes issues at times. Giannis (Face of Franchise, if he could shoot 38% from 3, he would be impossible to guard) Jabari Parker (not starting in regular season as they have massaged his minutes coming back from ACL injury) Eric Bledsoe (ok, but I prefer Brogdon on the floor) Khris Middleton. (scorer, very important to team) John Henson (can disappear at times) Bench (in order of Importance IMO) Brogdon (might be one of my favorites on roster and just coming back from injury) Tony Snell (don't like his game, but can shoot) Tyler Zeller (capable center, probably should get more minutes than Henson) Shabazz Muhammed (has been a good pickup for offense off the bench) Brandon jennings (playing well after arriving late in year from overseas and G League) Matthew Delladova (scrappy, just coming back from injury) Jason Terry (yes, he is still in the league) Thon Maker (athlete, but still has long ways to go...plays probably a bit too much) Marshall Plumlee (not playing much but looks as good as Henson at times, again that just tells you the center issues) Sterling Brown (fits in with team and plays some solid minutes) Dj wilson (getting nothing from him) Xavier Munford (nothing from him)
  24. I would love to see all schools get hammered if they participated illegal activities....even if Nebraska ended up being one of them. Hammer these schools (10 year postseason ban)...something that really has teeth...and forfeiture of all games that benefited from the illegal activity...not vacating the wins, but forfeiting the wins to the schools that didn't cheat. Also, permanent coaching bans in the NCAA on all coaches that participated. Now will this happen, No...but it should...if they wanted to really clean up the dirty money.
  25. I would not be saddened to see Kansas get hammered as well as any school that participated in these types of shenanigans.
