I wish I was this guy's future agent - because he's gonna be big time. Therefore I'm planting my flag on this take that we will be hearing this guy's name frequently in the next ten years. Craig Doty - currently at Graceland University of the NAIA. All the dude does is win, and win quickly. Took Rock Valley College (NJCAA) from last in their conference to 4 straight national tournaments, 3 title games, and won 2 national championships. Won 20 games and was nationally ranked in his first year at Graceland. And just won the National Championship in NAIA D1 last night on a buzzer beater. FWIW, NAIA D1 is some serious ball. https://www.si.com/college-basketball/2018/03/20/graceland-naia-national-basketball-title-ot-buzzer-beater-video He's also created a monster of a camp program with his Midwest Elite Basketball camps.

I hate when I write things, and immediately know what I'm gonna get made fun of for, and still post it.

1620 basically discussed the meeting with Moos for 47 minutes today. And there's constant talk about his contract being extended. All of those things are code for whether we're going to keep him around or not.
-
And the thing is - it's not like we haven't tried something different. Collier and Doc couldn't be any more opposite. Miles is like neither of them. One common theme we've went after coaches who have had success at slightly lower levels. Doc with probably the least (right?).
-
I went Miles, Sadler, Collier - but damn if I know... And talk about regression to the mean as a program. Sheesh

What to do with Miles contract?

My opinion is based soley, 100% on who sticks around for next year. If we have another mass exodus of contributors I’m probably done. But if it just looks like seniors are gone and maybe one dude like Copeland (who’s an old man by cbb standards and I have to imagine has his degree close to being done), I’m all on board. But if Copeland, Palmer, and (god forbid) Roby leave - peace out. Freshman are tough. If Nana or Allen leave I’m gonna be super disappointed, but understanding and still on board. If Thorir leaves, or maybe someone like McVeigh... I’ll probablt forget by the next hour. Nothing against those guys... I just don’t see them as contributors. -
I don’t understand the wider lane unless you are going to adopt defensive 3 seconds also. Because without that you’re just making it tougher for offensive bigs.

Should college players get paid and if so how much?
basketballjones replied to NUdiehard's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I'm with the student of nu. But I also think that they should get rid of one and done, and any student-athlete should be able to test the waters with the draft and decide if they want to go back or not. I could also be convinced that the players should be allowed to profit off their "likeness" - but I would need to hear a great plan. -
@DirkChatelain This piece might be my favorite thing that I have ever read of yours. I think that it could and should be a book. You'd get one sale, for sure. With the multimedia features - would there be a way to place a QR Codes throughout the book that a reader could use their phone while reading the book to access the multimedia features?

Just messing with ya for slapping my optimism with your potential scenario for disaster. Nothing personal, I apologize if it came across that way.

Man I bet you're fun at parties.

Uh... They were just discussing this on 1620 the other day. They came to a similar conclusion I have - but there's enough talk out there about it that they brought it up from hearing from fans. And I've seen speculation many other places and by many more than you suggest.

Man... I'll tell ya what - I tend to be a contrarian at times. Even though I've been a vocal critic (but huge supporter at the same time), it just seems as the tides turn I go the other way. Been seeing a lot about firing Coach Miles, or asking about his job security (on this board and others). Quick question - are y'all nuts? I don't care about how tough or not tough our schedule was this year - Coach Miles just produced one of the best records we've ever had. We have one of the most talented, enjoyable teams I've ever seen in program history. Our players stay out of trouble and out of the newspaper for bad reasons. If this core comes back - watch out. Could easily be the best NU team to ever walk around campus. Our recruiting is fantastic. Our social media presence and fan engagement are top notch. The arena is packed. X's and O's wise - I've seen some adjustments made in the past two years that have made me very happy. The things we are doing take time to develop and build a rhythm. Again - if we can keep this core together, next year could be special. Are there some negatives? Sure. Constant roster fluctuation. Assistant Coaching carousel. Still haven't gotten over the NCAA tourney hump, or made it deep into a conference tournament. But this is Nebraska Basketball... we don't have the program weight to just roll us down some consistent, carved out path that guarantees top 50 recruits, 20 win seasons, and permanent top 4 conferences finishes. We're going to have some down year, some roster change, some assistant coaching changes - that's just the way it is when you're not UNC/Duke/Kentucky/MichState/etc... I am seeing growth. I am starting to see development and consistency. I love our recruiting and transfer approach. I think Coach Miles is still growing and becoming better by the year. I'm all in on the Coach Miles bus. Disclaimer: All of this changes if we have massive roster turnover, especially from unexpected or unreasonable areas, and go 12-something next year. Dirk usually hits these out of the park... excited to read about this. I was young during this era but I certainly remember some great stuff about it.

I guess so, because I'm not seeing what you're seeing. I feel like you've picked a few times where you saw him not board and wrote the story. I see him, more often then not, working his ass off to get position, trace the ball, then high point and immediately secure more boards better than anyone I've seen do around here in a while. He's also already got more rebounds this year than anyone last year. He's easily on pace to have more rebounds than anyone in 15-16. More rebounds than anyone from 14-15. More rebounds than anyone on our NCAA tourney team of 13-14. Might not eclipse Ubel's average in 12-13, but he'll have more total I'd imagine. And then of course, more rebounds than anyone in Doc's last few years. Had to go back to Maric's senior year of 07-08 to find someone getting more (at his astronomical 10.2 a game).
-
Copeland is leading us in rebound, 2nd by a mile in blocks, the most steals out of any 4 or 5, and has the least amount of fouls per our full time starters. We've gone from 77 in KenPom's defensive metrics to number 34 in one year. Palmer, Copeland, and Roby playing major minutes is why (Along with some fantastic adjustments by Miles and Co).
-
Copeland rarely boxes out? Your'e nuts.
-
Uh..... Man, we must not be watching the same stuff. Cope and Palmer make us ferocious on defense. We're playing similar principles to what we always have played under Miles - but Copeland, Roby, and Palmer's athleticism and length make the defense work.
-
I feel like some really good things happened to Nebraska Basketball if that happened.
-
Play him with Roby when Copeland gets fouls or needs a break. But - I appreciate your input - I figured others saw something different with his abilities than I did. But, I don't have any stats to back this up, but I believe Jordy fouls at the same rate Duby does most of the time, and if you want to talk about lateral movement defensively.......... Great point about late game with fouls. But I feel there's a lot of times earlier that we could go to him.
-
First Question: I know you all are going to think I'm crazy for asking why we aren't doing a particular thing defensively, with as amazing of defense as we play, but I have one tweak I wish we would see from Coach Miles - MORE SWITCHING. I feel as if Palmer, Roby, Copeland, and Taylor should be switching almost everything. Worst case scenario is Taylor - who's incredibly long, savvy, and athletic - ends up on a true big and gets beat up a couple times. Palmer, Roby, and Copeland can all guard relatively similar guy with varying degrees of success. In turn, Taylor, Gill, Palmer, and Watson should be switching any and all guard/guard action. One year I was an assistant with a team that got really good at looking at the shot clock and going automatic 4-way or 5-way switches when they saw 8 seconds left on the shot clock. I thought it was very deadly and created big time issues for teams who tried to run a quick action at the end of the shot clock, and didn't give other teams enough time to take advantage of mismatches created by the switch. Last night, Indiana ran Flex out of a BOB that they scored on. Had we auto-pre-switched the BOBs before the entry, you'd keep all your bigs down low and your guards up top. And no one has to fight through tough back-screen/down-screen action. Mollinari/Miles know best - so I am not questioning - just suggesting. Thoughts? Second Question: What is up with Duby? I guess I don't understand the rotation here. Is he hurt? Do they kind of have a minutes restriction on him because of injuries/illness/bad knees or something? Have I missed a report about this (if so please link)? Jordy did some good things last night. 9 rebounds. He really hustled (huge play to dive and kind of throw off the guy who landed out of bounds), tried hard, and did his best. Even hit a big hook shot when desperately needed it. But overall, I felt like he was a liability. I'm critical of Jordy, I know. I really don't feel like it's overly critical, but some of you may think I am. But I really do not see why Duby does not play more. I feel like defensively, he gives us some of the great things Roby can, and offensively he knows his role and gets the heck out of the way. Only trying to get tip dunks and offensive rebounds. What's up?
