Did you read his column today?
-
You make me laugh suggesting he is a "very talented writer."You must be one of those Husker fans that believes if a writer says anything negative towards the Huskers they're a terrible writer. Nope, you should know me better than that. Are you one of those guys that thinks a guy is a very talented writer just because they write for a large paper? Oh course not. Sam McKewon is one of the best writers in this state and he spent many years at the state paper

Sounded like a legitimate question for what this program has been through. Don't understand what all the fuss is about. But also a great answer from Miles

Wow, you guys make me laugh. The hate for Dirk is so funny. He's a very talented writer and wants nothing for the Nebraska basketball to succeed and all you can think about is a conformation with Bo At a press conference that was totally over blown. And now that he asked a question about baggage for a column about breaking through and people freak out. Let's not forget that baggage that we've all been though. We're all (mostly) guys, let's not hold into petty grudges

I have no idea why people are getting so upset about the idea of starting a senior on senior night. Yes Wisconsin is a huge game. But is it really going to hurt things to start Peltz and Rey? Come on. Peltz isn't a good player, but he's not going to hurt the team. Geez. I think it's rewarding for those guys to have their names annouced during the starting lineup and all. You put them out there and then as soon as the ball is thrown up you take your normal starters to the scores table. You probably have them in there for a minute at the most. Not a big deal at all.

Circling back around, there are 330 or so Div 1 schools. Why didn't Beranek receive an offer from any other school? Why didn't he receive an offer from UNO? That's a great point, how come UNO didn't go after him at least?

You're onto something with your, "Nee found a solid contributor..."I've been arguing for years that there has to be kids we're flatout missing in this state who could be incredible contributors after a couple years. We're just unwilling to make an investment on a kid who just is who he is and you know exactly what they'll be in a few years. Everyone is so worried about potential and athleticism. Finding possible NBA products who can dunk, block shots, and have a 80" wingspan. Not all 5 guys have to have those qualities, and certainly not all 13 scholarships need to be filled with that. Sometimes you can just find a "basketball player," who has skills, can shoot, knows the game really well, and plays hard. Regardless of size and athleticism. For the poster who said why aren't D2 and NAIA teams completely dominating then? Well it takes a whole team to win, not just one player. No one is saying there are 20 kids out there a year from Nebraska who are flying under the radar. But there certainly has to be a couple we miss out on. Nick Reed at Doane just scored over 2,000 points in his career - what if we had brought him in knowing he can shoot, and has a great build (6'4", 215lbs)? May never get 20ppg here, but by his junior or senior year could be a great role player or contributor. Who knows? Connor Beranek has a couple 40 point games this year at UNK, and has them playing their best ball in quite a while. And hell, he's 6'7" -- same with Ethan Brozek who is doing great things for them this year. We'll never find Pettaway's consistently in the state of Nebraska. And Stricklands are a once-in-a-generation players. But I fully believe there are role players and contributors out there who we are missing out on because we'd rather take a kid from out of state who is "athletic." Doc Sadlers classes were full of that crap, when we could have had much more solid, reliable players. I got blasted on here not too far back by suggesting Miles try a sway a fringe prospect to walk on with the idea that they could possibly develop into a contributer off the bench. I do know he invited Beranek to come try out for a walk on spot but Beranek wanted to go to Doane instead.

Referring to the orginal topic..... There is talent in the state, but with Nebraska having a small population base that limits the numbers. Seems like we've have some good talent come out lately producing at least one D1 player each year (CSU guys, Eliason, Akoy, Gessell). But like previously stated, the state also produces kids who just don't meet the entrance requirements. For this year you have Thurman from Central and Dumes from South who are D1 players. But both are going to go to the JUCO route because they have to. Last year Central team had six guys who were D1 players. But two are at Central Community College in Columbus. one at a JUCO in Texas, Akoy at Louisville, Billingsly at UNO, and Thurman is likely a JUCO too. Everybody wants to praise Coach Behrens, but he doesn't have a good track record of getting his guys eligible for D1 schools. Not all of that is his fault, but I believe he could do more. You can't also forget that some of these kids chose football instead. Zach Potter and Courtney Grixby for example could have played D1 basketball but chose football instead. I'd have to believe if Nebrasketball continues this upward trend, we may not see some of those kids chose football over basketball.

OPS standards are you have to pass four classes to compete. Whether that is a D or higher. That is actually the NSAA minnimum standard and OPS just follows that. Yes they are going to a 2.0 and that is going to have a huge affect.
-
Don't forget you have to have somebody be the shot clock operator. Some might volunteer to do so, but most of the time you have to pay that person too. So that's an added cost.

Robin on 1620 just said Ray is the guy the HAVE
TheGov21 replied to lanigan123's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
As simple as it sounds, it's true. Rey just needs to make shots. Once he gets a couple to fall he'll get his confidence back. I'd also like to see Miles get him a few manufactured looks. I would also bet Rey is putting in the extra time to get things fixed. -
that the problem with Akoy going to Louisville. They are never going to stop recruiting elite level players at his position. With him being raw, his decision to go there had the high risk of him getting lost in the shuffle.
-
Improving his footwork can help him be more quicker. Let's also not forget about confidence. I'm assuming with a year under his belt he'll be much better.

Preseason Football rankings Question
TheGov21 replied to huskerpower1988's topic in Other Huskers Sports
I'm assuming this will eventually get moved to the Fall Sports section..... The quick answer is no, they won't be favored over Nebraska. Wisconsin will be the favorite to win the new Big Ten West Division and Nebraska likely second followed by Iowa and then Minnesota. Nebraska should have a good shot at winning the division, but Wisconsin will be tough. -
I think it's sad that a host of a show that has largely been considered the best sports talk show in the state is going to message boards to rile up fans to help his show. Pretty sad Between 1480 and 93.7, Lincoln has the afternoons locked up at the moment. I'm not even sure why I have 590 as a pre-set anymore. Oh I agree 100%. I bet 590 wished they still had Michael Grey. I heard he was good, but never tuned in. I've tried listening to their new show but Handley is terrible. The only thing Unsporsmanlike Coduct has going for them is guests who have comitted before Severe left.
-
Yes you are better off. He is unbearable. Like Norm said, he tries too hard to be funny and it comes across awful. He does the same thing when doing play by play for the Jays. All I know is 1620 better hire a good cohost to pair with him because Severe's new show and Bishop's suckiness (sp) could cause what use to be the best sports talk radio show in the state to plument. But maybe that's a good thing.
-
I remember sitting at the top of the Bob the fist year Nebraska was in the Big 10 and Penn State came to town. I could hear Chambers clear as day all the way up there. The guy is a screamer. I do find it commical that there are several college basketball coaches (even college football coaches too) that are worse than Pelini, but it is never brought up in broadcasts or other media stories like it is for Bo.
-
Agree 100%. It's scary that Bishop is the lead guy now. Curious to see who they hire to be his full time cohost. I got so sick of the show that I started listening to Unnecessary Roughness on 1480 to fill the time till Mike'l Severe's show starts up. But I really like the show so I may stay. They talk a bunch of Husker basketball on 1480 and even have a pregame show for each game.
-
Don't quite understand what you mean by situation like Biggs. The reason he isn't getting any offers isn't because of talent. It's because his grades aren't good and most schools need to see if he'll qualify.
-
He's got to qualify first
-
I'm not sure if people aren't aware of the show or they just can't find the podcasts anywhere. But Unnecessary Roughness with Nick Gregath on 1480 talks a lot of Nebrasketball and even does a pregame show for almost every game.
