Boston College (5-2) vs. Nebraska (4-3) Game Thread

Dawson is a great energy guy but his offensive skill set isn’t very high currently. SG is getting blown by defensively, which could be an issue in league games -

There are times, albeit not many, that Tominaga is our best offensive weapon out there. -
Besides early first half turnovers, this was our best all around game of the year, by far. Balanced scoring and efficient on offense. Lots of points in the paint. SG hit some timely threes. Gary played aggressive and attacked the rim with a lot of effort. His dunks are powerful. Someone asked in a previous thread whose minutes Walker takes…tonight it was Keita. Walker is just so much more established and developed as a basketball player. This is something to build on. We can beat BC. They apparently lost to Maine and we beat Maine. I know that’s not how it works, but still… Oh, I need to point this out. All summer when people were saying Kesei was so limited and one dimensional and just a spot up shooter. Well…his ability to drive and make heady plays, 13 points with only one three and no free throws, his scoring 10+ points off the bench, that’s been a nice development.

Bandoumel is playing a bit off today. Turnover prone and not passing. Tominaga has provided us with a spark of energy. Has like 3 rebounds and forced a couple of turnovers and a steal. His shot selection isn’t always great, but neither is the rest of the team. Wilhelm got posterized. Walker looks like he wants to win. Wish Wilcher would hit just 1/3 of his open threes… -

He is fine in the matchup zone. He gets exposed man to man though. But we have to play him, who else is going to come off the bench and get us double digits? -

Fellas, who do you have winning in a foot race? 1) CJ Wilcher 2) Bryce Benhart 3) Trent Hixson -
Down 36-44, other FH teams would’ve folded. This one didn’t, so credit must be given and props to them for finishing in a major, major run. I think Bandoumel is our only guy who may actually be able to drive hard, pull up and hit a mid range jumper, the rest of our guys don’t create for themselves. SG played well and had a nice bounce back effort. Tominaga looks like a jitterbug at times out there. He tried hard on defense, but his real contribution is bringing much needed energy off the bench. Hope Keita can build off that. It was nice.

My observations: A game like this against an established power conference team is real sobering, eh fellas? For all the “Olegs can help us this year” and “Wilcher lost 16 pounds and transformed his body” narrative, this was some I’ve cold water on the face. Wilhelm is really good at…..fouling. His revised role should be to play defense, rebound, and foul as needed. At this level he isn’t a drive to the hoop from outside the three point line, and I think I’ve only seen him make a couple of 3’s, and that was last season. CJ Wilcher. Wow. Last night exposed him quite badly. He’s a classic tweener. Too small to play the three. Too slow to play the 2. (He’s actually too slow to play the three as well) He may get hot at times from the outside, but his foot speed is alarmingly not up to par. Sam- going to need to be more assertive and look to score more. His passes were under high pressure defense, but some were horrid. Bandumel, Gary, and Dawson are our athletes who could fit in on Big Ten rosters. Maybe Lawrence….maybe. KT has been a nice surprise, this offseason some of you completely wrote him off and basically inferred he wasn’t a division I player. He’s doing exactly what we all could’ve hope for, coming off the bench, hitting three to four three’s and sometimes being crafty and hitting his free throws. Need to bounce back with confidence this Sunday. Then it’s gonna get brutal.

Wilhelm is probably about Summit League level, and that’s being generous. His footwork and mobility are about 1/4 of a Hunter Dickinson -

How in the holy hell is Wilcher still out there?? Tominaga is a more viable scoring option at this point -

I’m gonna say it. CJ Wilcher is not a division I guard, athletically. Maybe division II. -
Yikes. Will our men fare better in Omaha?

Hate to nitpick here, but I was disappointed…..I’m the student section. Frankie Fiddlesticks shoots not one, not two, but three air balls and the crowd didn’t let him have it every single time he touched it. Much fuller student section tonight vs. Monday Loved seeing other guys step up and still win without scoring from certain guys. Last years team, if we didn’t have a monster game from one or two we were definitely cooked -

Agree with you Norm. Was impressed at the Chadron State game as well- Nate Loesner was out leading the warmups and they were more like practice type drills than just messing around. Looked well organized too. I’m hoping some of KT’s international experience this past summer helped w confidence. I agree, he does appear to be more athletic than last year. My source very close to the team said FH chose to have him 1st or 2nd off the bench for scoring punch, when he arrived in Lincoln most recently he supposedly dropped 46 in a scrimmage, maybe that’s the game Griesel was referring to in his postgame presser comments about KT lighting it up -

I liked a few things, still a lot of improvement but it’s early on. Baundumel, Dawson, and Gary are Big 10 league players, at least athletically. Collier would’ve loved to have just one of those guys. Sam is sneaky crafty around the hoop. Looked at times like he didn’t have a high motor but then at times he did. A guy next to me said it looked like he was distracted. But he did lead the team in scoring. Someone tells me KT 30 had 19 and I would’ve guessed all threes or free throws. He had 10 points in the paint, a few nice cuts and some nifty drives and finger rolls. And I know it’s Maine. But if we’re gonna give praise to the other players for playing well against Maine, I don’t want to hear that KT30 is only going to do this against teams like Maine. He definitely has a role on this team and I have to wonder if his increased role had something to do with Ramel redshirting??? Anyway, fellas, a win is a win -

Giving up 3’s while scoring 2’s…Hoiberg watches and doesn’t call a timeout as our lead dwindles from 8, 7, 6, 5, and is now at 2. Terrible defense and nobody can blame Doc… -

Wilcher lost 15 pounds, changed his body, and still didn’t gain any explosiveness. Some on here questioned if 30 KT could help us at all, or even deserve any minutes. I, for one, at glad he didn’t transfer. He can get hot and help from the outside. -

Yes. Striking distance. Fought back and went on a 10-2 run. Two possession game with about 3 minutes left. If anyone expected us to go to Boulder and dominate a pac-12 preseason pick to finish 3 or 4 in the league then they are delusional. -

Man, some of you guys need to just stay away. And this is coming from a non kool-aid and rose colored glasses wearing fan. I’m typically pretty critical and vocal. But this is an exhibition game against a capable power 5 team that has big dance potential. One with good players and good size. And we ran a vanilla offense without Walker down low and stayed within striking distance until the final minute. Let’s let some things play out here fellas….
