In order for us to win we pretty much have to have our "A" going for 4 quarters. Good teams can usually get by with their "B" games against lesser opponents. We can't. Our bench is pretty weak. This is a result of poor recruiting. Not too bag on Maddie Krull, but for a transfer, she is not an impact player. Coach Williams really needs to go get a couple of impact players for next year and beyond. If she doesn't, we'll always be in the lower half of the league.

This was a super embarrassing performance by the girls and the coaches. I don't remember seeing a game like this where almost all of Illinois points (other than 5 three's and freethrows) were layups. They just dribbled right down the lane and had layups or post up layups. Do the coaches not teach defense? Since Illinois wasn't hitting their 3's and were getting all layups, I would think the coach mlght think about going to some kind of zone?? The one thing I can't blame the coaches on is our inability to make point blank layups. This season has been so disappointing and I don't see it improving.
-
Unfortunately this team just doesn't play smart basketball. I have to think they must play this way in practice. Apparently the coaches can't teach them to play smart.

I totally agree with HUD. I thought the same when we were up 6 with 22 seconds left. I thought the game was pretty much over. Let them have the 2 but whatever you do, don't foul them. Same with Haiby. She wasn't going to block it so don't go near her to be called for a foul. We definitely don't play smart.

It's getting really frustrating to watch game after game of the women making dumb mistakes. 26 turnovers! That is unacceptable at this level. I realize that good teams will have some turnovers every game but this is terrible. Every game we have several turnovers just trying to get the ball in under our basket. We actually deserved to lose this game. We blew a 21 point lead late in the 3rd quarter. We just got lucky at the end. We'll probably win a few more games but this year has been a huge disappointing year. I hope Coach Williams actually goes out and gets some good impact players for next year.

We need to stop trying to lob the ball to the post when they are not open. Half the time it gets stolen or they throw it out of bounds. There is an art to making that pass. Too low or too high and it's stolen. Also half the time they do catch the ball they miss the bunny.

If we are going to win more games, Jaz has got to change her mind set. We need her to start thinking about scoring. She seems to just want to dribble all over the court and look for someone to pass to. So many times she is in the lane and has a decent shot but she passes it out way too often. I also agree with some others that Coach Williams needs to get better inbounds plays. I said this a few years ago about the coach. We seldom get a good shot on an inbounds play so at least have a safe inbounds play to just get it in. Good to see Krull thinking more about scoring than just dribbling and passing to someone else.

I agree with NUtball. That was the worst performance by a Husker women's basketball team I've ever seen. And it was against a really bad team. Twice in one season we score only 5 points in the first quarter. We must have broken a record for most misses on basically uncontested layups. I hope the team is really embarrassed becaused I know I am for watching it.

If Weidner's injury is season-ending (looks bad), that will really hurt the team. She does everything for us. Haiby looked close to being her old self. That will help a lot. I really like what I've seen with Mendelson. She's a good rebounder, good at blocking shots or at least makes it harder to shoot inside, hustles and has an inside game. She shoots free throws well. She hasn't attempted a 3 pointer yet but I think she will knock a few down. In the warmup against Wyoming I saw her make 6 3's in a row. Nice looking stroke. Sorry to bag on Steward but her best asset is shooting 3's and she can be streaky. She has no inside game and doesn't play good defense. I think her playing time will be decreasing.

Congraulations Lady Huskers!@!!! This is how I envisioned them playing this year. Keep it going. I am so used to having the football team have a lead and somehow screw up and lose. You not only held your lead but increased it.

Is there any bar/restaurant in Lincoln that would have it on their tv's?

Nebraska (6-17) vs Minnesota (11-9)* game thread
longtimefan replied to cipsucks's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I have never missed watching a NU men's game if it was televised in my life. For some reason (probably because I'm so tired of watching them lose) I completely forgot they were playing tonight. About 10:30 tonight I realized I forgot. I told my wife "I'm going to look up the results now and wouldn't it be funny if they won?" I started reading the posts here and we were up at the half. I told myself to not get too excited because we always find a way to lose. I couldn't believe we held on. Now I'm wondering if the losing streak was all my fault. Maybe I shouldn't watch anymore games so they can win??? -
I knew when I only put Venson (I'm not good at names sometimes) Hamilton's name down I probably would get a few other names. But I'm looking at 60+ years of teams with maybe a handful of decent post players. Hoppen, King and Chandler were decent but I don't remember them winning any league championships or having any really great teams. As far as Aleks Maric,, he used to drive me crazy with all the bunnies he missed around the basket. The guy was 6'10" and couldn't dunk the ball unless he got a run at it. He'd miss half a dozen point blank bunnies every game trying to bank them in instead of going up and slamming it down. He would have averaged another 10+ points a game if he could of jumped and dunked. The bottom line is NU has failed to get quality big men and you can't be really successful without one.
-
When we shoot free throws, as soon as our shooter releases the ball, our two rebounders promptly run away from the basket to assure us of never getting an offensive rebound. I'm not sure why we even put our two rebounders on the free throw line. It would be easier to have them just go back to our opponents basket.. We are also the greatest team for never being able to recruit one decent post player in the last 60 years I've been listening and watching the huskers (Vincent Hamilton was the only exception). Almost all the weak nonconference teams we play each year have better posts than we have. Until we get a decent post player we will always suck!

I've watched the NU women's' basketball teams for quite a while and this is one of the most exciting teams to watch. I don't know if there will ever be a team as good as the 2009-10 team with Kelsey Griffin and Lindsey Moore and gang but these girls are a lot of fun to watch. This has got too be the deepest team with talent at every position. There isn't much let down when anyone subs in. It all starts with the play of Jaz Shelly. She does it all. I know it may be too early to praise them this much but so far they deserve it. Hopefully everyone stays healthy and they continue to play as a team. I've followed the men's bb team since I was a child but last night I had a choice to either watch the women's game or the men''s and I chose the women's. Fortunately I was able to see the last of the men's game. Or maybe I should say unfortunately I saw it. I usually don't like to criticize the refs but in this game they screwed us big time.

I get so tired of us occasionally beating teams that are better than us and then losing to teams we should beat. We seem to always play to whatever level our opponent is. My biggest beef is our post defense. Why are our posts continually coached to let our opponents post up down low every time??? We give them perfect position every time to shoot an easy layup or we foul them. They should be either fronting them or at least playing on their side to deny the entry pass. I wish Cain would be more of a consistent player. She'll have a good game and then disappear for a couple of games. Boy do we miss Bella Cravens. Tonight we got outhustled and outjumped for rebounds.
-
If you beat a ranked team twice is it still an upset? If I didn't know the result of the game and someone said NEB had 28 turnovers and Northwestern had only 4, NEB shot 51 times to Northwestern's 78, that our leading scorer only scored 5 points and our leading rebounder did not play, I would of bet everything I own that NEB lost. Course I would be dead now because my wife would have killed me!!

I love how if someone doesn't agree with your thoughts, then you resort to calling them names and swearing at them. What are you, a spoiled 13 year old? Grow up!!!! This is a discussion board. If you don't agree with someone's thoughts then please try to be at least courteous in explaining why you disagree in the future. That said, I want to congratulate the lady huskers and their coach(s) on getting this short handed team playing so well. I'll be honest, I never saw this happening a few weeks ago. Actually I don't think anyone did. I hope they continue to keep it up. Kind of reminds me of Tim Miles last few games when he only had a few players able to play. Also congrats to Cain. Best game of her life here so far. Hopefully this is how she will finish out the rest of her career here.

Well if you think us fouling them gives them time to re-set for a preplanned play then Rutgers would of called time out either before they took the ball out or when they got it over half court and set up a play. As I recall they had a time out left.
-
I was thinking the same thing. I think there was maybe 15 seconds and we had only 1 foul. They needed to make a 3 point shot so we should of fouled when the ball handler got near or just over the half court line. Depending on how many seconds would have been left, then we possibly could of fouled again, but before they got near the 3 point line. Strategically I think that would of been a smart call by our coach. If they had made the 3 point shot I think you would of heard people wondering or criticizing why Coach Williams didn't call for the foul(s).
-
Good win for the ladies. They battled hard, especially on the boards. I'm really impressed with Cravens ability and desire to get rebounds. I wish we would improve on the silly unforced turnovers we seem to do every game. Not sure how a coach fixes that. We had 19 to their 10. Also I wish Coach Williams would come up with some in bounds plays under our own basket where there is a safe outlet to pass to. I know they try to run a play but nothing ever seems to work and we end up having to throw in a desperation pass to beat the 5 second rule and it gets stolen way too often.
-
If I could I would vote for all of the above.

I've always been a longtime fan of all Nebraska sports. I'll continue to be a WBB fan but it's hard to watch. It's kind of like when I drive by a car wreck, I can't help but look.

Our program is a joke. We'll be lucky to win another game this year. I know we have a decent recruiting class for next year but I'm not sure it's worth keeping this coach. It's time to hire a proven coach.

Illinois(2-1) vs. Nebraska (2-0) Game Thread

Have to tip my hat to Haiby, Bourne and Cravens tonight. They played great. Actually tip my hat to Cain also for making 4 free throws in a row when we really needed them.
