Our biggest advantage over Rutgers yesterday was that nobody had any current film on Trueblood. The cat's out of the bag on that one. Only secret weapon we have now is Justin Costello. But if we play him today, he won't be a surprise against Wisconsin. So, what's a coach to do? -
I agree. I'm in no way trying to suggest that anyone who wants Miles fired is low character and I'm really not directing this to anyone on this board.1 But I've seen other comments on other boards where people aren't satisfied simply going a different direction; I'm seeing (and have been seeing for some time now) people just being mean-spirited about their wish to have Miles fired and humiliated on his way out the door, as though he deliberately failed here, thereby causing our fans some sort of personal harm. Those people can't give Miles credit for what he has done, and one of those things is he's still fighting to get as many more Ws for the kids and the fans as he can before he's gone. That says a lot for him no matter whether he should be let go or retained. And I'm not expressing an opinion on that one way or the other. 1 With one or two minor exceptions.

I just hope the next coach, whoever it is, works as hard through adversity as Tim Miles does. The writing has been on the wall for awhile. It would have been easy to just cash in his chips and phone it in the last few games of the season. Thomas Allen is out with injury; Nana Akenten chooses to repeatedly violate team rules and you're forced to suspend him; you're down half a dozen players across the season and now you're down to 8 players available, including just three of the original starters and three other guys who weren't even rotation guys. And yet he's still arguing with the refs in the Iowa game and doing whatever they can to gameplan for Rutgers. We might get smoked by Maryland today, but it won't be because Miles and the staff quit on the team or on the season. He has a lot more character than a lot of the guys who are calling for his head.

If we somehow miraculously manage to beat Maryland with our roster issues right now, this is going to become a national story. I guarantee not everyone cheering for Nebraska at the arena yesterday was a Nebraska fan. We're the underdog; people love underdogs. People especially love underdogs who are facing particularly long odds while overcoming some adversity. That's where we are. As an added bonus, we have a coach on the hotseat, so we'd be an even bigger media darling. This has all the makings of Milan vs. Muncie Central. I would cast Tom Cruise in the role of Tim Miles so that a 6'2" actor could stand next to him and look like he's 6'8".

You almost have to include Brady Heiman in the "virtual walk-on" category. -

That may be what we'll have in 2 years. -

People who argue that Miles isn't the guy and should be fired (and shoulda been fired 2 years ago) keep saying this team has no identity. WTF? What do you mean this team has no identity? I see a team that consistently plays tough defense, doesn't typically turn the ball over, and tries to get the ball into the lane on offense. That's an identity. -

Holy crap. I am in stunned disbelief. Fire the Rutgers coach right now. His team, with a lot on the line, just lost to a team that played 7 total players including 2 guys who walked on. -

It was discussed on this board back at the time. Think of a recruit released from a former school who was available and might have had a connection to a new coach. -
So we have to sacrifice a goat, is that what you’re saying? Anyone have a goat they would be willing to volunteer? I don’t think you’ll be getting it back … if I understand how this thing is supposed to work.

Good point. I was off on dates. Thanks for the correction. I originally forgot about Karrington Davis too.

Five wins or Miles gets fired. Deal with it, all you Miles apologists.
-
That would be just about analogous.

I knew we'd have to give up something for those 3 national championships in football in the 90s, but I kinda figured that debt would have cleared the books by now.

You need a couple of asterisks next to Thor and Heiman. They're scholarship players, but they're not scholarship players like Watson, Palmer, and Roby are scholarship players. They're closer to Tanner Borchardt/Johnny Trueblood level than they are to the other three scholarship guys.

Y'know, my dad used to do some pretty amazing things with baling wire.
