KenPom 2023-2024 KenPom Rankings Thread
Norm Peterson replied to 49r's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Torvik is now projecting us at 12-8 in conference and 22 overall. We're favored in 3 out of 4 remaining games. And we're less than 2 point dogs at Ohio State. @cipsucks might be right. We might just win out. -

In the month of February, Jamarques was 2-12 from 3-pt range coming into tonight. And just like that, he's 7-17. -

I tell ya, if McKenzie Mgbako would want to enter the transfer portal after this season, I sure as hell would take him. He's just a freshman. -

My thing has been that if we make the dance and win a 1st round game, I pity the fools who'll have to play us the next round. We have to be a very tough team to scout on short notice. Some might call our defense junk, but it's different than most teams run and it's effective. And how do you game plan for 7 different guys who can uncork from deep? -

Kenpom isn't refreshing after this game as quickly as they usually do. But what kind of bounce do we get with a 15-point road win at Indiana? Hmmmm? They hammer us if we don't put up 30 against Rider. Better reward us for a big road win tonight. NET better also. Or I'll be sending out a strongly worded memo. And take them off my Christmas Card list. -

It's nice having that guy who makes clutch plays all the time. Sam Hoiberg is just a wizard when it comes to that. -

Hoosier crowd is booing. That's tough for a team to bounce back from. Really demoralizing when you're own crowd turns on you. -

I think Northwestern gets to 12 conference regular season wins. Their remaining 3 at home, they should win. The 2 on the road, they should lose. They'll finish 3rd to Purdue and Illinois, and slide in just ahead of Wisconsin. Wisconsin probably also finishes with 12 wins but Northwestern would have the head-to-head advantage over Wisconsin. Michigan St is still in the running for 12 wins. They have 2 home and 2 road. One road game is a probable L against Purdue but they could pick up a W at Indiana. If Michigan St just gets to 11 wins, then they're probably the 6th seed and we would be the 5th, in all likelihood. I don't see a probable scenario where Iowa gets to 11 wins and it's possible for Minnesota but only if they beat us at home. So, if I have this sized up correctly (I almost certainly have not) then we are probably looking at a 5th seed in the conference tournament and a first round bye. We'll take on the winner of Ohio State and Penn State, who'll have one day of rest. And then we're probably looking at Wisconsin the next day. -

Iowa has too far to go to jump us and MSU is too solid to drop that far, but ... -

Yeah, and they owe us for the last kid from Waukee we had on our roster.

If we're going the route of former 5-stars, why not add Omaha Biliew to the mix? Neither are playing much where they are. Both were recruited here and had at least *some* interest. Something to ponder, anyway. -
How about Omaha Biliew? He can't be happy at ISU. Getting no playing time. And I believe he visited here and had some interest for awhile.

Is it too soon for a "play a pickup game with him" joke? C'mon, laugh.

There were a lot of empty seats for a sold-out game. Hope you found the spare tickets you needed. -
According to Torvik, we'd be very strong favorites to win the last two at home. Somewhat favored at Indiana and Michigan. And fairly firm underdogs at Ohio State. Wed 2-21 A 91 (Ⅱ) • Indiana -1.1, 75-73 54% .49 Sun 2-25 H 69 (Ⅲ) • Minnesota -7.1, 76-69 75% .27 Thu 2-29 A 52 (I) • Ohio St. +2.3, 73-71 41% .62 Sun 3-03 H 90 (Ⅲ) • Rutgers -7.8, 70-62 80% .23 Sun 3-10 A 97 (Ⅱ) • Michigan -1.7, 76-74 57% .47 Projected Record: 21-10 (11-9) RECORD W Which, doing the math per @HuskerFever, means Torvik thinks we should win three of the remaining five.
-
Exactly. See, though I don't understand how they come up with it, I remember ppl like @49r patiently trying to explain to me that even though we might be favored in all the remaining games, the analytics people might project a different record than 5-0.
-
Not doubting you, but who's saying we win out? We have 5 games left, three on the road, and our current conference record is 8-7. Winning out would put us at 13-7. That would tie for the most conference wins this century and the 2nd best conference win %. If we do that, surely we're a lock regardless what happens in the conference tournament, right?
-
Ohio St solidifying Q1 status for our road matchup with them is a good thing because it gives us more of a chance to control our own destiny. Win it and it doesn't matter how the committee looks at Q1 losses vs. Q2 losses.

To put road wins in perspective: There are currently 11 Big Ten conference teams with at least TWO conference road wins. Even Michigan has one. Only tOSU and we have none. Came close twice. Got blown out the other times. We have 3 more chances to pull the rabbit out of the hat and nab that elusive conference road win. It'd be nice to grab two.
