Jackonville's leading returning scorer broke out of a bit of a slump last game, putting up 24 point mostly by going 6-10 from 3 pt range. He also leads the team in assists so the Huskers will need to keep tabs on him at all times.
Opposing player to watch: Rinaldo Mafra
The Gamecocks have absolutely no height. Their Brazilian "big man" checks in at 6-7 220 and tends to only play when they need to match up against height. Would love to see these guys exchange words in Portuguese while battling down low!
No gimmies for this team
Jacksonville St. isn't quite as good as their record might indicate as their 8 wins have come against creampuffs and they've been blown out by the two good teams they've played...though they did manage to put up 45 on Oregon. They've been pretty decent defensively but they've actually been just a little worse than Nebraska on offense... supplementing their horrible shooting by making their way to the free throw line.
The Huskers have a huge height advantage in this game as Jacksonville St fields one of the smallest teams in Div I. Surprisingly for a guard oriented team, they turn the ball over quite a bit. The Gamecocks do grab quite a few offensive rebounds from all those missed shots they take and excel at putting up points at the free throw line. Should the Huskers be looking to foul someone at any point, I'd suggest Ronnie Boggs and his 35.7 FT %.
This is a game that Miles should use to jump start Ubel and Almeida given there is little there to stop them. Perhaps the Huskers will be a bit more aggressive on the offensive boards though a couple of guards should always be selling out on the break. The Huskers just need to guard the 3 point line, be disciplined enough to not get into foul trouble, and work the ball inside. While the Huskers are looking to get things going on offense they could probably hold this Jacksonville St team under 30 if they really tried.
While the Huskers should be able to break their two game losing streak, expect this to be yet another ugly game
Prediction: Huskers 53 - Jacksonville St 44 with a .4% chance of Runzas
