Huskers Clash with Syracuse in NCAA First Round Friday

The Nebraska women’s basketball team made history by earning its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and will take on Syracuse Friday in the first round at Columbia, S.C.

Tip-off between the ninth-seeded Cornhuskers and eighth-seeded Orange at Colonial Life Arena is set for 6:30 p.m.

Nebraska seniors Emily Cady, Brandi Jeffery, Tear’a Laudermill and Hailie Sample made history by advancing to their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament. The seniors are also the first class in Husker history to produce four straight 20-win campaigns.

Cady is set to tie a Nebraska record with her 132nd consecutive start. Emily also needs just five rebounds to catch Jordan Hooper at No. 2 on the Nebraska career rebounds list (1,110). Cady ranks sixth among active NCAA rebounders with 1,105 in her career. She has added 1,441 points and 303 assists, while ranking among the top five players in school history with 114 career blocks.

Sample has started 131 games alongside Cady, while Laudermill has made 61 straight starts. Jeffery has added 38 career starts to give the seniors more than 300 combined career starts.

Syracuse heads into the NCAA Tournament as a No. 8 seed after producing a 21-9 overall record that included an 11-5 mark in the ACC. The Orange tied Duke for fourth in the final conference standings, before being knocked out of the second round of the ACC Tournament by No. 13 seed Wake Forest.

Syracuse still has plenty of weapons in a starting five dominated by sophomores and juniors. Sophomore Alexis Peterson leads the Orange with 15.7 points per game. Brianna Butler has pitched in 13.3 points. Cornelia Fondren has averaged 7.5 points while ranking second on the team in rebounds (5.5). Briana Day, a 6-4 center, gives the Orange size inside while nearly averaging a double-double with 9.8 points and a team-best 10.6 rebounds per game.

Here is the coverage map for the Huskers and Syracuse. If you live in the gray shade you should be able to get the whole game instead of whip around coverage. Anything outside of that will get you either another game or whip around coverage.

I think the most important statistic in this game will be turnovers. If we can keep a low count say 12 and under we should be in pretty good shape. Secondly, hit 3 point shots which will make the Orange guard the three point arc and open up the middle for Emily and the drive to the bucket by Tee. Third point of emphasis defend the three point shot, Syracuse likes to put up a lot of them so get a hand in the face of the shooter. And rebound the basketball.

Got it tied up let's keep it going and finish this thing right!  We get Emily back now hope she can stay out of foul trouble. Got to rebound the ball better and keep a body on the outside shooter. They're getting too many open looks.

getting open looks from people that are shooting 25% on the season. so what do you do, do you leave them open and guard the scorers or guard the 25% shooters and leave the scorers?
