Huskers Shoot for Sweep of Wildcats Sunday in Evanston

The No. 21 Nebraska women’s basketball team shoots for a sweep of its first two-game Big Ten series, when the Huskers travel to Evanston, Ill., to take on Northwestern Sunday afternoon. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Wildcats is set for 4 p.m.

Nebraska is coming off a 77-75 last-second loss to nationally ranked Purdue in Lincoln on Sunday. It was the Huskers’ first Big Ten home loss at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Rachel Theriot is leading the Huskers in scoring in Big Ten action with 18.6 points per game, while adding 7.0 assists. In the first meeting with Northwestern, Theriot had 19 points, six rebounds, eight assists and two steals.

Jordan Hooper continues to lead the Huskers in scoring and rebounding on the season with 19.5 points and 10.1 boards per game. JHoop owns 2,017 points and 982 rebounds in her career. She is 18 boards away from becoming the fifth Big Ten Conference player in history to reach the combined 2,000-point, 1,000-rebound milestones.

Emily Cady is also making a strong case for All-Big Ten honors. Em is averaging 16.4 points and 12.0 rebounds in Big Ten play, with four straight double-doubles.

Northwestern enters the weekend with a 12-7 record and a 2-4 Big Ten mark after dropping an 90-65 loss at Purdue. The Wildcats, who went 10-3 in non-conference play, defeated the Boilermakers 71-68 in Evanston. The Wildcats are 2-1 at home in league play, with their only setback coming in a 76-74 loss to in-state rival Illinois. Northwestern is averaging 73 points at home in Big Ten play, while allowing 67.3.

Nebraska owns a 7-2 lead in the all-time series with the Wildcats, including wins in the last three meetings as Big Ten opponents.

Probable Starters:

Nebraska Cornhuskers
3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Jr. - F - 6.1 ppg
23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Jr. - F - 14.3
35 - Jordan Hooper - 6-2 - Sr. - F - 19.5
33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - So. - G - 13.6
1 - Tear’a Laudermill - 5-9 - Jr. - G - 8.6

Northwestern Wildcats
5 - Alex Cohen - 6-5 - Jr. - F - 6.6 ppg
10 - Nia Coffey - 6-1 - Fr. - F - 15.8
3 - Ashley Deary - 5-4 - Fr. - G - 6.5
24 - Christen Inman - 5-10 - Fr. - G - 13.1
25 - Maggie Lyon - 6-1 - So. - G - 13.4

Jordan Hooper enters Sunday’s game at Northwestern needing 16 points to catch Kelsey Griffin at No. 3 on Nebraska’s career scoring list. Hooper needs six more double-doubles to match Kelsey Griffin’s Nebraska career record of 40.

Emily Cady is the only forward in the conference to rank among the top 10 in scoring (16.4 ppg, 8th) and rebounding (12.0 rpg, 2nd) in Big Ten play. Cady is tied with Jordan Hooper for the Big Ten lead with eight double-doubles this season, which is tied for 34th nationally.

Rachel Theriot has scored 231 points and has 101 assists through 17 games. Last season, she scored 211 points and had 101 assists while playing all 34 games.

The countdown to Kelsey Griffin "jersey retirement day" is underway. Make plans to attend the festivities (next Wednesday Jan. 29th) when Michigan comes to the PBA, to honor one of the top players to ever don the scarlet and cream.

I agree Row6.  I know that the starters were given some rest this week and that the 3 bench players were going to get a lot of reps.  If we could just get 10-15 minutes of steady play out of them, it would help immensely.

The last 2 posts use the word "steady" with regard to 3 bench players.  We haven't gotten steady or consistent play from the 5th starter let alone the bench.  I realize there is always a chance that steady and consistent play will suddenly happen when it's been missing all year.  But I don't like the chances.  T and Brandy are 3rd year players in the program, and it sure looks like its a lottery each night as to what we get out of them.  Murren plays hard and can shoot it,  but is limited in size and speed for extended minutes. Havers has been an absolute turnover machine and they just can't keep her on the floor as a result.  Well, here's hoping for sudden, unexpected improvement.

i don't know what nw has coming in for recruits, but, glancing at their roster combined with watching a couple of their tv games---i predict this will be a team to be reckoned with for the next few years. may not quite be title material, but, could be top 6 and will give plenty of teams headaches. i believe they start 3 freshman?

if huskers go 6-0, Samuel Adams for everyone!!!  :)

I think the operative word in my previous post is " if ". If we can get 3 bench players to perform steadily they can make up for the starter or starters that may not be performing up to capability. The Huskers have been in every game in the league sans the MSU game and "if" we can get positive production from at least 3 on the bench we will be there come crunch time at the end of each of the next 4 games be it on the road or PBA.

34-34 at the half. Huskers squandered a 7 point lead the last minute and a half.

Cady and Theriot on the bench with 3 fouls each.

Hooper with 11 points, Laudermill with 9, Havers having a good 1st half with 6 points and 5 rebounds.
