If this is the case, what good is the infield fly rule?

The reason for the infield fly rule is to eliminate the purposeful drop to turn an easy double play. Let's say there is no infield fly there. If Carey drops it on purpose, we could have set our 2nd baseman on the bag at 2nd and got a double force out by going SS -> 3B -> 2B.

It's there to protect the hitting team, but it doesn't hinder the hitting teams opportunity to advance or score.

Well, if he takes off early, you just catch it and double him off.

The rule isn't designed to protect the defense; it's designed to protect the baserunners from what we just did. Every coach on the planet tells his guys to just go back to the bag and stand there when the infield fly is called. Just a total brain fart by USC - you rarely see that work in 12 and under ball, let alone at the D-1 level.

7th inning at the plate

Strike out swinging (3rd straight k)

Fly out to left

Line out to right (7 straight retired)

The only drama left in this game is can we avoid getting shutout.

Par for the season.  Runners on 3rd and 2nd no outs

Strike out looking

Strike out swinging

Little looper to 2nd

Right now this offense is inept.

We have to have the worst offense not only in the Big 10, but very possibly all of the nation.

Sigh. Just can't get any momentum going.

This may not be very popular, but it's time for the coaches to stop eff-ing around with the lineup and rely on the vets who won the jobs in fall and preseason. Tell the vets we're going to ride you the next several weeks, even if you're slumping, and you're not getting yanked out of the lineup after an 0-fer. We need Swanny, Frost, and Sanderson to deliver some power to generate runs. We need Stokes to get on a heater like he did in May last year. We need Helligso to hit like he did last year when he was facing us. 😂

The only way we're salvaging this season is if those vets get going. We clearly can't survive scoring 3 or 4 runs a game. So if the vets don't get going, we're screwed anyway.

The only young guy I'm playing is Nunez. Everyone else has shown they can get hot and produce runs at this level in the past. It's time to ride them and try to give them some confidence.

It probably won't be popular because it means next weekend is probably going to be a bloodbath at home. But we have to try to get these guys going before B1G play resumes the following weekend. And our RPI is so screwed right now we have virtually zero chance of earning an at-large, so the Oregon St series means nothing. We have to focus on trying to get into the top 12 of the league at this point, so we don't miss the B1G tourney.

My lineup:

  • C-Helligso
  • 1B-Stone
  • 2B-Nunez
  • SS-Carey
  • 3B-Stokes (maybe Overbeek against RHP)
  • LF-Swanson
  • CF-Brumbaugh
  • RF-Frost
  • DH-Sanderson

This lineup is going to struggle defensively, too, which will cause a lot of grumbling from the home fans. But the pitching staff is the strength of the team, and they're just going to have to carry the load of pitching around defensive issues.

It's no longer time to think about NCAA berths - it's time to focus on making sure we qualify for the B1G tourney.
