  1. 1. Taking out emotion (based solely on the Selection Committee team sheets), which team had the better season?

It was this time last year that we were analyzing Delaware State and Marist scores, tracking bubble teams, and wondering if a play-in win would count as an NCAA tournament win.

This season has taken a drastic change the moment we flipped our calendars to 2019. But I was curious to see how our current season stands, in the eyes of the Selection Committee team sheets, versus last season. As you may remember, the narrative was "not enough quality (Quadrant 1) wins," not enough quality opportunities (easy scheduling), and "the Big Ten is down this year." It's also important to note that the NCAA changed the primary ranking system from RPI to NET this season.

So here it is. Nebraska's 2018-2019 current snapshot (through 3/2/19) versus a 2017-2018 snapshot right at the Selection Sunday deadline. Based on the selection committee team sheets, taking out emotion, who had the better season?

This Season (As of Mar. 2, 2019) / Last Season Selection Sunday (Mar. 11, 2018):

Record: 15-14 / 22-10

NET/RPI: 51 / 56

KPI: 73 / 64

SOR: 59 / 35

BPI: 37 / 63

POM: 45 / 57

SAG: 39 / 58

Avg NET/RPI Win: 133 / 180

Avg NET/RPI Loss: 35 / 54

Div I Only Record: 14-14 / 22-10

Div I Non-Conf Record: 9-1 / 9-4

Div I Only SOS: 70 / 114

Div I Only Non-Conf SOS: 216 / 291

Quadrant 1: 2-11 / 1-6

Quadrant 2: 5-3 / 2-3

Quadrant 3: 3-0 / 9-1

Quadrant 4: 4-0 / 10-0

This really stands out to me for some reason. I'm surprised it was that high this season, given preseason perception of our non-conference schedule.

Does this take into account games that are still going?  If so, OKST, Creighton, Clemson and Seton are all struggling which kind of kills us.

In my opinion, last year was better and it’s not even close. We finished 4th in the conference and we were in the discussion for making the tournament at this time one year ago.  Beating Creighton this season was nice but outside of that we don’t have a lot of positives. I would gladly trade that win in exchange for not collapsing the last 6 weeks.

Another point to note, since it was a discussion as to why we were left out of the tournament conversation last year:

NCAA Tourney teams that NU defeated in the regular season:

2017-2018: (1) Michigan

2018-2019: (TBD) Currently, Clemson, Minnesota, Seton Hall; Michigan State and Iowa remain on the schedule

When all is said and done, it's likely only 1 of the Clemson/Minnesota/Seton Hall trios will make the tournament.
