came across this from StarTribune in mpls: The Gophers athletic department has already lost $4 million in the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic with estimates of losses ultimately reaching as high as $75 million. Now it has to present its plan to navigate those potentially extreme losses to the Board of Regents. The Board released docket materials for the Friday presentation showing how the athletic department went from forecasting a $1 million revenue surplus in February after successful fundraising efforts and a fruitful football season to losing $4 million by April from canceled facilities rentals and a sharp drop in NCAA distributions, down to $225 million across Division I schools from a projected $600 million. While the department is saving some money during this time of canceled sports from travel, recruiting and event hosting, the department still will need to work toward a balanced $123 million budget this year. Hiring and spending freezes, reduction in summer school expenses as well as voluntary salary reductions for head coaches and senior staff are all occurring. The athletic department has not released pay cut specifics, but football coach P.J. Fleck, men's basketball coach Richard Pitino and women's basketball coach Lindsay Whalen all took one-week pay cuts. Per contracts, Fleck was set to earn $4.6 million this year, making his weekly salary about $88,462. Pitino makes $2.4 million annually, putting him about $46,154 per week. And Whalen is making $496,500, putting her at $9,548 per week.Athletic director Mark Coyle, who will present these strategies to the Board, and others in the athletic department also have taken pay cuts.

MSU adds post player: EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State head women's basketball coach Suzy Merchant announced that Lauren Rewers has been added to the 2020-21 roster. Rewers comes to Michigan State as a transfer from the University of Hawai'i and is a native of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. "Lauren is a versatile post player that will help us add depth to our center position. Her ability to block shots, score with her back to the basket, as well as face up and extend the defense will make an immediate impact on the court." Merchant said. Rewers is a 6-4 center, who played three seasons for the Rainbow Wahine. Last season as a junior, she averaged 6.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. She led the University of Hawai'i in blocked shots last season which was ninth in the Big West Conference. A graduate of Lake City High School, Rewers was a four-time first-team all-state selection and four-time first-team all-Inland Empire League. As a senior, she averaged 16.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, 5.9 blocks, 2.1 assists and 1.0 steal per game. Rewers joins Kendall Bostic (Kokomo, Indiana) and Matilda Ekh (Västerås, Sweden), Alisia Smith (Lansing, Michigan) and Jayla James (Upper Marlboro, Maryland), as the newest members of MSU women's basketball team.

ex-Oregon State (and ex-Maryland) player Destiny Slocum will join Mike Neighbors @ Arkansas for her final season. i could be wrong, but, didn't she leave Maryland after her freshman season to be "closer to home"? anyway, that's young people for ya'.

sounds like northwestern got a good one... "On offense, Morris has the height and physicality to be a dangerous post option for pick-and-rolls, layups and short jump shots. Morris fixed her shot form by relying less on her left hand as a guide and said she has gained confidence from the field and the free-throw line. Defensively, Morris is a powerful rebounder, using her size and agility to make stops all over the court. In a December 2019 game against Secaucus High School, she grabbed 16 rebounds, blocked three shots and added a steal. “The thing that she does on the court (of) defensively blocking shots, changing shots and clogging up the middle rebounding outlet (was) where she grew her game,” Silver said. “She really met all of my highest expectations.” https://dailynorthwestern.com/2020/04/19/sports/womensbasketball/womens-basketball-im-excited-to-come-in-and-be-a-part-of-this-team-how-5-star-freshman-anna-morris-can-help-lift-northwestern-into-big-ten-supremacy/

i might be way off, but, it does seem that coach frese has problems hanging on to a number of recruits. it's something that may be hidden a bit because she is such a good recruiter she just keeps bringing in top talent.
-
hope she doesn't end up at OSU....i believe she is from Ohio? imo, Austin is a huge loss.......in more than one way!

Badgers sign highly regarded Swedish player: Suddenly, the talent is flowing to the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball program from near and far.One day after landing a local product, Madison Edgewood’s Estella Moschkau, as a graduate transfer from Stanford, the Badgers added a highly regarded international prospect, Lovisa Djurstrom.Djurstrom, a 6-foot-4 forward from Gothenburg, Sweden, signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to become part of the UW 2020 recruiting class. The idea of playing in the U.S. is one that was enthusiastically encouraged by Geoff Golden, founder/director of B.C. Denver Basketball AAU program, who spent the past season coaching with the RIG Mark academy.“I was just really impressed with who she was as a person and her talent level,” Golden said. “When I got back I said, ‘you’re a fantastic player and you really need to consider coming to the U.S. and playing.’ She was interested in that and I’ve helped her in that process.“She has the size, the length and very nice athleticism. A lot of kids have that but she has the skill set. She’s really light on her feet, she can shoot the 3, she can handle it a little bit.

from espn's Jeff Borzello: According to a report by D1 Baseball, the NCAA Division I Council is expected to discuss a one-time transfer waiver on April 24 and then vote on May 20. The report also states that the waiver would go into effect immediately, granting all first time transfers immediate eligibility for the 2020-21 season -
came across this column on minnesota, so thought i would start a new topic. anyway, if interested in reading about other squad(s): https://www.forums.gopherhole.com/boards/threads/strib-early-look-at-2020-21-gophers-women-shows-a-young-deeper-basketball-team.96156/ this should be more of a "Whalen" squad......think they should finish somewhere in the top half of the Big Ten. of course, i thought last years squad would be a dangerous team, but, then the Pitts-Bello situation occurred.

Badger Courtney Fredrickson is headed to DePaul. Estella Moschkau a 6' 1" wing will be a grad transfer from Stanford. wouldn't surprise me if she ends up as a Badger. has her degree and i think it was between Badgers and Stanford in the beginning. ex-Gopher Destiny Pitts has been pretty quiet. would have to believe coach tested the waters there.
