Last game Essegian had a great pump fake and take to the lane. He anticipated the help and passed behind it to a cutting Gary for an easy basket. He baited the defense into it and made it pay off. I think we’re going to continue to like Essegian.

I think even our athleticism went up from last year. Getting to line 20.7 times per game vs 14.7 last year, rebounding margin is better, +5.4 vs +0.4. I know our competition is about to significantly increase, but those are our numbers right now.

I’ve watched the second half of this NW vs Iowa game, and I gotta say, I’ve found myself rooting for Iowa. NW has big guys that whine about everything to pair with Barnhizer who whines about everything. One of NWs bigs even got a foul upgraded to a flagrant by acting as though someone Essegian’s size threw him down. Martinelli is really good and can make something out of nothing.

I hope it’s Berke once he’s healthy.

I said a little better but more importantly, I think that they’re ahead of where last year’s team was at this point. Not shooting the three well the first few games made us have to figure out other ways to score. We can get to the line and are good once we’re there. On defense we’re long and can rotate a lot of guys in without much of a dip in performance. I’m almost talking myself into saying “better than last year”. Right now, maybe a little better than a year ago. But our ceiling appears like it could be much higher than last year. Just gotta keep climbing to it, and when we get there we’ll be better than last year.

The broadcast just showed Berke and Mast talking on the bench and my mind wandered to next year. My mouth was like one of Pavlov’s dogs hearing a bell.
