Ohio State gets that bucket counted and no one even questions it. Such is the world of being a nobody on the road at the Big Ten's premier team. So at the least Smith is shooting free throws right ? No Ohio State still had not reached 7 fouls...amazingly (not). If it was a shooting foul that basket would have counted.
-
What a pathetic end to an otherwise good half. Really pissed it down our legs. Doesn't help that Ohio State is allowed to bump and grind our guards all the way out to the mid court. Thought that was supposed to be a foul now? I guess not if you're a top 25 Big Ten team. Literally watched that De la valde whatever defend with his hand on webster's forearm the entire time he dribbles the ball.

Biggs did that too. It was pretty much the end of the comeback attempt and effectively the game. Then again, if he had made it, we might be talking about what a ballsy play it was... I wouldn't. A good shot is not determined by whether it goes in or not. One thing that puzzled fans when I coached high school was when they would hear me get on a player for a shot they made. Most people think a made shot must be a good thing. A made bad shot just encourages them to take more bade shots. A bad shot is a bad shot. If you noticed Miles had a player going to the scorer's table before Petteway's shot hit the rim. Chewing your players out for made shots, huh? You didn't, by chance, coach HS in Indiana, did you? Does the name Marvin Wood ring any bells for you? How about Shooter Flatch? Norm, I'm pretty sure he coached college basketball at North Carolina.........

I'll admit, I was very critical of him early on this season. When he transfered from Texas Tech, I thought he was just a David Rivers type player (and not just because of the hair). Boy was I wrong. At first, I didn't know what to think of the guy, but now I'm really starting to love having him on our team. His shot selection was, and at times still is, interesting to say the least. But he seems to have toned down the jacking of low percentage shots of late. He's scored 20+ in three straight games and 4 of the last 5. In those 5 games, he is 34-70, damn near 50% from the floor, and is 11-22, right at 50%, from 3. Of course he is also 22-26 (85%) from the FT line. These kinds of numbers are even better than you can ask of big-time scorers. I know we get caught up complaining about our lack of big men and why some marginal at best players don't play over other marginal at best players, but hey, when have we had a guy with this kind of offensive ability? He can drive, he can shoot with guys in his face, he can shoot off the dribble, he can draw fouls and he almost always makes his free throws. He is a potential All-Big 10 First Teamer, maybe not this year, but in the future. And he is only a sophomore! I hope Petteway can keep playing like he is and that the last we saw of Deverell Biggs continues, as they will be a fun 1-2 combo to watch the rest of this year and next.

I do not understand why our interior defense is so bad, but Rivers at 6-7 (?) with long arms and plenty of experience can't see the court, let alone the 7-0 center Miles recruited. Despite his poo-pooing about needing more big men, he has some "relatively" big guys who could contribute down there, but he seems content to want to play small. To play small and win, you need to have a bunch of lights out shooters. We have nothing close to that. I understand there is some give and take with guys and their offensive/defensive abilities. But the frustrating part is Miles seems to favor playing guys who can score but also give up just as many if not more points at the other end. Rivers won't give much on offense, but neither does Benny or Hawkins, and one could argue they hurt us more defensively than Rivers. David averages 1.6 steals per game, best on the team. He's one of our taller players too on a team that needs height.

"Over-hyped" is a very opinionated term. Maybe you're sick of hearing about him, but I honestly haven't heard that much about him this year until this injury. I had to go look up his averages and found he is actually doing better statistically than last year, without those NBA guards. And he was doing it while apparently needing back surgery.
-
Yeah he's not overrated. He will have a very long nba career doing what he does if he is healthy. He's a 15 ppg and 10 rpg NBA player for many seasons. Where is Almeida? Can't even sniff the nbdl probably. Only things he is sniffing end up on his stomach.
-
Wasn't he a 4 or 5 star recruit? And just a freshman last year?

Our lack of big men kills us. Pitchford isn't better than Brian Conklin in all honesty.

KenPom 2013-2014 KenPom Rankings Thread
GoBigRed replied to HuskerActuary's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Sorry to further digress by responding. I think you get four years for transition, the NCAA has guidelines for making sure things progress, presumably because they don't want Joe's University throwing up a "Now NCAA Division I" sign out in front of their admin building. I'm pretty sure UNO has one more year in purgatory and is eligible in 1915-16. btw, they looked pretty tough against Minnesota (tied at half), they're one big man away from being a pretty darn good team. Think you meant 2015-16 and their big men play is arguably stronger than ours so far this season. -
He would be a contributor for us, but he would not be the savior he was billed to be in high school. I think Miles would take him of he wanted to come here, but I don't think he'd blink twice if he didn't want to come here. BTW obviously I am assuming he will leave Louisville at some point. He isn't good enough, he isn't playing and they will just bring in better players next year.

KenPom 2013-2014 KenPom Rankings Thread
GoBigRed replied to HuskerActuary's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Is KenPom more accurate than the ESPN RPI updated daily by Joe Lunardi? Do they both try and determine the same thing, i.e. predicting the rankings the committee would use to determine the field? http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/rpi/_/page/1/sort/RPI ESPN: 1 Wisconsin 12 Ohio State 21 Illinois 24 Iowa 30 Michigan State 51 Minnesota 53 Nebraska 70 Indiana 75 Penn State 95 Purdue 96 Creighton 120 Northwestern 131 Nebraska-Omaha 143 Michigan KenPom: 2. Ohio St. 7. Wisconsin 14. Iowa 15. Michigan State 18. Creighton 23. Michigan 36. Minnesota 38. Indiana 54. Illinois 73. Penn State 82. Purdue 92. Nebraska 115. Northwestern 195. Nebraska-Omaha I think I like ESPN's better. -
http://www.dukechronicle.com/articles/2012/01/24/low-attendance-forces-duke-athletics-sell-student-seats Thanks for posting that, Dimes. Even Duke, DUKE, is prone to poor student turnout at basketball games. Their student attendance DROPPED after they won a National Championship. Makes calling out Nebrasketball's student section look ridiculously silly.
-
By the way, the Cameron Crazies pay $0 to attend Duke basketball games. Nebraska students actually have to pay money to see the product we put on the court every year, so let's not talk about what a great discount they get.
-
Yes. This is like Kansas football looking at the Nebraska football crowd and saying "Why can't we have that?" The last time Nebraska made the NCAA Tournament, current UNL students were 3-6 years old. Win, and they will come. Until then, the student section will always be good for conference games and key non-conference games, and bad for games against Prairie View A&M and Alabama A&M Tech State.
-
Yes, that lowly Arkansas State team that outscored us by double digits in the 2nd half. That's the students' fault? Guess we won't win any road games this year if our players can't get themselves psyched to play.
-
1. The student section has been fantastic for the 2 games that have mattered. The rest are just bad opponents and we don't exactly have a top 25 team out there. We're going to have to become something before NU basketball games become a cool place to be against crap opponents. For now, it's still seen as somewhat of a joke. Games like last week at Creighton don't help. 2. It's a lot louder on the floor than it sounds up top. I sit in the 300s and it sounds quiet, then you go down near the floor and it's very different. 3. I think there is a perception that games on TV are what every other place is like every game. It's not true. Usually whatever game is on TV is ranked teams or big games (Miami). I saw highlights of a UCONN (top 15) game a while ago when they killed some not very good team. Literally half the seats in the sections around the floor were empty and it was the first half. Big Ten teams are about to start rolling through here and the environment will be just fine. I believe we are undefeated at home as well...and a lot of students are able to finish finals before finals week nowadays, so I'm sure some have already home home.

The embarrassment has not even reached the same stratosphere as what has happened "over there".

uneblinstu's post game chatter: ed 6, vol 10: Creighton
GoBigRed replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Yeah, that was the athleticism advantage we were supposed to utilize but inexplicably waited until the game was over to start doing. -
And no offense to you, but I think that's an unfair statement on a player we've seen play 11 (?) minutes. I wasn't trying to make it sound like he's a bad player. I certainly hope he's awesome, and I actually think he is going to be pretty good. I'm saying it'd be nice to have another good guard with playing experience heading into next year. Fuller is already going to be learning to play in Division I games this time next year, and it sounds like we may have a transfer or two coming in who will have to sit out the fall semester. We've seen what the adjustment period is like for new guys and it's pretty rough, so I'm all for Hawkins going through his growing pains now when we're not really going anywhere this year anyway. We want to be a regular NCAA Tournament team by the time Hawkins is a senior. All I was saying is that if we have reached that level in 3.5 years, then getting commits like Hawkins really shouldn't be that big of a deal.
-
You can't redshirt everybody, guys. No offense to Hawkins, but if in 3 1/2 years we don't have other young players on board who are as good or better than him ready to step in and replace him, then we're in big trouble.
-
Not to get in the middle of all this because I know the opinion of a Jays fan isn't really what you are looking for, but the ball is clearly in Petteway's hands when Gibbs goes all Superfly Jimmy Snuka, just look at the picture posted in this thread. So it wasn't a loose ball? Exactly.
