HHCC Game #16 - at Rutgers (Jan. 8, 1:00 PM CST)

I'm putting us on the board NU 67 RU 63 -
Overall not a bad performance I thought. Gabe brown was a difference maker all night. Played competitive and that's better than if you had asked me last night. -Walker forced Bingham out of the game by constantly going at him. Wished they had attacked marble or Sissoko more at the rim, but forcing Bingham out helped open that up -tale of two halves for Bryce. First half thought he was controlled and picked his spots well. Second half he tried to force it too much with passes, but I'll say he was a net positive today -I thought lakes gave them good minutes in the ones he played. With how much lat is struggling, I might look his way more often. -Verge is starting off big ten play with two straight meh games. He'll have an opportunity to get back on track against Geo baker, but today wasn't his night. -keisei was kinda hunted I thought today, which led to the switch of CJ, who I thought played decent defense. OSU was a good game for the team, but I thought today showed me the same if not more. Adding Trey back will help on defense and ball handling responsibilities, which will help the overall team performance. Onto Rutgers. I'm half thinking they can win that if this team shows up. But it's never a guarantee they do

I liked what I saw from him running the show as the PG last year when Banton was dealing with COVID. -

That first paragraph is pretty much where I'm at too. Didn't expect much, but I'm a bit impressed. Kinda. If verge plays well tonight, I think it's a different game. Second half, you probably play him for now. Once Trey comes back, you have options on who to play at the lead guard. Robin said sometime next week is the most likely outcome. Maybe Illinois, but others more likely. -

Couple late night thoughts before the game -this needs to be a good Andre game. Bingham is much more athletic and is among the leaders in the big ten in blocked shots. See how wake fares for a while, then switch to Andre. They play marble as the backup, which is where Walker can take advantage. -i said it in the post game OSU thread, Hauser isn't a matchup for lat with how often Hauser relocates on the perimeter. So give Keon a shot or CJ. -gabe brown is currently their leading scorer and he gets his by driving or shooting from 3 primarily. I don't have high expectations for this game other than be competitive and play defense. Continuing to force turnovers will also help here. -
please let something good happen.

To be fair to your point, they had a timeout when lidell was shooting. Used one after his first FT make. Apparently the play design was for Bryce, which I get. But Kobe ended up with the ball, and I hated it from that point. So they did draw a play up, just wanted those extra 3 or so seconds. Not inbounding the ball that first time was bad though. -
As far as the lat debate right now. He's bad and I've said it since he tried to win the Nevada game with a live dribble and turned it over. Issue is, he's the only option with Wilhelm down right now. Lakes got some ticks, but he would've been ABUSED by EJ. Same can be said for CJ and Keon. I didn't think he played horrid today, but the last 3 or so minutes was a case study on why Wilhelm is an upgrade over him next year. Hit the side of the backboard on a 3, missed 2 FTs, and missed one more 3. Against MSU, HOPEFULLY we see more a mix of different guys, they play Hauser, Hall, and at times marble. But those two primarily. Hopefully we see more CJ in that spot with Keisei, Verge (or Kobe), and Bryce on the perimeter. Much better matchup for that lineup

Was at the game and I liked the overall team performance. Couple good thoughts and couple bad. Needed to end it in regulation. Couldn't let it get to OT. -I'm very very interested in why verge was benched the entire second half. I didn't think he was playing that bad but his leash must be very short. -Bryce, Walker, and CJ all played tough. -didn't like the shot to end regulation at all. -Lat, well, I've talked about him a lot. Good dive to the cup for the dunk but after that it was a disasterclass. Bricked two FTs that likely cost them the game. -Andre is one of the players i try to key in on while he's in, and today was probably the cleanest game he's played in a while. Only had one moving screen turnover and a few VERY patient layups. Overall, I was impressed, but they needed to close, so it doesn't matter. MSU's guard play is shaky, so if verge can take advantage of that with the overall team play today I'll be happy. The faster Trey can get back, the better.

Considering finals are over, I get it. Plus, he probably has someone who knows his knee from his meniscus tear last year.

That's a re-tear of the meniscus I think?

I'm extremely harsh on lat 90% of the time. He's hit his shots today and is moving the ball. -

Forcing turnovers AND finishing off those is helping a lot. Against k state I believe we forced double digit turnovers and didn't have a single point of those at halftime. K state had 22 points off turnovers in contrast -

Assuming they can pull away (never an assumption with this team) need to get Keon some looks at the 4. Get him to get a 3 to fall finally so confidence can be built going into the new year. ESPECIALLY with Lats minutes decreasing every game it seems. Having options between him and CJ will help a lot.
