Nebraska (5-4) vs. Kansas (8-1) Game Thread
huskerbaseball13 replied to Bugeaters1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
KU is obviously very good. Way out of our league. But we should not be down 20 to them at the half. Nor should we be giving up over 50 points in a half. Another lackluster display early. -
I want to believe this. But unless there are some changes on the offensive end I'm afraid we are stuck in the mud. I was really hoping Coach Lewis would breath some life into the program on that end but I really don't see any difference from this year to years past in what we are trying to do.

Yeah I think we can all agree Doc's record was certainly inflated by some weak non-con scheduling. Doc's non con scheduling never really put us in great positioning had we made it to the bubble. I'd much rather schedule like we did this year even if it means going 8-4 most years compared to 10-2. Per Kenpom Doc(Overall/Non Con) 2007- 71; 147 2008- 62; 323 2009- 58; 286 2010- 49; 297 2011- 68; 326 2012- 16; 222 Tim Miles(Overall/Non Con) 2013- 6; 109 2014- 68; 110 2015- 50; 221 2016- 71; 257 2017- 23; 23(to date)

I think the school of thought is anything less than 4 years and other programs will use it to negatively recruit against you. If we have another poor year Miles is either getting fired or getting that one year extension IMO. Thats why Eichorst not extending his contract this summer was a little confusing. Hopefully we take care of business in Big Ten play and won't have to worry about it.
-
If next year actually is the make or break year....does Eichorst extend his contract by one year this summer?
-
At some point this staff is going to have to concede that they may have to give up some on defense to get young guys minutes and or offense on the court. It's probably doubtful Horne is the answer to our prayers but to this point its clear even playing good defense we are going to struggle to win against good Big Ten teams. We need a little help on the offensive end. With that said, I think we will see Horne's minutes increase from here on out.

JMO, but the pulse around Husker Nation seems to be on the fence about Miles at this point. I really have not seen much about firing him, but more so questioning if he is going to get it done here. I think the question/fire talk really revolves around him not getting that contract extension in the offseason. And it's not just some fans talking about it, the media is starting to pick up on it as well. OWH just posted a piece questioning if Miles gets a sixth season. If he does not work out or gets fired it's not going to be because he was 0-5 or 0-6 against Creighton or whatever. It would be great to beat them, but what takes place in the Big Ten is what will be most important most years. BTW, I don't think the above is accurate about Patton. Nor do I think Creighton took a chance with Thomas.

I had us at 8-4 in the non-con so we will likely only be a game off from where I saw us at. Our record doesn't surprise me. But, what's frustrating is how we continue to struggle on the offensive end. Five years running and we have been bad to mediocre on that end of the court. And, I don't know if we have the pieces to the puzzle to correct it this year or even next year. That, and Miles continues to get his teeth kicked in by Creighton...at home nonetheless.

You may be right...and I'm not saying the answer is to get rid of Miles either. But, if I'm Coach Miles I'm not feeling great about my future here at Nebraska. Eichorst didn't fail to extend his contract over the offseason just because. Remember, Eichorst did not hire Miles. If Eichorst wants his own guy in here after five years I don't think its going to really surprise anybody. I don't know what was said behind closed doors in regards to the contract extension...and even with another poor year Miles may get that extension back, but I don't think it's a slam dunk he's still around this time next year. -
Courtesy of T-Rank, our offensive numbers are listed below. Fix the below or we will continue to hover around the .500 mark and be a bottom of the barrel Big 10 team. Horne I'm guessing is sitting on the bench because Coach Mo and Miles do not trust him on the defensive end as of yet.....he may not be the answer but he came in with the pedigree of being able to shoot the ball. Play him. 2013(National Rank)(Big Ten Rank) eFG%-(297)(11) 3pt%-(304)(9) 2pt%-(273)(11) 2014(National Rank)(Big Ten Rank) eFG%-(226)(8) 3pt%-(212)(7) 2pt%-(218)(7) 2015(National Rank)(Big Ten Rank) eFG%-(288)(13) 3pt%-(341)(14) 2pt%-(156)(6) 2016(National Rank)(Big Ten Rank) eFG%-(147)(8) 3pt%-(166)(10) 2pt%-(140)(7) 2017(National Rank)(Big Ten Rank) eFG%-(314)(No Conference games) 3pt%-(326)(No Conference games) 2pt%-(275)(No Conference games)

I guess we could expect the Husker fan base to be special and about the only fan base that would do the above...but that's probably not realistic. The crowd was into it when things were interesting but when you are watching a team give up easy layups and breaking rims, almost every fan base is going to quiet down some. The fans aren't the issue, quite frankly this team has/is been tough to watch the past couple seasons and it doesn't help that they struggle to win at home. It just hasn't been good basketball.

Five years in Miles still believes "we just have to play our game." Five years later he's 0-5 against them. Assuming he's still around next year, maybe just maybe he tweaks the game plan? Probablt not. -

Well yeah, it's been a struggle for 15 years. That's why I don't believe it's changing any time soon. Unfortunately we will be talking about the same thing next year. It's clear Miles believes defense is going to get this program to the next level but at some point you have to put the ball in the hole. -

Hope you're right but at this point it's wishful thinking. We are a piss poor offensive team and unless Roby or Gill grows up in a hurry we will be fortunate to finish above .500. You can forget about the Creighton game....we have issues that im not sure can be solved this year. -

McDermott has a fun/successful identity. We are still trying to figure that out 5 years end with no end in sight. Looking like another year where we are bottom tier in terms of shooting the three ball. Would have been nice if Miles would have learned from two years ago -

And the defensive wizard Coach Mo not much better. Same story different year...can't shoot, give up far too many open looks. -

Let me guess how this goes after the....Miles apologizes. Cracks a few jokes about his record against McDermott. We go on to win 13 games this year. Rinse. Repeat. Rinse. Repeat. -

Year five and our offense looks like this? Yikes..... -
Surely...he was joking....right?

The company I work for hands out Creighton tickets like candy. I must be an asshole because if I ever attend I am wearing Husker attire. I'm never really feeling out of place though because as you walk out the door you start to notice quite a few people putting their Husker jackets on.
