Before today, Tim Miles had been adding some "incredible moral victories" to the Tournament resume... Now, Nebraska has almost completed the nonconference portion of their schedule and they have a losing record. They just lost to a 5-loss Gardner-Webb team at home. There is a very real chance that this team could finish the season with their 3rd consecutive sub-.500 record. This was Gardner-Webb. At home. People can't hide behind the SOS excuses and the moral victories on this one. It is laughable to me that anyone could watch that game today and still try to make the argument that this is a well-coached basketball team. Perhaps even worse is that very bad losses like this have become an annual occurrence for this program under Tim Miles. And it was an absolutely ridiculous move for Tim Miles to take Glynn Watson out of the starting lineup. But yeah, it's probably "B.S." to question the direction/progress of this program right now...

Gardner Webb (6-5) vs. Nebraska (5-5) Game Thread

Possibly the most ridiculous decision from Miles yet this season was taking Glynn Watson out of the starting lineup. The only legitimate excuse would be if it was an off court issue, but considering the 2nd half of the KU game, I wouldn't expect that to be the case. -
Gardner Webb (6-5) vs. Nebraska (5-5) Game Thread

Wow. Only 30 points and a 2 point lead at halftime vs Gardner-Webb... -
I just want to clarify that I personally am not saying "fire Tim Miles". My only point was that if Nebraska has a 3rd consecutive sub-.500 season, then Nebraska shouldn't feel like they have to keep Miles simply because they have no option because "who else can we get?". I think this job is more attractive than it has been for a long time. Maybe ever. I think that is a defeatist attitude that may have been accurate in the past, but this athletic department has invested enough into the program over the last few years, that Nebraska has enough positive aspects now that they should be able to attract a quality coach. Also, i don't think Nebraska "has to wait until this sophomore class graduates", because I think the talent in that class would actually help make this job more attractive to a prospective coach.

My point wasn't to say that Nebraska's options have to be those 4 specific coaches. I was just throwing a few names out that I think Nebraska could legitimately get, if they were willing to pay for them. And I will disagree about Nebraska not being able to compete for Altman or Marshall. Now that Nebraska will be a full member of the Big Ten...it won't be an issue of whether or not Nebraska is able to pay. It will be an issue of whether they are willing to pay. My point is simply that Nebraska doesn't have to feel trapped because they don't think they can get any other good coaches. I think there are a lot of good coaches out there that Nebraska could get. I think this is another one of the many options that Nebraska could have a realistic chance of landing (No evidence. Pure speculation.): Bino Ranson - Maryland (Assistant) http://www.umterps.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=207324750

Ok. Well, since I do not believe that we are at a point that Eichorst or anyone else in the athletic department would be having conversations with other coaches, that would also mean that I do not believe there is any "concrete evidence" that these coaches would come to Nebraska. And since I do not believe the conversations have started yet, that would mean any discussion on the topic would be "pure speculation". This is a message board. There is "pure speculation" all over. I wasn't implying "there is some evidence suggesting a reason other than pure speculation that they would accept a position at Nebraska". I was addressing the notion of "Nebraska can't fire Miles, because...who else can they get?" I was pointing out that there are numerous factors that make Nebrasketball's current situation very different than it has been for any of the last couple of coaching searches. I guess that I'm not aware "concrete evidence" that Marshall, Altman, etc... were offered the position during the last coaching search, but chose to turn it down. But even if that was in fact the case... There are multiple improvements throughout the entire basketball program from that time. The obvious upgrades of Arena, area directly surrounding the arena, practice facilities, increased financial resources, Big Ten conference affiliation, etc. But another glaring difference is current roster talent, compared to what it was the last coaching search. Look at Nebraska's current roster. 5-6 former Rivals150 players that are primarily in the freshman and sophomore class. And all of them will be back for at least 1-2 more seasons (if they don't transfer). There is enough talent on this roster that a coach can come in and win right away. That was not the case last time. Compare that to what a prospective coach would have seen if they would have looked at the roster during the last coaching search. Remember that Nebraska's roster was so bad that Tim Miles had to have student tryouts, because there were not even enough scholarship players to fill the roster. That is an incredible difference. And as far as "Osborne almost tripled the NUBB coaching compensation with his hire and was prepared to do even more for the right guy (Marshall, Altman, Boyle). That was a pretty large fiscal leap of faith, what more did you want from him?" I guess I don't judge the level of coaching compensation by using the benchmark of what has been paid in the past by a Nebraska program that up to that point had made minimal commitment/investment prior to that. I would judge it based on the current market and what other programs are paying that are at a level that Nebraska wants to be at. As far as "concrete evidence" concerning this topic, all that I think we have is that Miles led Nebraska to 2 consecutive sub-.500 seasons, and then his boss elected not to extend his contract. Now, there is a legitimate chance that Nebraska might only win 7 nonconference games and end up with a 3rd consecutive sub-.500 season, or very close to it. I guess we can all decide for ourselves what the implications of that evidence is/will be. But until Eichorst does/or says anything himself, I guess all we have is "pure speculation."

Well, obviously I don't have "concrete evidence" that Nebraska could get any of these guys. As far as Nebraska going after Greg Marshall last time...This is a very different situation than last time. Literally every single example I listed in the post that you referenced happened after Nebraska's last coaching search. Also, I would keep in mind, that what I would consider "opening up the checkbook" is probably very different than what Osborne probably would have offered anyone during the last coaching search.

I would say the talent currently on Nebraska's roster (5-6 former Rivals150 players), plus a legitimate big man (Tshimanga) that will be here for 3 more seasons, in addition to being in the Big Ten conference where prestige, national attention, big name matchups, and financial resources are second to none...makes this job attractive enough to get a proven coach. Nebraska also has an arena and practice facilities that are on par with the top schools in the country. And Pinnacle Bank arena is located in a vibrant, revamped part of the city, which is much different than an out of date Devaney building that was dropped down in the middle of a field away from any sort of exciting activities. I mean can you imagine trying to recruit high school kids to Devaney? All of these things make the Nebraska coaching job exponentially more attractive than it has ever been throughout my lifetime at least. So I don't think it's accurate to say "Nebraska has to keep Miles, because...who else are they going to get?" I think the amount of young talent on this roster makes this job much more attractive to a prospective coach than it would be 2 seasons from now, once the core of the Rivals150 players have graduated and moved on. Right now, the cupboard isn't bare and there is enough talent here that a good coach can come win right away. Also, Nebraska isn't in a situation where they need to worry about coaches thinking Miles was run out of town unfairly. If this season plays out like it looks like it could, then that will mean that Miles has led Nebraska to 3 consecutive sub-.500 seasons in years 3, 4, and 5 of his time here. I think any reasonable fan/coach would be able to see that 3 consecutive losing seasons isn't getting the job done. Regardless of circumstances. We're not talking about missing the NCAA Tournament 3 consecutive seasons. We're talking about sub-.500 record for 3 consecutive seasons. That's not a case of unrealistic expectations. There is enough commitment and investment in this program now and there is even more financial resources since Nebraska will be receiving a full piece of their Big Ten pie starting in 2017. Nebraska can afford to pay top dollar to bring a proven coach in. I'm obviously not suggesting anything ridiculous like Nebraska can bring someone like Izzo, Self, or Roy Williams. But Nebraska can afford to bring in a proven coach. Here are just a few examples of proven coaches that Nebraska could get, if they are willing to open the checkbook and pay what they can afford to pay: Gregg Marshall - Wichita State Archie Miller - Dayton Dana Altman - Oregon Scott Drew - Baylor

Can you show me a fan base that supports their basketball program as well as this fan base does, while being as unwatchable as Nebraska has been since Nee left? Can you show me a program that sells out their arena like Nebraska fans, while having multiple consecutive sub-.500 seasons? Can you show me another fan base of a program that rarely makes it to the NCAA Tournament bubble, even more rarely actually makes it into the NCAA Tournament, and has literally never won an NCAA Tournament game, but still has even close to the level of support that Nebrasketball fans have for the program? The problem is not the fans. The problem is a coaching staff that cannot seem to coach anything that resembles a legitimate college level offense. Fans respond to production on the court. That's the way it is.

OK, AWIII is gone. Let's guess where he ends up.
Nebrasketballer replied to jimmykc's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Seems like most objective people can see that this whole circus is more of an AW3 / his dad issue, rather than a Tim Miles / Nebrasketball issue. I don't have any "inside sources" with any agendas telling me that, so take it for what it's worth. It has been suggested that AW3 left because he was tired of the Tim Miles act. That's looking to be a little far-fetched at this point. I think it's pretty obvious that a lot of people (including Miles) are just getting a little tired of the AW3 act (and maybe more specifically his dad's act). -

2018 SG Aguek Arop -> San Diego St
Nebrasketballer replied to uneblinstu's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
My question is outside of Bruce Chubbick Sr and certain media, are the people directly involved with this truly upset/angered at Miles for this or more just disappointed? Is Arop himself pissed off at Miles or is he more upset/disappointed with the circumstances? They're pissed. Really pissed. The Omaha AAU community is pissed, Chubick and HS coaches are pissed and the Sudanese community is really pissed. How often do you think Chauncy Billips goes on local talk shows? As Benning said yesterday (and his kid is in the AAU scene, so he would know), "Miles may never recover (in terms of recruiting) from the Omaha metro over this." Chubick, who obviously has long ties to the Nebraska program, said all "bridges have been burned" as far as he is concerned.Since you are referencing Sharp and Benning, did you continue to listen to 1620 when Bahe came on? Bahe said that the people that he trusts to evaluate talent that have seen Arop play all say that Arop is clearly not a Power 5 / Big Ten player. Miles / Nebraska can't take a kid that is "clearly not a Power 5 / Big Ten player". Regardless of how many petty, local "bridges have been burned". -

Pissed off an entire city which may produce a legit P5 talent once a decade. I think at this point Miles realizes he has to make it without Omaha or not make it at all. Arop wasn't some program changer that was going to carry us over the top. I'm not sure Miles cares or can afford to care that he pissed off the Omaha bball scene. His staffs recruiting has made major headway in other much more talent rich cities such as Chicago. A perceived bad PR move in Bluejayland isn't going to lose him the job, but not winning will. Bottom line, Arop being on the squad next year wasn't going to help him win but another stud recruit may. This ^ if miles pissed of the Chicago Hoops community or destroyed in roads with the Kansas City community I would be worried, but if he pisses of a few coaches and aau people oh well, the prospects that will get us to the NCAA reside in Chicago, Kansas City, and other areas in the Midwest This x 100
