Huskers Conclude Challenging Opening Weekend with Temple

The Nebraska women's basketball team wraps up its season-opening weekend by taking on traditional Atlantic 10 Conference power Temple on Sunday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Nebraska will honor all members past and present of the armed serves on Military Appreciation Day at the Devaney Center. All current and former military members with valid military identification will receive free general admission seating to the game. As part of the day-night doubleheader at the Devaney Center, anyone with a men's basketball ticket for the Southern game will receive free general admission seating to the women's game.

Temple travels to Lincoln for the first time to take on Nebraska on Sunday afternoon at the Devaney Center. The Owls bring a 1-0 record to the Devaney Center after opening the year with a 55-41 victory over perennial Big Sky Conference power Montana at McGonigle Hall in Philadelphia on Friday night.

Temple beat Montana despite hitting just 35.4 percent (17-48) of its shots from the field. The Owls did connect on 4-of-9 threes and hit 17-of-25 free throws. They held the Lady Griz to a chilly 26.3 percent (15-57) from the field, including a frigid 17.4 percent (4-23) from long range. Montana hit just 7-of-13 free throws and was dominated on the glass, 48-31. Temple's young backcourt did lose the turnover battle, 19-14, to the Lady Griz.

Nebraska and Temple have squared off just once in school history. The Owls escaped from the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament with a 64-61 victory.

Huskers go to 2 -0 with a 64-39 victory over Temple.

The Huskers looked twice as good as they did last Friday against Carolina A&T. The Huskers played like a top 10 defense today! They made it very hard for the Owls to get into any kind of offense practically the whole game. Great job out of Hooper, Cady and Sample crashing the boards.

Hooper lead the Huskers with 12 points and 14 boards. Brandi Jeffery had 13 points and Zeros had 10.

We need Hooper and Cady to start knocking more of their shots down. If we can get those two hot the sky's the limit for this team. Sadie Murren was again impressive off the bench. Rachel Theriot was also, but she needs to speed her game up a knotch. She has got great floor awareness when she's out there. Thought Hallie Sample looked good also for the amount of time she was out there, especially going after rebounds. I also really liked how Lindsey drove into the lane and attacked the basket.

Total attendance for this one was 3981.

This was a nice win but we are not going to win a lot of games shooting 23-71 (32%), 3 pt. 7-29 (24%) and 11-19 (57%). Good thing our defense played great. Defense is one thing you shouldn't have off nights like you can on offense. Hallie Sample has really stepped up her game.

I echo the praise of the defense. It was absolutely stifling the first half; perhaps as good as I have seen it--which is surprising this early in the year. Everyone seems to get Yori's system. Another area we look good in is rebounding. A pleasant surprise. Shooting--well, we have a long way to go there. Hopefully just a slump. Sample was outstanding today in her minutes. Hopefully her health will hold. Finally, 00 has a whole bunch of game. One tough player.
