Tip-off between the Big Red and the Vaqueros is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. Nebraska’s game with the Vaqueros will mark the first regular-season appearance on the Husker sideline for Coach Amy Williams. The former Husker (Amy Gusso, 1995-98) led South Dakota to 32 victories and a Postseason WNIT Championship last season. Williams was a two-time Summit League Coach of the Year at South Dakota, while leading the Coyotes to the conference tournament title game in each of her four seasons in Vermillion. Jessica Shepard, a 6-4 sophomore forward from Fremont, Neb., who earned first-team All-Big Ten honors a year ago, returns to lead an experienced front court. The 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Shepard averaged team highs of 18.5 points and 8.6 rebounds in 2015-16. She also claimed Preseason All-Big Ten honors heading into 2016-17.Shepard produced 30 points and 13 rebounds in Nebraska’s exhibition win over Southwest Baptist on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Senior Allie Havers, a 6-5 senior center from Mattawan, Mich., who averaged 8.3 points and 6.6 rebounds in her first season as a starter in 2015-16, pitched in 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting against the Southern Baptist. Coach Larry Tidwell and the Vaqueros return four starters from a team that went 19-14 overall last season, including 9-5 in the WAC on their way to a conference runner-up finish. Leading the returning players for UTRGV is 2016 WAC Player of the Year Shanté Goff. The 5-8 senior guard averaged 15.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last season. She knocked down a team-high 67 three-pointers but hit just 28.8 percent of her long-range attempts. Bernesha Peters averaged 7.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists while making 30 starts as a freshman a year ago. Peters was even better in WAC play, averaging 10.5 points per game. The Vaqueros also have size and experience up front with 6-0 senior forward Mary Savoy and 6-2 junior forward Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir. Savoy averaged a double-double with 11.7 points and 10.5 rebounds per game a year ago, while Kjartansdóttir pitched in 8.6 points and 7.5 boards to give the Vaqueros one of the most formidable front lines in the WAC. UTRGV must replace the contributions of Rickell Preston, a 5-10 guard who averaged 8.6 points and 6.5 rebounds in 33 starts as a senior captain in 2015-16. Rickell also led UTRGV with 62 steals. The Vaqueros must also replace the production of Anushka Maldonado, a 6-1 forward who averaged 9.9 points and 6.1 boards last season. However, Coach Tidwell and the Vaqueros have plenty of options for more production with a 19-player roster that includes 11 returning letterwinners. Tidwell, who owns a 52-45 record in three seasons at UTRGV, led the Vaqueros to the first round of the Postseason WNIT in 2016. As a team, UTRGV averaged 62.9 points per game last season, while surrendering 61.6 points per contest. The Vaqueros were not a highly efficient team, as they hit just 35 percent of their field goal attempts, including just 26.9 percent of their three-pointers. They were solid at the free throw line though, connecting on 72.3 percent of their attempts. UTRGV carried a minus-0.4 rebound margin last season but a plus-2.4 team turnover margin. • Nebraska is 40-2 all-time in regular-season home openers with its last loss coming to South Dakota State (68-49) on Nov. 19, 2005. • One of Coach Amy Williams’ primary objectives early in the season will be to find a starting five from a relatively inexperienced group of Huskers. Only six players on Nebraska’s roster have ever started a game for the Huskers • Although Jessica Shepard is just a sophomore, she is Nebraska’s returning leader with 29 career starts in 31 games as a freshman. • A three-year contributor on the court, 6-5 senior Allie Havers adds 21 career starts to Nebraska’s level of experience to begin 2016-17. • Nebraska is 3-0 in home openers since moving into Pinnacle Bank Arena for the start of the 2013-14 season. • The Huskers have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 251 straight regular-season games dating back to a loss at UTEP on Dec. 20, 2008. • Nebraska has hit at least two three-pointers in 130 consecutive games. • Nebraska set a season ticket sales record with 4,032 season tickets sold as of Jan. 31, 2016. It marked the first time in school history the Huskers sold 4,000 season tickets. Nebraska’s season ticket number for 2016-17 was 3,947 as of Nov. 1, 2016. GAME NOTES:

  6. Arieal Scott the 3 star guard from Urbana Ill whom the Huskers offered a year ago committed to Duke on her visit this past weekend.
  7. She had the surgery on Oct 4th. We could sure use a healthy Burns this season that's for sure! Looked like she was moving around fairly well in pregame shagging balls under the bucket for only being a few weeks out of surgery yesterday.

Richardson was joined up front in all 29 contests a year ago by Campbell, Neb., native Mackenzie Skupa. The 6-2 senior from Silver Lake High School averaged 6.8 points and 3.9 boards per game as a junior. Alex Botkin, a 5-7 senior guard averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 boards as a junior for the Bearcats. 9. Husker fans are going to have to be patient as it may take a while it looks like. We have a long ways to go, looked pretty sloppy. Got out hustled quite a bit of the time. Need to shore that up soon. Need to figure out when the opponent over plays the passing lanes not to make that pass. Lots of passes that went straight to the other team as result of this. Need to find a point guard. Loved the fact the Huskers mixed up the defenses from a man to a 2-3 zone. Allie Havers actually had a great shooting afternoon but they had her playing at the top of the key all through out the game. Give Nicea Eliely a little time and this kid is going to be a dynamite player for the Huskers. Really impressed with how she played for it being her first game on both ends of the court. Maddie Simon only played sparingly as did Darrian Washington. Maddies play on the defensive end is what's keeping her on the bench for periods of time. Darrian just needs some playing experience. Jessica Shepard looks as if she picked up right where she left off from last season. She' going to face a double team every game the Huskers play from here on. Riley Jensen, Hannah Whitish and Grace Mitchell looked like what freshmen look like for their first game on the court. Give these girls a little more experience and they'll start coming around, although Jensen did show some good play at times. • Maybe 2500 fans in the stands. • Game ball goes to Nicea! You guys who didn't get to see the game are going to like how this kid plays! She's only going to get better! • Oh the first time in 15 years our head coach walked the sidelines in a dress!
  10. I think I'm just as interested in seeing her first coaching job on the sideline as I'm watching what these new freshmen are going to bring to the table!
  11. Southern Baptist U comes to Lincoln with an exhibition win under their belt. They beat a team called "Livin the Dream" last Tuesday night 79-65. Megan Rosenbohm led the SBU Bearcats with a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Caylee Richardson was also in double figures with 16 points in the victory. The game was close throughout until the last few minutes when SBU went on a 11-1 run to end the game.
  12. Since this is somewhat of a "who ain't getting to play this year" thread I'll put this here. Michigan St has dismissed Morgan Green a junior point guard who started 17 games last year for the Spartans. In the article MSU head coach Suzy Merchant said “Morgan Green could not live up to the expectations necessary to be a part of the Spartan basketball program, despite multiple opportunities," http://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/sports/college/msu/womens-basketball/2016/11/04/morgan-green-dismissed-msu-womens-hoops-program/93312226/
  13. A little bit of Southern Baptist trivia. Senior Mackenzie Skupa a Class D-2 Silver Creeek High School alum and a native of Campbell, Nebraska starts for the Bearcats and is excited to get to play in PBA. She was recruited to Southern Baptist by previous Southern Baptist head coach Todd Voss who at one time coached girls high school basketball at BDS in south central Nebraska and was also the Head coach of Concordia University in Seward in the early 2000's.
  14. Champaign Ill. sharp shooter Arieal Scott has cut her list of schools from some 20 plus down to six. NU didn't make the cut. Her finalist are as of now Duke, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, UCLA, and Wisconsin. Says she plans to announce where she's going next spring. Also, Grace Berg the 2018 recruit that Nebraska was showing some interest in committed to Missouri yesterday.
