HHCC Game #14 - at Maryland (Jan. 01, 11:00 AM CST)

NU - 75 MU - 72 -
Would be great to get a W over Iowa. Huskers imo, would have a good chance to be favored in this one if it was to be played in PBA. Iowa lost to Illinois last night. Another pleasant surprise last night was that the coaches decided to defend Ashley Deary by putting Queen Eliely on her and she met the challenge. Nicea forced Deary into four turnovers and blocked two of her shots when she attempted to drive the lane and better yet stole the ball twice from the league leading steals leader. By the way Deary wound up with 0 steals in this game. Both freshmen starters had pretty good looking stat lines. Really like how Hannah is picking it up on the offensive end, she's starting to use the picks she's getting to her advantage which is allowing her to get better open looks at the bucket and allows her to get in the lane for an assist or lay up. She wound up with 4 assists, plus made some really good passes last night into Shepard for easy buckets unfortunately Jess didn't hit every shot after the pass. Another thing we out-rebounded one of the better rebounding teams in the league 42-36! But rebounding is turning out to be one of our better assets. But we still remain dismal to say the least from the charity stripe.

First up to the podium is Nicea and Jasmine. Next up is Hannah.

This might be the best the Huskers have played since last year when they beat Northwestern but it still was a loss. Should have came away with the w tonight. Connect on some of those bricks we threw up from the free throw line and it might have been a different story. Keep Hannah Whitish in the starting line-up! The kid provided the spark the Huskers needed to get the good start from the onset! I think we got to find a way to get Havers more involved in the offense. What's the story on Esther? She was in a boot on the sidelines but not sure if it was just a sprain or something worse. Hate to say it but we are the worst conditioned team we've had as a team in the past 15 years. Our bigs hurt us tonight in the 4th quarter because they couldn't keep up with competition because they we're practically spent by the time the fourth quarter rolled around. One good thing to come out of tonight's loss is that we kept our turnovers under 20.
-
I actually think this game presents us with huge match-up problems especially on the defensive end. Coffey is a scoring and rebounding machine and Deary with her ability to penetrate the lane and grab defensive steals is just uncanny. I'd like to see someone with Nicea's ability to defend, go up against both of them but that's probably not going to happen. I think you got to go with Eliely up against Inman and put Shepard on Coffey and hope she has the stamina to slow her down somewhat. Havers most likely will have to guard the big kid Hamilton which leaves either Cincore or Ramacieri to slow down Deary. Can they do it? Sure hope so. Might also be a good time to switch to a 2-3 zone periodically throughout the game. One other thing that concerns me is Northwestern's ability to get out and run, the Huskers can't afford to get beat down the court on a consistent basis.

She was at the game last night wearing a Wolfpack volleyball sweatshirt. By the time I made it down to wear she and her folks were sitting they were gone. And nobody around there knew her name. Not much out there on her, Hull is a small town in the very northwest part of Iowa. Sounds as if South Dakota St. thought that they had her. I know at one time Iowa had been looking at her also. I'll put more on the big board when I find out more. Hope she's a fearless rebounder. Pretty good crowd of 7553. Great to see Husker alums Danielle Page, Vonnie Turner and Dominique Kelly in attendance tonight!

I think the most encouraging part of the game came in the 4th quarter when the Huskers played predominately freshmen. The horde of fans that decided to leave at the end of the third quarter missed the best part of the game. Granted it was against the second team of UConn but their bench could be rated in the top 25. The four frosh of Eliely, Whitish, Mitchell and Casio-Jensen did a pretty good job playing against the Huskies. My game ball goes to Hannah Whitish it looks like she's really starting to get comfortable on both ends of the court and she's got a great looking shot that she's getting to drop for her. I like the fact she's not afraid to drive the lane and dish it off to an open teammate. The kid needs to be put into the starting line-up soon. Lot of missed bunnies the first half. Had we got some of those to fall we might of scored another dozen points. Was hoping we'd score more than 46 as that's what we put up against them last year. We only shot 4 three throws the whole game. Really good to see Noah doing his thing back behind the bucket tonight!

Need I remind them they're 30-12 and still on the losing end in this rivalry. The following is some of the reasons of why I despise creighton. Have you ever seen a Husker team gloat on social media after beating them? #inferiorcomplex

The coach can be heard tonight on Huskers Sports Nightly along with Husker Olympic Bronze medal winner Danielle Page for an hour long show starting at 8:00 pm. Should be interesting to hear the coaches perspective on the way her team is performing.

One good note to come out of games played this afternoon Drake beat Iowa 81-76.
