How will the new unions affect basketball?
BenJammin63 replied to BenJammin63's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Actually.......the Union movement was much stronger before that strike. The Railroad strike of 1877 effectively shut the nation's transportation system down. Even though it was Frick that hired the Pinkertons it was the labor union that the media and then the public blamed for the violence. Union membership plummeted after the event. It took quite a while for the union membership to recover from the Homestead strike. And if you look at statistics like wages, benefits, overall health and life-expectancy, unions are very valuable even when there isn't a monopoly. Personally I think not dying is a definite positive. Now in dealing with the Northwestern issue, the decision was only made by the regional NLRB. The university is appealing to the national NLRB and then if they lose there, you can count on the issue moving into the court system. So in reality, if this is going to have any affect at all it will be quite awhile from today. As well, the ruling doesn't even mention the NCAA, only the university and the issues the players are talking about are working conditions and health insurance to cover long-term injuries after they leave college. If things move forward I'm sure at least a stipend for the players will be involved. The players have historically received a stipend previously and the world didn't fall apart. It is just my opinion, but I see the NCAA becoming increasingly less relevant as super conferences want more control of the dollars and players demand to be allowed to join the discussion at the table. Thank you both!! But to just clarify, this hasn't had any deal with NCAA yet? It's just been with the university of northwestern? And then if this doesn't get over turned, it will go to court? Yes but first the national National Labor Relations Board. Thanks! And then let's say everything passes and nothing gets over turned and they are able to form the union, what can they do and can't do? -

Maybe I didn't make this clear.... And maybe that was sarcasm too... But since northwestern and I believe any other teams can now start unions and have more say in what happens with them, that means any NCAA team in any sport can form one. I'm not trying to get political or anything like that. I'm seriously wondering how this will affect NCAA sports and basketball in general. I'm sorry if I didn't word it right and made it sound political, but I would definitely say this affects Nebraska basketball and basketball in general. The irony is that sports oozes politics, and the number of "topics" that can be turned into political circle jerks is boundless. So the notion that you can discuss sports all the time without venturing into politics is, to me, ludicrous. But it remains the ethos of the board world that "political neutrality" be maintained. In order for that illusion to be maintained, topics like these need to be shut down or quarantined immediately unless you want to conduct a social experiment on how strong fan identity is versus political identity. For those of us who hold views very much in the minority, these kinds of threads are hostile, because we either not engage in order to allow peace to be maintained or we engage and rip the board to pieces, not to mention the relationships on it. Alright. That's understandable. I understand what you are saying. I'm not trying to make this political at all, and I understand that unions do have politics involved. But I'm not trying to get into politics and I think we can avoid politics. I was just wondering like what they can and can't do and how it would affect the game of basketball. So ya I agree, we need to avoid the politics. I'm just wondering what they can and can't do really. I'm just trying to learn some stuff here. But I do understand that this does involve politics, And that was not my intention. But like I said, I do understand where you are coming from. -

With Northwestern getting the ok to form a union, how will it affect the way college sports, particularly basketball. I didn't read the entire thing, and since I'm a young adult and know the basics of unions and not much more, how much will this affect the sport. I'm sure there are people on this board who know a lot more about this than me and I would love to get their insight, especially if this thing doesn't get over turned. I know the main thing will be players wanting to get paid, but will they be able to like try and over rule NCAA rules and just try to like make new rules or what? Like I said, I'm not the brightest tool in the shed, especially when it comes to laws or whatever you call this. So please someone enlighten me... P.S. I'm starting this to 1)Try to redeem myself after the last thread I started, which I didn't think would turn out the way it did. 2)Learn some politics and stuff like that. 3)Get a new thread going to try and move away from some of the disagreement this board has been having recently. 4)I'd like to thank Norm for the poll because thats what made me think about this topic and kind of surprised there wasn't anything made for it yet.

I'm a big rhubar (sp?) pie fan, so if that's available I'm in on the pie. But it's also hard to turn down a beer.... -
I know there has been a thread about this, but I couldn't find it/i'm to lazy to go hunting through, but feel free to move it or not, but after re-watching the game and fighting through the sadness I have a good feeling for the next two years, and I believe most people feel that way too. But IMO, we need everyone needs to get better, because I don't think anyone will be losing playing time. But this is what I'm thinking that people need to work on in the off season. Terran- Arguably the best player on the team, although I think Shavon is, but the key for him to taking the next step is to become a smarter player and keep working on his jump shot. I don't have stats and I could be off, but I think he probably led our team with most turnovers (maybe Tai did). He can score at will, but its the lack of his basketball smartness and turnovers that absolutely kill him. Sometimes he will just go down and chuck a three up right away. I say he makes about 1/4 of a time, but it can kill us. That is an empty possession that we don't work the clock and the other team can go down and score. He also needs to work on three point shots. I think his final percentage was around 33%, which isn't bad, but if he wants to be a premier player like a nik stauskas, thats what he needs to do. Shavon- He too, like Terran, can score at will. He is also one of the smartest players on the floor too. He just needs to work on becoming a leader and his outside/mid-range jump shots. Him and Terran are incredible drivers, and he could be another big time player if he could be more consistent with his jump shot. It got better towards the end, but the majority of his points are from driving and getting to the hoop. He starts making outside shots, teams will have to guard him tight out there and then he can blow by them and get to the hoop. I also think he needs to take control out there. He should demand the ball every possession. When the ball is in his hands, good things happen. Walt- short and simple, get bigger, polish post moves, and then becoming a better down low defender. A lot of times, he would get the ball, somewhat down low, then he wouldn't have a move and eventually either kick it out, or dribble it out. He also gets pushed out of the lane never establishes himself in their. Both getting better down low, offensively and defensively, will become important, especially if Jacob Hammond comes in and isn't as big of a threat as we think he will be. David- David I think is the most improved player on the team throughout the entire year. Started slow and didn't play in some games, but once he got going again, he was good. Defensively, he did fantastic. I wouldn't be surprised if he led the team in blocks. He also has a really nice mid range jump shot. He hit some buckets when we really needed one. It would be nice if he could gain some weight and help him battle down lo. He also needs to work on his post moves. Sometimes he would get the ball down low on a pass or offensive rebound and he would get stuck because he had no move to help him. Benny- he was fine defensively, and his jump shot started to come around. But he needs to become a better passer, drive the ball more, and just keep working on his jump shot. I dont have the stat about his assist but I don't think he had many per a game. Maybe averaged 1 or 2 a game. He also needs to drive the ball more i think. No guard is that quick to cut him off and he finishes great around the rim for how small he is. He just needs the confidence in himself to one, drive the ball, and then will help him with his jump shot too. Tai- whether he becomes a shooting guard or if they keep him at point guard, he just needs to find his shot. I think its freshman pains, and not being used to the pace of college ball. Just find his shot and i think he will be fine. If they keep him at point, he needs to become a better driver and a better passer. Get the assist up, and start making shots, he will be just fine. Leslee- He had an up and down season. Times he looked really good and other times, he looked alright. I also think he got zero calls throughout the entire conference season. You could tell he was getting frustrated throughout the season and games. I think all he really can do is just keep working on his inside game and maybe starting shooting shots around the elbow when he gets the ball in the high post. Make him more of a threat. Defensively, I thought he did a solid job all year. Those are my two cents, if people want to add on or disprove stuff go for it. But i'm just excited for next season!!!!!

Who's the writer/professor? Scott Winter, a UNL journalism professor. Isn't he the one not receiving tenure or something like that? I saw a bunch of english/journalist majors posting something about him.

What killed me is that Benny and craft are about the same defensively, and Benny gets called for touchy fouls and craft has nothing called on him. I know it would be like that just the way the BIG ten love craft, but still, it's frustrating to watch. -

Just get like a bed sheet and write on it. Did that for flags in high school. Usually worked pretty well. -

I wonder since a professional video group did it, maybe they haven't released the rights to Nebraska yet. Cause I think the devaney tribute was made by the university, it's theirs to share. That's about the only reason I can think of why they haven't released it yet. -

Ben remember when Cam and Morgan and you would tell the scalpers you only had 3 bucks and you guys where so young they would sell them to you for that? Worked every time until Morgan pulled out that $20 one time. Classic Morgan move. I was going to get 25 for a ticket I was selling once and the guy only wanted to pay 20. We flipped a coin and I won and he gave me a 20, and then I basically forced him to give me the other 5. Cam should remember that one. I remeber that one. Cam tried to get a hold of to go to the airport last night, but he thought you might be working because you didn't text him back right away. We do have us some fun stories don't we? Ya sadly I was working. Second time I have missed us win on the road. The first time was Michigan state. But ya, some of the best times I have had, have been in Devaney with you guys.

Since I was 10, I've been dealing with scalpers. Usually to no name teams, but damn it was a good way to get 3-5 bucks out of it and that ended up being my food money. May not be the best people, but they usually come through.

Love the video, other than the joakim Noah crap. But it's one of my favorite songs to get pumped up too. And the people who give d-rose crap about taking so long to get back from rehab have no idea what they are talking about. I'm a year and a half out of knee surgery and just about every day I'm experiencing knee pains and can still barely cut without pain. But the video is sick and would love to see Nebraska do something like that!!!!
