Matthew Atewe -> Auburn -> Washington
GoBigRed replied to TheKamdyMan's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
I think by "this changes everything" it meant he was scrambling to figure out what to do and was panicking, but now he doesn't have to have a backup plan anymore. At least I hope so. Everyone assumed we were sniffing around for another big man because we thought Atewe was going elsewhere. Maybe we were looking for another big man because our coaches didn't think he was going to become eligible? -
Logically that makes no sense. All it takes is a raise of the fist to call timeout. Doesn't take a full second to do that...
-
Could we use him? Heck yea. Could we use any player taller than 6'9" starting on any power conference team? Heck yea. Woodbury seems like a decent player. I don't think he'll have the career Aleks Maric did. He may not even put up the numbers that Diaz did. My hope is Miles will find us some guys of our own.
-
Not sure what that has to do with Gesell and Woodbury. I don't expect Parker or vucetic to be on our team either and I certainly don't want them in our rotation in a couple years. Doesn't mean we can't recruit players (I.e. Webster) to take us to the next level rather than worry about what a couple kids from Sioux city did.
-
LOL. The first two posts in this thread were the first two things that crossed my mind when I saw him score a couple early in the 1st half. He is an OK player who will probably not be much better than he is now when he is a senior. Kind of like Eliason, who is in his 3rd year at Minnesota and playing 13 minutes per game and putting up 2.2 points per game.
-
With purdue's win that is correct
-
Maybe UNO potential. Probably not Nebraska.
-
Exactly. He didn't come close to his 5th arm wave. Ballsy call to make knowing there is video evidence of his count. Funny thing was the color guy did his own count and bolted to 5 seconds completely ignoring the ref's arm motions and said "good call."
-
But I went back to watch that 5 second call on Rey in the final seconds that nearly cost us our last game in Devaney Center history. I timed it with a stopwatch multiple times and every single time from the time he receives the ball until he signals for a timeout, it is between 4.4 and 4.5 seconds. Unless the 5 second count starts when the referee lets go of the ball (which would make absolutely no sense), then it was a bad call. Only that kind of call would go against us at home in the last 10 seconds. Also, does the referee's hand count start at 1 or 2? Because he only waved his arm out 4 times and on the 4th time is when Rey called timeout simultaneously. He started his handcount as soon as Rey touched the ball. Anyway, whatever.

Got outplayed by a 6-7 kid in a loss in the semis. Shot 2-12. Probably a walk-on candidate at best.
-
Rough outing but yeah he did sprain his ankle yesterday and supposedly was gimpy on it tonight.

As the person who started this thread, I didn't intend for this to turn into a debate about small town vs. big city players. I just simply think this: if there is a basketball player in this state who is 6'7" or taller and puts up above average numbers, I hope our staff is giving every single one of them a look before they decide whether they are good or not. It sounds like they are doing so. Tim Miles isn't afraid to look around this state for talent. I have heard that he has been in attendance at some high school games in Lincoln where there are definitely no players good enough to play at NU. But he still checks it out for himself. The guy will get it done here.

6'8" junior center at Kimball...I believe I heard on the radio yesterday that Daum is currently the only junior in Nebraska with an official Division I offer (Wyoming). I think it was him. Had 24 pts, 16 rebs and 3 blocks in their opening round win over Gibbon on Thursday. "Daum is a nice player. He has such a big wingspan, it’s kind of hard to practice to get the kids ready." - Gibbon coach Kimball is C1, so again another small town kid with some size, but never seen him play so who knows if he's D1 caliber. Sounds like more of a traditional post player than Moon from O'Neill/St. Mary's.
-
If I remember Bronsen correctly, he wasn't much of a shooter though. Hustle player who got the few points he did off rebounds and dunks, if I recall correctly. Never seen Moon play so I don't know how similar they are. I suspect Bronsen was a much better athlete than this kid, but that this kid is a much better shooter. Hopefully he's interested in walking on.
-
Probably, but 6-8 three-point shooters (he played shooting guard last year which means he can also ball handle) don't come around these parts very often. They don't come around anywhere very often. If he has a big summer on an AAU team...you never know.
-
Khyri Thomas, Omaha Benson, 6-4, guard-forward, Jr.: Part of a tall lineup for the Bunnies, he’s one of the top players in the junior class.

Never seen anything like this before.

Again, storming the court last night was not about beating flipping Minnesota. It was about 37 years of history going bye bye. -
Man if we could beat Iowa on Saturday...
GoBigRed replied to GoBigRed's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Probably nothing, because this board would have probably been overrun by an insane amount of new fans and would have exceeded the bandwith, causing the site to collapse. -
I'll throw this kid's name onto the board. Just heard about him in the paper this morning and on the radio. Adam Moon, O’Neill St. Mary’s (Class D1), 6-8, Jr., 23.4 ppg., 11.7 reb. Plays at 2:00 Thursday at North Star. Possibly at 7:00 Friday at Pershing if they win (which they are favored to). Anyone seen him play? Coordinated much or just a product of being really tall against weak competition? Looks skinny in this pic (and is he bringing the ball up the court??). Very strong outshide shooter apparently but needs work on his low post game according to this article. No DI offers yet but visited Nebraska, and has interest from UNO and North Dakota. Says he "hopes to get recruited by Nebraska." http://www.omaha.com/article/20130306/PREPZONE/703069831/1216#class-d-1-moon-shines-in-many-ways-for-st-mary-s

6-12...are you kidding me? Not only that, but 6-7 to end the conference season...this season would have to be considered a gigantic success. Shoot, it's already a big success in my book, but I can't find the thread to resurrect from earlier this season, but I'm pretty sure 4 was the mark that most would have considered a good season. Hard to believe we've won more games than last year's team.

Anyone complaining about the court storming doesn't have a clue. Period. -
What happened to next year's senior class?
GoBigRed replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
That class probably has the biggest negative ratio between hype and productivity of any recruiting class we've ever had. It might, in fact, rival the '11 class for lowest aggregate career productivity in terms of minutes played, starts and points. Someone want to try to add the numbers up? In that class's first year on campus (2005-06), Marks, BJ Walker, Marcus Walker and Jamel White all played. They combined for 16.8 mpg, 32 starts and 5.3 ppg. These numbers are similar to what Andre Almeida, Caleb Walker and Kamyron Brown combined for in two years (17.3 mpg, 49 starts, 5.3 ppg). If you take it a step further by evaluating the entire careers of those 6 from 2005, their numbers drop to: 11.7 mpg, 71 starts, 4.0 ppg. The problem with that 05 class wasn't that they didn't have ability. It was actually one of Doc's better groups. He just didn't manage it very well. The best player (Jamel) was kicked off the team midway through his sophomore year, the second best player (Marcus) left after his first year, the third best player (BJ) transfered/was dismissed after one year and the fourth best player (Chris) had injuries that killed his career, even though he was the only one of the 6 who made it to his senior year. Marks wasn't good and Smith was worse, but in a class of 6 recruits if you have 4 that can play you've done ok. Unfortunately for us they were the only 2 that didn't get in trouble/get hurt. That class killed us because the top 3 producers couldn't even last 2 seasons here. Looking back now, it's not hard to see why our program has been such a dump. Hard to consistently win games when your top recruits end up leaving. -
I may be in the minority here, but this was expected for me. I wasn't surprised in the least. We're human, cwg, and we aren't good. They battled their hearts out and got an emotional win at home on Saturday with the 5 starters playing all 20 minutes of the second half. For a team like us, it takes everything we have just to get a single win. They flew to Wisconsin on Monday, practiced Monday night, and got right back to playing today. Meanwhile, Wisconsin hasn't played since last Wednesday, almost a full week off. And they just killed Ohio State too. Sorry to sound abrasive, but to expect anything even average from our guys tonight was probably a stretch. We are tired, we have no depth, and we ran into a team that started, what, 7 of 9 from long range? We were in it until they drained a bunch of 3s on us. Of course we knew we were out of it by then. I don't think for a second that our guys "didn't show up" or "didn't want to play"...we had a lead early on and had our spirit crushed when they couldn't miss. It happens when you have no depth. Onward and upward.

Maybe all-around they don't have the best talent they've ever had, but McDermott is the most decorated player they've ever had and Gibbs and Echinique are no slouches. But the expectations from their fanbase this year were greater than any other year and they believe they have the team to achieve those expectations. Don't think they ever believed the Korver teams could go to the final 4, but some of their fans stated coming into this year that this team could make that type of run. That's looking less and less likely by the game but we'll see. They live and die by the 3 so maybe they will live with it in March.
