uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 9, Ed 13 - @ Indiana
uneblinstu replied to uneblinstu's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Just goes back to @Norm Peterson's point in the other thread. Don't make too much out of any single game one way or the other. I think if we see them continue to play decent defense, push more on offense, use Roby when we see a zone, see the bulk of our 3's coming from Horne, Tai and Watson and stay healthy, you'll see more games like this than we saw vs. Gardner-Webb. The evidence over the course of the year actually supports that, too. -

Oh, sure, there's no reason to watch the whole thing. I've seen a lot worse (even from NU has 'em). Thought that was an interesting observation at the beginning. -

Indiana centric post game, but the observation about 8:00 in about the role non-conference play may or may not have factored into this game was interesting. -
Will be curious to see how these shift in about 3-4 games.

It's the latest trend these days. Seeing all throughout basketball. You'd see some NU players doing it, too, but they wear the leggings which masks it some. At least one of the walk-ons is all in on this trend. -

Well, let's take a little closer look at that. coming into the game, NU was shooting .293 on the season. That's bad. Really, really bad. Seven Huskers have attempted a 3: Webster, Watson, Horne, Gill, McVeigh, Roby and Jacobson. Yesterday, that final quartet, 30/121 on the season, attempted just one. If those were all of NU's attempts from 3, it would easily be worst in the NCAA. The trio of Webster, Watson and Horne is hitting .379 beyond the arc and went 9/17 from 3. It's better than their season averages, for sure, but if those 3 were where all our season attempts came from, they'd be a top 70 team. We'll steadily move up the ranks if those 3 are where the bulk of our attempts come from. And, FTR, I think McVeigh and Roby are capable shooters. -

Pump, drive, dunk. We'll see that one, too. -
That was fun! - What to say! They just went out and took it to the Hoosiers. They withstood the IU run to end the first half and responded. There's a lot of really great things to take from this. - I think we've found our 8 man rotation. - Zero minutes from McVeigh. We'll see him again, I think, but he's gonna have to earn it when he gets his chances. - The freshmen looked like Big Ten players and under the Big Ten lights they didn't buckle. - Ed is a man. I was worried when he fouled out, but dang, he is tough to handle. - I was suprised they went with the 3 guard lineup to start. But clearly coach thinks that's the best 5 to start games. It was telling Roby was on the floor in crunch time and not Jordy when Ed went out. - So, I think Horne's earned some more minutes, huh? - Watson went straight cold-blooded killer down the stretch. - The Watson and Webster tandem is going to be one of the better back courts in the conference. I'm not the first to say that, but you're probably gonna get 35-40 a night from that duo. That's a solid base to build off of. - Though Jacobson did a lot of dirty work tonight that people aren't going to see in the box score. Would be great if he could get a little more going in the scoring column, though. - I don't know what switch was flipped at halftime, but they handled that zone 10 times better in the 2nd half than they did in the 1st. Roby, particularly made quick decisions and found open shooters. Tonight they hit some of those shots. He also missed some opportunities to get to the rim. When he learns to do that, he's gonna be a real handful. - If outworking teams becomes the MO of this team, they're going to have a nice conference run. If they can combine that with the talent they've got on the floor more often, like they did today, the future suddenly becomes very, very bright. - They have 3 games I think they'd really like to have back: Clemson, Virginia Tech and, of course, Gardner-Webb. They canceled out one of them tonight. - The real test will be how they build off this win. Do they play well vs. Maryland? What about when they come home vs. Iowa and Northwestern? This game will increase in value if do. Three years ago, they rode the wave of the win in MSU to the dance. This team is more talented than that one, but not sure if they're ready to do that yet. Last year, they didn't really capitalize on the win at Mich. St. Hopefully they do this time. - This is the first time since joining the Big Ten that NU has opened conference play with a win. Kinda nice for a change. - I thought the difficult non-conference schedule came into play tonight. You could tell the guys weren't afraid of Assembly Hall. They'd gone into Allen Fieldhouse and held their own for much of that game and KU is better than IU. They'd taken #2 and undefeated UCLA to the wire. They're better than the Hoosiers, too. I'm guessing it'll be a fairly sleepy atmosphere in Maryland on Sunday. Hopefully the Huskers will be wide awake and can sneak one out of there, too.

If you're interested in my thoughts, which I wouldn't blame you if you aren't, I updated the top post. -

You mean, get him to a prep school for a year?
-
I'm obviously all-in on Wingett. I think he's a player you could redshirt for a year and maybe he doesn't play much for his freshman year either, but you get him in that nutrition and strength program and I think you'll see a kid that will be a real gem. If he's gotten all the off the court stuff in order, I think NU should be in on this kid. Not like they don't have the space on the roster.
-
That is true. I may not have posted it on the board, and I don't really care enough to go look it up.
-
I also believe I was on record saying Khiry Thomas could play at NU. I'm not gonna go dig it up, but I distinctly remember being really impressed with him at the state tournament. I've also been the leader of the "get David Wingett to Lincoln" campaign.
-
Well, I'd still contend that if the B1G is as murky as a lot of people say, and Nebraska is somewhere in the middle of that, it's exceptionally difficult to project where they end up. I think the range is closer to 11 to 4.
-
If this is true, and Nebraska is included in that number, then they could absolutely do better than 7 wins.
-
Seriously though, I think Gill's played better of late.
-
This. Did I do that right?
-
It's gonna come down to whether or not they can find three wins on the road. That's going to be a huge challenge. Rutgers, Northwestern and Minnesota are the best chance there. Maryland might be a game you could sneak out a win.

uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 9, Ed 12 - Southern
uneblinstu replied to uneblinstu's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Not sure, but based on the way he started the year, Jack was a reasonable play. I think it was ok to let him try and work himself out of it. He's just all out of whack right now. We're to the point where ya gotta go with the guys that are getting it done. Thought Horne did it on both ends tonight. We'll see if he continues to get minutes under the bright lights. Hope so. -
I realize the score was a little tighter than we were hoping, but I thought there were a lot of good things that happened today. Energy was a lot better. Southern had a couple really quality players and they played a little circus ball at times. - Horne showed pretty well tonight, huh? It's a small sample size, but he does all the things Jack doesn't. Right now he's just a better basketball player. I think Jack is talented and will be a contributor down the line, but he's just not good right now on either end. - Thought the stalwarts had decent nights. Not great, but solid. - Ed didn't play much in the 2nd half. Defensive breakdowns, I think. Had a lot of success on the offensive end. Off night, I think. - Liked that Jordy and Roby got to play a lot tonight. - I want to see more of Jordy and Ed on the floor together. - Not sure I've ever seen a team with eight fouls before the other team got their first. - Sounds like practice yesterday was pretty physical. - Taylor really is Benny Parker with about 6 more inches, isn't he? Thought he really played with the great effort from the open. - Things are about to ratchet up. Conference play is here. - I still think we're going to see more of what we saw the first eight games than we have the past four more often than not in conference play. - It seems like when Creighton got up big to start the game a couple weeks ago that everyone went "here we go again". It knocked a little bit of the mojo from this team. I know they got back into that game, today I thought they got that back a bit. I don't expect them to beat Indiana, but after that, if they play like they're capable and have shown at times, they can have some success early in conference play. Anxious to see how they look in Bloomington. Hope they use this next week well.

Jeriah Horne on the board!
-
Sometimes, we misread the signs.
-
I tried to warn you all... - Why so little Jordy and Roby in the 2nd half? We were told the freshmen were gonna play more. Where are they? - I don't like Glynn not starting. I don't know what kind of message Tim is trying to send, but I don't think this is the one I'd send. - Ed did good. - Tai kinda disappeared for most of the 2nd half. - Jacobson and McVeigh aren't contributing much right now. - The NU I saw play vs. Dayton, UCLA, Kansas and at times vs. Clemson can compete in the Big Ten. - The one we saw today can get beaten by anybody as well. - This can't continue to happen. Just can't. The program has to get beyond games like this. Has to.
