NEBRASKA vs USC game day thread 1-1-25

It is a fine line in scheduling games you should win and a few tough non conference games. We have Creighton every year, and maybe a couple more so this year GT and one more. Yes if you schedule those tougher games we could come up on the wrong end. But when you schedule teams you win by 20-30 and it really does not get decided til the 4th then that does not help much as well. -

Well I would think there is not much. Let us see how we do in the second half. -

Nice first half again today. We need to come to play starting the 3rd quarter. Nissley has had a good start. Clearly had a off game against UCLA with 6 turnovers. Prince is making smart decisions. Will need more from Markowski. -

Hoping we can have a better game today. Would be nice to see us hit some of those open shots and not miss so many bunnies. -

They do have a history of success. Quite a bit AIAW which was before the NCAA had WBB as a sport. Quite a few Sweet16s (6 under the current coach) and a couple of Elite8s. -

You could say we lost our best player (Potts) to injury. I will say we are making progress. Before Potts was lost for the season we had finally got to a point where we could be a consistent team in the 20-30 range, ranked or receiving votes. With that and a run in the B1G season/tourney and maybe a sweet16 and we could have found us in that next range and getting better portal players taking a harder look at Nebraska along with more 4-5 star players giving us a harder look. Now we maybe a couple of years out again even with a healthy Potts back next year. -

Not sure what is going on with Alexis this year. She spends too much time thinking about what to do and then is so off balance. With Hake really our best player on the court most games she does not come close to having the most minutes on the court. That would be Prince which I am fine with but she needs to call her own number more. Hake had 19:37 minutes yesterday. We need more from her. -
Michigan still lost by 20 points. Both USC and UCLA will make the rest of the B1G adjust or be left behind. This is kind of what we saw in the old PAC12 with these tall athletic players. It's not getting any easier folks.

Well I was hoping for a closer game but I am not surprised by the final score. UCLA is very deep, has great length, quicker, and we can see why they beat South Carolina. I agree we may see the same result against USC. I agree on keeping in the hot hand but this is not Amy's MO. It never will be. UCLA also has at least 4 portal players. Many of them very good players. In this age of the portal/transfers this is something we need find a way to take advantage as it is not enough to just bring talent from the HS ranks. On to USC. -

Only down by 7 and it could have been worse had then not missed all those threes. -

We need to keep it close in the first half. Nice to be up by one at this point. -

Agree with what has been said. Without Potts, Amy may have to make some adjustments to help get our shooters open. Still think Britt needs to call her own number more. She has the ability to drive to the basket and is a good FT shooter. 7 points and 4 rebounds from our 4s will not cut it most nights. Yes Amy may need to roll the dice. -

We have players that can make the 10-15 footers and we just do not look for them. It is a three or a bunny mostly. -
Watched Creighton go down to UCLA yesterday 70 to 41. Tough game for Jensen, 2-15 with 4 points.

A good road test for us coming up on Saturday at GT. Would be nice to get a W as our road trip to CA will not be easy. Will need the type of start we had against MN these next three games. -

Hargrove continues to get better with more court time. While I am sure Alexis knows what to do in the paint, you can fall into bad habits and I think that is part of her problem right now. She can be a good passer. She needs to pass back out to a guard and then reset her post position and we need to look for her again if we are not in a good spot to shoot a three. Also she is a little predictable right now (post moves) which is part of her falling into a bad habit. Nothing that can't be corrected. Watching Allison sort of takes me back to her first year. All the time away and you can see it is there she just needs more court time. -
Watched the Iowa and Tenn. game from yesterday. Iowa lost by 10. Iowa has some work to do. They had 31 turnovers in the game. Affolter is not much of a offensive threat at this point. She had only two points and that was a open put back on a rebound in the middle of the 1st quarter. Their starters all played 28+ minutes with 3 over 30 minutes. Feel like Iowa will have some rough games this year.

While I am not a fan of using 9-10 players a game, this is Amy's style and she will mostly run with it. Now there will be games where she will shrink her bench play to more of a quick break for our starters but those games are far and few. We will need to continue to have these type of starts if we want to have the type of season we all want to see. Thought Britt needed to call her name a bit more with her shot. Nice to see both Rimdal and Weidner play well. 12 assists and only 1 turnover between the two. Feel like Allison is still finding her way back still. She does play more fluid without any brace which is probably why she has been without one. Nice to see Hargrove step up today. Knew it would take her time to adjust to D1 BB. Not sure what is going on with Petrie but she has not stepped up which is why she has not seen a lot of court time. So someone needs to tell Moriarty she plays better without a shirt under her uniform. Agree on the turnovers as that will come back to bite us. Now we need to have no letdown these next few games til we get to GT. -

Coley is a 3 and not a 4. It wasn't til this off season that she spent time at her natural position. Only going back to a 4 since Potts injury. Had she been able to play the 3 I think she would have had a better college career. That said she will do whatever coach asks of her to I will give her props for being a great team player even if she has not produced much on the court. -

With Coley starting it looks like Amy is trying to find someone who wants to replace Potts as a starter. We have not found her yet. As pointed out on another thread, maybe 4 guards and Markowski is the answer. Also would not mind seeing both Markowski and Bozan in at the same time. Will give props to Petrie for a nice second half tonight. We start like this on Sunday and will be staring down a loss. The girls know it can't happen so will see if this is their wakeup call. -
Kansas City (2-4) vs. Nebraska (4-1) Game Thread

Markowski is getting a lot more attention this year. We still are working through the process of getting her the ball in good spots and she also needs to make quicker decisions since she is drawing 2 and sometimes 3 players sagging in on her. I feel like it will come. Best cure is she passes to a guard who makes them pay with a made three. -

Hake is a streaky player. When she is on it can be pretty good. Her defense is better. Overall this is her best start to a season. With Potts out we need someone to step up. It may need to come from the guards because so far neither Petrie or Hargrove have shown to be able to lessen the loss of Potts to this point. Hopefully both will get better as the season goes along.
