Thought I'd share this with all of you. This morning, I was rummaging in a box of keepsakes that I saved from my parents' home after they passed, looking for a couple of special things that I had wanted to give my kids as gifts for Christmas this year. While I was looking through some of these old, treasured objects, I came across a newspaper clipping my mother had saved about me, early in my Army career, that had been published in the local paper. And tucked within that folded up newspaper was a postcard to my mother from a person whose name I didn't know. The postcard was marked by the local post office in the small town where she grew up and the date they received it was January 24, 1945, when my mother was a teenager. The postcard was from one Russell D. Lyon. Private Russell D. Lyon, 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, US Army. I'd never heard that name before, but I assumed it was someone she knew in high school. And apparently someone special enough that she kept that post card all those decades. Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to try to find out whatever became of Pvt Russell D. Lyon, American serviceman. I plugged his name, unit number and service number into a search and a result popped up right away. And, when I saw the search result, my heart ... sank. Private Russell D. Lyon was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge, December 26, 1944, a month before that post card reached my mother's home. US Soldiers marching single-file near St. Vith, Belgium, 1945 Russ, this nation owes you a debt of gratitude we can never repay. The best we can do is to honor your memory. If you are the praying kind, please offer a prayer for the repose of the soul of Private Russell D. Lyon, US Army, Infantry. Merry Christmas to all of you and yours. https://www.abmc.gov/print/certificate/397228

Best Nebraska Men's Basketball Coach This Century?

The hell. Rick Majerus always lived in a hotel. Some guys just prefer it that way. -
Unfair to imply AV hadn't bought into team concept; unfair to suggest we expected him to be Bob Cousy. Listen, you remember in the open scrimmage when he tried to do the ol' shake-n-bake on Keisei? And Keisei stayed in front of him, Verge misses the shot, it goes to the other end and Keisei nails a trey? We didn't see that Alonzo Verge much last night, but we saw an awful lot of that Alonzo Verge in the many losses we've had before last night. I don't have a problem when Verge has an open lane and explodes to the rim, even if it's in the first few seconds of a possession and there hasn't been any ball rotation. I mean, if it's there it's there. But what I have a problem with is when it's not there and he goes all Curly Neal trying to dribble the Washington Generals into submission before doing some circus shot at the backboard, which sometimes goes in and sometimes does not. There were only a couple of times last night where I felt Alonzo forced a drive. There were a few other times where he exploded to the rim early in the shot clock and had an easy make because it was there. Having him recognize when it's there and taking it versus when it's not and getting his teammates involved is a HUGE improvement and a significant development IMO. I'm going to give him props for last night because he got his teammates involved and, as a result, guys were getting rhythm shots and, as a further result, they were making them.

Doc going with the green no contact jersey tonight. -
And THAT is what they call "projection."

And what a day it was.

You made a claim about the season 5 years ago without context. Someone else offered some details about that season to provide context to what YOU claimed. It's not like they just, out of the blue, started complaining about officiating in games that occurred 5 years ago. IF that's what had happened, then I could understand your response. But that's not what happened. What happened is that YOU brought it up, and their response was germane to what you said. Edited to add: By the way, this is an example of what they call "gaslighting." Person A: Makes claim about past event, missing pertinent context. Person B: Participates in conversation about past event by sharing additional context. Person A: "Wow, you sure are obsessed about (topic that I brought up.)"

OMG, please be better than this. You made a statement. Somebody offered a rebuttal to your statement. And you accuse them of dwelling on something? Total bullshit response.

Who else has made this observation?

All I can say is those ppl who bought up extra lower bowl tickets during the seat-yourself process instead of letting guys like me move up, I hope you're enjoying those empty seats from tickets that aren't being used. j/k

So maybe hiring Jerry Bush's grandkid wasn't the can't-miss play we might have thought. -

Doc Sadler made like 20 bucks an hour and management eventually bumped him up another 50 cents, and when he had the audacity to take the full buyout when he was fired, some people on this very board acted like he had robbed them personally of the money. I don't recall being as pissed off at any group of fans on a message board ever. To those douchebags: We're paying Fred almost as much per win as we paid Doc per season. How do you like them apples? If you were among those who were pissed about Doc's buyout, I want to hear you complain about the $3.5 million Fred is getting paid for the product on the floor this season. -
Armstead Hired as Nebraska Senior Woman Administrator
Norm Peterson replied to HuskerFever's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Rocky start for Ms. Armstead. We'll see how things go with basketball tonight, but our normally excellent volleyball squad has lost half of its matches since she came on board. Let's be honest here: though none of us really had any idea what his job duties were, we can at least all agree that even Marc Boehm didn't screw up volleyball. (Since no one else is making Marc Boehm jokes in this thread, I guess you've left it up to me. Challenge accepted.) -

So, how'd the coach before Cipriano do? Can you include him in your chart? -

You mean like Marc Boehm? Oh God, I can see it now: "We have NO IDEA what she does, but she must be doing a terrible job of it because we aren't winning." At least she gets to claim credit for volleyball, though, right? -

Are you going with "coach to be named later"? Sorry, that's not one of the options. This isn't the NBA draft. We can't trade for future picks. I don't make the rules. -
I've thrown in information on career W/L records, post-season appearances, etc. That's just for some context. You don't have to rely on that information to make your choice. You can use whatever metric you want. Those stats are by no means the only relevant pieces of information a person could use to make this determination. I did not, for example, look at how many all-conference players each coach produced, or what their average Kenpom rankings were. Those might be useful pieces of information as well. Use whatever you think is relevant.

Time Machine: thoughts on this hypothetical lineup
Norm Peterson replied to aphilso1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Your last paragraph: "So cutting to the chase, if we had a roster today of Spencer/McCray/Jones/Kavas/Smith, I wouldn't expect our record to be much better than it is. I think we'd still suck. And that makes me wonder if our talent is actually improving." Explain your logic to me. It sounds like what you're saying is that this group of cherry-picked players from the past would also be bad if we threw them into a starting lineup together; therefore, our talent now hasn't gotten any better than it used to be. If that's what you're saying, then I don't think your conclusion follows from your premise. -
