You're starting backcourt went 1 for 6 from the field last night. Ray's season long disappearing act continues, and Tai couldn't knock down a jumper if you paid him money. This certainly isn't the ONLY reason we lost, but this type of production is inexcusable.

Ray is, and always has been, a one-trick pony. If he has a skilled defender on him who can stick to him like glue, his impact is almost entirely neutralized. The talk about diversifying his game never amounted to anything. There's still no dribble-drive component to speak of.

Ray is also a one-dimensional three-point threat in that he's only effective in catch-and-shoot situations. If you force him to put the ball on the floor prior to taking a shot, his odds of making the shot drop dramatically, to the extent that those shots shouldn't even be taken because the success rate doesn't justify the attempt.

If you can get Ray open looks on the perimeter, he's deadly, but few teams are willing to allow him that opportunity.

I've never been a big Gallegos advocate because the guy is just too one dimensional for my taste. His shockingly-low number of FT attempts over the past two seasons shows just how one-dimensional he is. I felt he was greatly overvalued on this board last year when the topic of the 2013-2014 team was discussed. I expected him to be more of a sixth man whose minutes would be dictated by how hot he was playing, but a suitable replacement never emerged, so he starts.

Ray generally plays pretty good defense, but we need more well-rounded guard play in this league.

Not sure Ray is even one-dimensional.  There are nights he couldn't throw open looks into the ocean while standing ankle deep in it.  He has one game and makes us all say WOW and forget the 6 bad ones since the last WOW game.

Hooper,

I think the end of  your last sentence sums it up pretty well  ..."but we need more well rounded guard play in this league ".  Speaking offensive ability only, this can be said of virtually every player on our team.  I would submit we have 3 current players who fit into the "well rounded" category...Terran, Shavon and Leslee.   And I realize you could argue only Terran.   For their positions, these are the most well rounded offensive players on the team.  We have some major catching up to do.  Now, I hope we have some sleeping giants on our roster that can find their grove and confidence and or just develop through some Pettewayan off season hard work.  I also realize that different situations can bring out confidence, moxy in a player.  For example ...does anyone doubt that Petteway was capable of averaging more than 3 points a game his FR year at TT ?   A  different situation was given that enabled him to flourish ( not to take away the hard work that he has done in the meantime ).   The opposite is true with Ray... he had to be taking shots last year.   And although he didn't hit a great percentage, he absolutely worked his tail off on offense and defense and was a MAJOR part of our upstart, surprising team.   This year...it's like the situation just hasn't been right for him.

Many here are way smarter than me when it comes to then putting the offensive part with the DEFENSIVE part and therefore the total player.  My comments have simply been what I see offensively and in the context of the kind of player I see rolling off the opposing Big 10 benches.
