Bold prediction: The B1G will win the National..
ajb5856 replied to PimpMario's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Agreed. Very difficult to make the NIT. I argue this with non-basketball people all the time when they say "Nebraska sucks, can't even make the NIT" as if any team that doesn't make the NCAAs automatically gets placed in the NIT. -

"The NCAA announced a revamped selection process starting with the 2006 tournament. The main highlights are: Teams are no longer required to have .500 or greater records to receive bids. Even with this change, however, all teams receiving invitations for the NIT have had .500 or greater records." -

Teams don't have to be .500 to make it. I'm pretty sure anyway. I thought they got rid of the .500 record requirement a couple years ago. Now, no sub .500 team has been selected since they got rid of the requirement, so a bid with that poor a record isn't likely but is allowed. Somebody find this and call me out if I'm wrong. This Nebraska team would be one to press for the first sub .500 bid if we don't reach an even record. -

Resolve. You know when a season goes south and a team just folds? Well, that could've/should've been Nebraska about 3-4 times already this year. And every time you think it could/should happen they come back and win a big game. Yes, tonight was a big game. No, we haven't always kept momentum and won the ones we think we should have, but major credit goes to this coaching staff and the character of this team. They always believe they will get the next one regardless of what happened the last time out. They go out and fight. This is the identity of this Nebraska team. Proud. -
Eichorst freightens me. What he could do is either ruin the momentum of the program (yes there's momentum even if it doesn't feel like it) and roll the dice with with another high risk rebuild delaying any success for several years or he could stick with what we have. My vote doesn't count but I vote to stay the course with the coach who has proven he can get the type of player we need to be successful to nebraska. Now that coach just needs to prove he can take that talent, develop it, and put wins in the win column once that talent matures. That's yet to be seen so I see no point in moving on. I'll still argue that this is Miles' second build at Nebraska. The first, he pieced together some transfers with the leftovers and made the NCAA tournament. Once that team disintegrated he recruited the large class that are the sophomores of today. The previous 2 coaches couldn't recruit the caliber of player we needed to Nebraska. Miles has. There's no reason to not wait and see the fruits of that labor just to roll the dice on someone else.

Those refs had no clue where they even were
ajb5856 replied to ajb5856's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
It's almost like we failed to execute on those plays. And we can't control the refs but only ourselves so we should've either just allowed the layups/dunks or just accepted the bad calls. -

Failure to execute. Sure, if we hadn't failed to execute on one occurrence we win the game. If we screw up one less time then we win the game. The coachspeak always blame yourself and ask yourself what you could've done differently attitude. Control what you can control. I get it. That's the proper attitude for coaches and players so they can improve. But as fans we know that it's just not true. Failure to execute is what cost us the game? Of course you can always execute better and flip the outcome. But we could've executed just as we did (poorly) and still won if a couple calls are flipped. -

Roby got 5 fouls for basically having long arms. How do you pick up a 5th foul on a loose ball while lying on your back? I could go on and on. The inconsistencies were atrocious. The phantom foul on Glynn when Jack flopped was ridiculous. Then there was the time Horne cruised down the baseline only to have the defender do a pull-up on his forearm with no call. That was the type of inconsistency we were dealing with. And we almost won anyway. I don't dislike any of you quit whining about the refs we had our chances people, but dear god why does that excuse 3 refs for being severely incompetent and grossly inconsistent? -

If I'm understanding you correctly, we lost the game. We played so incredibly well in some aspects of the game. Well enough to take #5 in the country or whatever to the wire. We also did or didn't do numerous things that could've won us the game (had a million chances). With all of these things being true (playing well enough to be there yet shortcomings), as an aside, the refs blew major ass. Separate from everything that we did or didn't do and what Wisconsin did or didn't do--the refs failed. I always have and always will hate the "didn't deserve to win" attitude. Everyone saw with their eyes what we failed at. Yes we had a million chances. Despite all of those things, the refs still sucked, and maybe, just maybe we deserved to win even if we didn't do everything perfectly. Wisconsin banked in a 3 for godssakes. He banked it in. Missed so badly that it went in. And had Wisconsin lost and we won, somebody rooting for Wisconsin would've thrown out the "didn't deserve to win" because so and so didn't do something. I hate basketball so much right now. -
There. Blamed the refs. Come at me with all the didn't deserve to win, turnovers, missed layups, missed freethrows blah blah blah blah blah. Despite all of that and all of our chances, the refs absolutely blew it hard. Screw them. Worst I've ever seen and it's not even close.

Ed was never a gametime decision for these last games. I would believe the out for the year talk before any gametime decision talk as that is probably just to screw with opponents. Ed's original goal was to come back in mid February but I don't know that he's made any progress in walking without pain. They weren't going to MRI the foot again until that happened. I haven't heard of a repeat MRI yet but could've missed it I guess. That's why I wouldn't believe he's anywhere near being a gametime decision.

uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 9, Ed 22 - Michigan State

Coach Mo does have real connections in Illinois recruiting. There's no arguing that. I'm not taking a side in the Molinari's fault/not Molinari's fault for the poor 3 point defense. I'm just stating that there's a real possibility that Mo isn't a part of the staff next year should Miles remain the man (I think he will). -

We'll see if Coach Mo is let go after the year. I know that Miles and Molinari haven't coached together for years and years, but they sure are buddies. I think Molinari is Miles' Banker if you know what I mean. As in Mark, not the person who works at a bank. -
Great news that it's not related to his previous injury, not so good news that he's dealing with this at all. Thanks for the update. He's had some nice plays defensively. You can kind of see the tentativeness on the offensive end but not being 100% explains some of that. Still waiting for that big breakout game but it's coming!

People are saying we need to win. Of course we do. A lot of people are also saying Miles should have next year. I believe this too. I'm in the boat that we should be (more) patient. I don't want this team to be blown up because despite what the record says we are, the team plays hard and has been 'close'. At the fault of Miles, he had to basically do a second build for this program. This is year 2 of that second build in my mind. It's a build in my opinion that started with a core of freshman (Ed/Glynn/Jack/Jacobson group) that are lineup up to have a successful team in their junior and senior seasons. That group anchors a slower build approach that Miles didn't use for his first build when he first arrived. We made the tournament with his piecemeal first bunch of Doc leftovers and transfers. When that blew up after Petteway and Pitchford left he reloaded with freshmen. I have a hard time with the thought that Eichorst could blow this up after this season. I think a lot of people who are really questioning Miles, still think he should be given next season. I hope Eichorst doesn't do anything after this season because I have a hard time believing that the next guy won't have the exact same struggles here. And while the record points to who we are and who Miles is, I personally see a team that's as close as it's ever been.

Extremely frustrated but can you guys imagine the positivity right now if we sat at 5-3 instead of 3-5? We are two plays, two brief moments away from that. And yet here we are in a very negative place. It would be let's just hold on, squeak a couple more out until Ed gets back, and then make our push for the tournament. Instead it's a question of whether the team folds and packs it in or if they are able to fight on and save the coaching staff. Do we have any more left or is this it? How demoralizing were those two last second Ls? The fight of them team would be quite a bit different right now at 5-3.

uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 9, Ed 20 - @ Northwestern

Jordy hasn't proven he can play for long periods without fouling so I don't believe playing Jacobson and Jordy at the same time is really a legitimate option. -
Ed Morrow is our most important player.
ajb5856 replied to PimpMario's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Yes. It's as simple as this. We've lost 4 in a row because we haven't gotten defensive stops and closed out possessions. It's been a layup drill for opposing teams. That's where Ed comes in. Plugs the middle, gets rebounds. -

Ed has bad feet and maybe he's using his preference for Jordan's as an excuse here. But, Adidas either will not make a full custom shoe (they'll do custom insoles) or there is not time to get this made for this season. They think they may have to get a size 15 and stretch the shoe.
-
Don't forget about the foot problem last year and the fact that he played musical shoes last season too. This is beyond stupid but it comes with the outrageous equipment and gear contracts. This isn't high school where everyone wears whatever brand their parents bought them. I find it outrageous that there's not some provision or loophole regarding student athlete health if everything else has been tried. But I can see why's there's not as well because then they would all wear what they wanted eventually.
-
And now confirmed when I go to the adidas basketball website. 1/2 sizes up to 14.5 and then goes 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.
-
Well this is Adidas we're talking about. Their normal sizes go up to 14.5 but then they probably jump from 15, 16, 17, etc
-
We have multiple guys playing through various ailments that they may not be playing through if it wasnt their last go-round or if we had greater depth. There's nothing out in the public so that's all I will say. Go Nebrasketball. It doesn't sound like Ed will be back until mid-February at the earliest. Adidas sent 10 pairs of shoes for him to try and none of them were winners. They did a custom mold of his foot. Now the issue is Adidas doesn't make a size 15 1/2. He's been wearing a 16 because that's what they have but needs to downsize a half size. At what point can the university break contract or make an exception for a player because the contracted equipment is damaging their health? Can they let Ed wear a pair of Nikes and just rip the swoosh off? A plain label shoe? Do we need to worry about losing a player to transfer because they can't wear Adidas equipment? I don't know what the actual contracted rules are but if you watch Ed before the games in warmups he is usually wearing a pair of Jordan's and then switches right prior to game time. Ed was held out of practice for 2 weeks prior to the Northwestern game. We need him back.
-
So from the year 2000 thru 2012 I never remember having the thought that we 'should' win a conference road game. I may be off and somebody can remind me of a conference roadie that they remember expecting to win but in my recollection those games were all losses before the opening tip. My point is that expectations have changed. That is a good thing. These losses are all still losses, but despite his record, this is how Miles has elevated this program. We have a legitimate roster and an expectation to win. You can be frustrated but I'll continue to think anyone wanting the fire Miles discussion to be a real thing is a crazy person. If you think the answer is to fire Miles after this season with a stacked roster and a former 5 star transfer coming in you are flat out crazy. I think the average conference margin last year was something like 1.6 ppg. This year is going to be about the same. That's on average a basket per game from running the table in conference. 18-0. Now, not gonna happen but my point is that if an incredibly young team can do that then there's plenty of reason to believe that that team can learn to win and collect Ws when the majority of that team is a junior/senior. If you just look with your eyes instead of glaring only at the win-loss column then it makes zero sense to blow all this up now.
