Connor must be really sick yet - he has just looked awful both in his short first half appearance and again now. -

Not that he would have made the next one - but the NW player was in the lane way early on that last FT -

Martinelli gets every call. I thought Barnhizer was easy to hate - but Martinelli might be ever more unlikable. -

Assume this is a reference to Meah - I have seen no evidence that he can do anything close to "jump out of the gym" - but that is probably beside your point. I do get what you are saying about how we use him and you point is well taken. But, at the same time if you are going to have a team defensive system can it be completely different with Morgan or Berke at that spot than it is with Meah? If you do play defense differently with different players on the floor does that inhibit your ability to defend as a "unit" over time? On a somewhat related note what I was wondering last night is whether our frequent switching and hard hedging for screens is failing to take advantage of what defenses are apparently now allowed to do. When Brice or Connor are trying to run around screens most defenders just grab and hold them so they can't get away - Maryland was doing that very much last night - one guy just grabbed Connor around the waist with both hands when he was trying to go around a screen. As long as the Big 10 refs let you grab off ball cutters you are trying to follow in pure man to man - why bother with all the switching? -

I have just seen him play live in the red white scrimmage - but from that I certainly did not see a player I would expect to see at point guard. Not quick at all - and did not see much in the way of ball handling or court vision. He is a shooter not a ball handler from what little I have seen and heard anyway. -

Maryland is a very talented team - and played very well tonight. Particularly given we were playing without Berke we needed several things to happen to win the game: 1. We needed Maryland to shoot poorly - obviously the opposite happened. Nearly 60% from the field and not sure what they ended up at from 3 but they were 6 out of 10 at halftime. 2. We needed a quick whistle because Maryland is much more athletic and physical than we are - and played that way tonight. Again - kind of the opposite as for most the game the refs really let pretty much everything go - which almost led to brawls a couple times and at least contributed to the rebounding discrepancy. If Maryland faulters early in the NCAA tournament it will likely be due to them running into refs that will not let them play the way Big 10 refs allow in conference games. 3. We needed to shoot well from 3. We did make some unexpected 3's - but Brice was not quite his usual self - and the 0-4 from Connor really hurt (apparently he was one of the flu victims which might explain his off game). Despite all that we were in the game until the end. Our effort was good under the circumstances and we did some things (i.e FT shooting) very well to stay in the game. (FWIW hard to believe we did not win a game where Meah and Morgan were a combined 6-6 from the line - never thought I would see that :) -

Actually I don't think he is even the most immature player on his team. Queen behaves like a toddler on the court. Not sure I have ever seen a player whine as much. Then at the end he taunts the crowd like an arrogant little brat. Extremely talented player but needs to grow up a lot. If I was his father he would definitely get an earful about behaving that way on the court. Willard really should step in and coach him to act more mature. I get that he is a freshman - but again he acts like he is a middle schooler at best. Reese is not quite as naturally gifted - but is really physical. I get that he taunts and uses his strength in ways that should not really be allowed. But that is where his advantage lies on the court and he tries to use that to his benefit. As long as the officials allow him to play that way - why would he stop. Again the two are very talented and effective players. But their behavior is like a Baby and a Bully. Maybe they each have a little bit of both - but to me Queen in the more obvious Baby with his on court behavior. -
Thanks for the reply. I sit in row one and don't remember being too bothered b the sight lines - but we are also at the far end so certainly might have been an issue on the side people were going out. I also was just thinking about the side opposite the benches. Frankly I am not really advocating for a return to the old policy. I just wish they would be a little more flexible - like giving floor access to people with legitimate mobility issues after the game is over.

Just curious but can you say more specifically what were the "major logistics issues"? People went out on at the floor level for the first several years (including me at times and members of my family all the time) and the only "issue" that I ever noticed was that people did not like the look of fans leaving right along the court before the game was over. That was the only reason I have ever heard for shutting off the floor access to the lower bowl seats. What other reasons are there? Why would it be a security issue - that all happens at the building entrance which is at floor level? Not trying to be a jerk - just honestly am curious about what these other "nightmarish" issues are that you reference. It is a building that was well designed for games and concerts in terms of viewing - but very poorly designed in terms of ingress and egress. The north entrance is potentially almost as big as the one on the south (doors are closer together but there are quite a few of them) like they thought people would be entering close to equally from both sides. But in fact far more people come in from (and go out) the south side because that is where the Haymarket business are - and the bulk of the closer parking as well. FWIW I am one that enters from the north most of the time and for awhile that was great because you always walked right in while there were lines at the south entrance. But the middle of last year PBA decided that they would only staff 1 or 2 of the doors on the north entrance - so all the sudden you have big lines to get in there at times as well. That sucks - but I think it is derived mostly be PBA cutting staffing for games. FWIW it is very easy to leave on the north side - you just walk right out - while exiting the building on the south can now be a nightmare. There are stair exits that allow people to go out doors other than the allowed entrances - but most people don't know about them so they don't get used. If they made those exits more noticeable maybe by opening the doors or putting up a sign I think it would help alleviate the massive buildup that happens above the escalator when people try to leave. It is those kind of issues exiting the building that do cause people to want to leave early. As I final point to me original question - again because I usually go in and out on the north side I have to go up to the concourse anyway - so not existing at the floor is not a big deal to me personally. But I am also aware of fans who stopped going to games because they could not go up and down that many stairs to get to their seats from that upper concourse. That was not an issue when they were allowed to go out at floor level.

Big win today. Thought the guys did a very good job keeping their head and focus in the face of some really atrocious officiating. Rollie in particular seemed to be a victim. Two times they called fouls on him when he literally did not even touch the guy at all. Not sure how Fred keeps his cool when things like that happen - but players also did a good job of playing through it. Brice is just a stud. I have moved on from demanding that he be 1st team all-conference. He really has to be in the running for conference player of the year. Can't think of anyone more important to their team. Juwan is our glue guy and we get good contributions from others but Brice is the key this year and he keeps responding despite other teams clearly focusing their defense to stop him. Thursdays game is huge. Hope we get a good crowd - and hope Berke can go but even without him we need to find a way to win that one. Would certainly put us in a good spot if we can get that win. Especially if we can keep that momentum into the NW game vs a team that should really be down given their injury troubles - and then maybe also steal one at Penn State. But - one game at a time. Lets get another big win vs a ranked team Thursday !! -
Hoppen in 84-85 (his junior season) averaged 23.5 points on a team that averaged 71.8. 32.7% of the team points. (His senior year he averaged 22.1 on a team that averaged 70.8 - but he missed the last 10+ games at the end of that season so not sure what we averaged in the games he played). Maric in 06-07 was 18.5 on a team that averaged 66.8 - 27.7% (FWIW - Moe's teams generally averaged more points that Doc's teams did - even without a 3 point line.)

Wow. Did not realize that. A terrific stat. If I am remembering correctly I think one of the halves against Illinois we had our 1st turnover with less than 2 minutes left also. Protecting the ball is huge. -
Great job by the team not to get down after the early gut punch from Washington. Looked like we were the better team even in the first half - but early on they just made everything. Sure evened out eventually though and we really had a good night offensively. Brice was his usual self and Connor hit some big shots tonight as well. Really good bounce back after those two home losses. (FWIW when Dylan Harper plays Rutgers is really good. They would definitely be a rated team if he had been healthy all season.) Now we just need to defend our home court and we are in the tourney. Am I the only one who thinks that Brice gets fouled way more this year than in the past but goes to the line much less ??
