FTR, I don't agree with @Craytonhater's reasoning. But if you follow his reasoning to its logical conclusion, the only coach we had this century who left the program BETTER than he found it would have been Barry Collier. But I think Craytonhater is wrong. Tim Miles inherited a program that won 12 games the year before he arrived. And only 4 games in conference. In his 2nd season -- and I DON'T CARE IF IT WAS LIGHTENING IN A BOTTLE, IT WAS STILL AN NCAA TOURNEY APPEARANCE -- he lead us to the Dance. His last two seasons, we made the post-season both years. He turned the program over on a high note. He delivered the most conference wins in a single season in the history of the program his penultimate year here. Two consecutive post-season appearances before he was shown the door. Oh, but there wasn't much talent in the cupboard when Fred took over, so they say. Hey, friends, let's be honest, FRED BLEW THE CUPBOARD UP! He wasn't planning on keeping any of Miles' guys. He was going to fill his own cupboard with his own players and he liked Thor and Dachon Burke and had the room so he let them stay. It wouldn't have mattered who we might have had. If you recall the discussion at the time, it was noted he did the same thing when he took over from McDermott at ISU: he flipped the roster and basically started over from scratch. So, don't tell me about the shape of the roster at the time Fred took over as though it's some excuse for what's happened since. Matt A was hired to go out and fill a roster and that's what he did. It's not like Fred showed up in September and had to hit the floor with whoever was still there from the prior regime. Anyway ... if you agree with Craytonhater that he left the program in worse shape than when he arrived, fine, but I look forward to your compelling explanations.

Not trying to be funny; just following your logic. If Tim Miles left the program worse than he inherited it, then the only coach to leave the program in BETTER condition than when he got there would have had to be Barry Collier. Look at his record his last season. He made the NIT. How can you argue it wasn't Barry?

If, hypothetically, there was an opening, would you want Trev Alberts to consider him?
-
But it is what it is. There's no reasonable way that I know of to separate out the ones where the guy is guilty and the girlfriend is recanting because she doesn't want the repercussions of him getting in trouble vs. where he's not guilty and she just exaggerated things when she called the cops. If you think he's guilty and that he therefore shouldn't be employable now, the 2-3 years where he would hypothetically sit out shouldn't change your view and you should still consider him to be radioactive waste 2-3 years from now. Does he have any prior history of domestic violence or protection orders? If he did, I assume we'd have heard about it by now. And then you'd maybe presume, OK, well, looks like he did it again. But if he doesn't have any such history, why should this one phone call to the cops where she now says it's been overblown (or whatever she's saying) end his employability?
-
@hhcmatt: His girlfriend is saying it was a big misunderstanding and he isn't guilty of what he's been charged with. I think he should be eligible for employment, and I would be OK if we hired him, assuming we had an open spot.

Whatever happened to believing all women? "As Chris’ fiancé and biggest supporter, I apologize for the role I played in this unfortunate event. I realize that my frustration, when breaking his glasses, initiated a physical struggle between Chris and myself. Chris did not strangle me, and I told that to law enforcement that evening."

I agree the Hoiberg hire seemed, at the time, like a can't-miss. If you HAD to fire your current coach AND Hoiberg was available and interested, it would seem like a no-brainer hire. I got a ration of grief at the time from a number of people on this board who claimed I was going down with the Tim Miles ship. I was reminded of this recently when someone said my claimed support of Miles was "revisionist history" and so I went back and looked at the old threads. Seeing how it has all played out, it's kind of hard not to come back with a little bit of "I told you so." On the other hand, I'm willing to accept that the Tim Miles ship sailed and to agree that Hoiberg would have appeared like a home run hire, would have been expected to succeed readily, and can only be criticized in hindsight. Nobody would have anticipated the degree of failure here, including me. Still ... -

After 7 years, this university deserved better? Better than what? Better than 13-5 in conference in year 6 followed by a year 7 in which two starters went down with season-ending injuries and we STILL had the end-of-year heroics we had, including a second-straight trip to the NIT? If Hoiberg's 5th Husker team somehow manages to reach the post-season next year, people around here would wet themselves. Some of them being the same people who argued Tim Miles should be fired after reaching the post-season in year 7. The patience with Fred and impatience with Tim mystifies me. -

OK and you're seeing how well that played out. If we were Rutgers and Steve Pickiell was Tim Miles, posters on this board would have been calling for him to be fired after two straight last-place finishes his first two seasons and an almost-last-place finish his third. This university deserved better after 7 years of Miles? Did we set Miles up for success here? If you want to say we did, then explain to me why Scott Frost and Fred Hoiberg were both allowed to bring in outsiders -- like the Navy Seal guy -- to work with their teams on leadership and toughness, but Tim Miles was not. Explain that one to me. -
it’s still a third possibility.

I have it on good authority that Luka Garza was a Husker lean until Miles was not extended. We had Xavier Johnson and lost him because Kenya bailed due to job uncertainty. We lost Mika Adams-Woods who’s been a 4- year starter basically for Cincinnati. We might have gotten Chucky had we kept Miles. The Davis brothers might have been here too. So you can’t really say “Miles had a bad returning roster” without acknowledging why it was that way and who he might reasonably have had if the ADs hadn’t cut him off at the knees. -
Based on what @HB said today, there’s a third option: Fred might negotiate a retirement buyout. Sounds like he might have some health issues that have become a problem.
-
We’re probably not in the running for the guy from San Jose St.

I think it's safe to say his version of events might be quite different from hers. She admits trying to provoke him. She took his reading glasses and deliberately broke them. And then tried to mollify him by saying she'd buy him a new pair. Which, let's just say, "tone of voice" would matter a lot there. The arrest report makes it sound like "mutual combat." She now says he may have just been trying to defend/protect himself. I don't think it's either obvious or readily apparent that he "hit" "struck" or "abused" her. Sometimes people who are emotionally involved get into arguments. Sometimes those arguments can become physical. Sometimes it's the women who start those arguments. And initiate the physical aspect of the confrontation. By the way, Brittney Griner plead guilty to charges related to domestic violence and she got to keep her job.

Listen, you're attacking me with strawman arguments. I'm not going to respond to this. Anyone can search what I said at the time. Time has proven that what I said back then was right. Miles was a better coach than we gave him credit for and he was being hamstrung by the AD's office. Go look at what Tim Miles is doing this year.
