(This summary of the presser isn't in order, it's more grouped by topic/person. First was HCFH followed by Banton and Yvan)
Hoiberg checking in for the first time this year
- Work ethic is good, has to kick guys out of the gym
- Guys are working out without the coaches
- Had one positive Covid test in the group thus far, which is no longer active
- Had their first 'real' intersquad scrimmage on Friday and the players have taken a break from practice until Wednesday
- Multiple guys will initiate the offense (mentions by name Webster, McGowens, Banton)
-
List Banton's playmaking ability as his biggest asset though brings up turnovers at this point.
-
Lists Thor, Webster, McGowens, Mayan, Allen, and Stevenson when listing 3pt shooers.
First game is approximately 42 days away. Hoiberg can't get into any details about hosting a tournament other than if you play in a tourney (which we are planning to host), you can play 27 games. Else, it's 25. (The unspoken holdup here is that the B1G needs to give the OK for teams to play out of conference. A lot like with the McGowens ruling the team is preparing like this will be a go.)
*** Hoiberg specifically mentions Lat Mayan at the 5 *** Is able to make this work due to the length/size he can put at all the other positions.
Approached the season as if Trey McGowens would be eligible. Impactful on both sides, led the ACC in steals, can play multiple positions on offense. Hoiberg talks up his improvement on his shot. "Willingness to make simple plays" (This is a Hoiberg phrase for a guy making the right decision in his offense)
Not sure if I'd put much thought into what Dalano Banton sounded like, but seems to sound very Canadian. Thinks his improvement has been his jump shooting and putting on weight. Mentions getting back to the basics like his footwork and keeping his head still. While in Toronto he wasn't able to access gym and lost weight, which he had to put back on when he came back to Nebraska.
Coach talked about Yvan Ouedraogo's overall progression including during his freshman year and his commitment to development during the offseason. Quoted someone for saying 'the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores'. Hoiberg mentioned that Eduardo has been improving daily and having that sort of length at his disposal has been a benefit for Yvan to practice against it. Yvan realized that he needed to put in a lot of effort into his workouts this summer after playing against the bigs in the B1G. Worked on changing his hand position for his FT shooting.
