uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 8, Issue 17 - @ Rutgers
throwback replied to uneblinstu's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Rutgers may have looked like a team that isn't very good and didn't really want to be there, but our guys deserve credit for putting them in that position/mood. RU did have a bit of momentum middle of the first half when they got it to 8 (I think). But they missed 2 FTs and we jumped on them after that. We did a lot of good things, when it would've been easy to play down to RU's level or to let them keep the momentum, especially considering how we've struggled on the road the past year-plus. And I really liked seeing Morrow build on what he did at Iowa. Hopefully it's starting to slow down for him. He certainly seems to be gaining confidence. Also liked seeing us try some zone and some pressing. It's not going to be a primary defensive style for us, but with our athleticism, I think it can work well as a change-up for small stretches. -

I think we attempted more layups in the game than we attempted in pre-game warmups. -
How tall is he? And does he have a nice jump hook with either hand off his post up move? If so, we can offer him plenty of PT.

I really liked how Morrow played - he had some confidence, didn't fall for shot fakes as often on defense, had a nice blocked shot on help defense - one of his best games. Obviously cannot have a huge offensive drought - 10 pts in 14+ minutes - like we did in the 1st half against a really good team on the road. And obviously cannot put the home team in the bonus in the final 13+ minutes of the 2nd half. Two recipes for disaster on the road. Considering those two things occurred, the margin could've been much worse, so we really had to compete & play hard to stay within shouting distance, which was good to see. Considering the two things mentioned above, that kind of game could've easily gotten into the 20+, 25+ margin range in a hurry. We certainly didn't make them uncomfortable by getting it to a 6- or 7-point game, but we also didn't let it get completely away from us, which easily could've happened. And I'm glad we don't have to play against Gesell anymore. And yes that's sour grapes on my part. Would've been nice to have him in red the past 4 years. He was tremendous in the 2nd half last night. If he keeps it up, and with the way Uthoff is playing, Iowa will hang around in the B1G race for most of the season. -

Man, tough shooting half. We scored 10 pts in final 14-15 minutes. And we missed them from everywhere - near rim, short jumpers, mid-range jumpers, 3s Got to get better in 2nd half right? -

Actually it's been a pretty bad 10-11 minutes offensively - only 10 points in that stretch - hopefully we can get hot here the last 4 min and get back into it before halftime -

Horrible call against Shavon there - Gessel walked badly, drug that foot, big blown call - gives IU 3 pts and Shavon picks up 2nd foul -

Las Vegas says it'll be surprising if we keep it within single digits - of course that's why that city is doing so poorly with so little investment - those guys don't know anything. -

The way things have gone for us lately against teams with key players out, it's probably good that Clemmons will play. -
Agreed - guys who transfer at semester are at a big disadvantage vs summer transfers in that they basically lose a full year, so things have to be really bad at the current school. Doesn't really seem fair. If the NCAA is going to allow players to become eligible in December after a semester transfer, they probably should also allow them to get that year back, just like a summer transfer. Or maybe move hoops to a full 2nd semester sport - start around Christmas time and have a "May Madness." So if you're a player transferring in December, you'd better transfer to a school where you know you're going to get playing time for certain, which probably beats sitting on the bench the back half of the 2015-16 season at your current school and then transferring in the summer & sitting another full year. I guess you get on the floor a semester earlier, even though you end up only "playing" 3 seasons/6 semesters instead of 4/8. Ergo, Thomas should pick NU.

Even if he isn't the savior right away, he would keep the "big" man grumblings at bay for a bit. We have to remember he would be coming in as a RFr next conference season. Is this right? I think guys who transfer at semester cannot redshirt - I think the redshirt must occur within one academic year, not within a calendar year. Since he already played this academic year (2015-16) at TAM, he can't redshirt. And if he played for us in academic year 2016-17, he also wouldn't be able to redshirt. I could be wrong on this, but that's how I understand it. Hopefully we have this problem because he comes here but I think when he would step on the PBA court in December 2016 he'd be a sophomore who would still have a redshirt season available. I believe Agou at G'town is sitting out this full academic year 2015-16 because of injury so he can use a redshirt. So he'll be a junior in 2016-17. He transferred at semester in 2014-15. Another of the top semester transfers from last year, Burton at Iowa State, is listed as a junior this year. He played 1 1/2 seasons at Marquette, sat out 2 semesters as a transfer, and now is playing. So the way I understand it he cannot count the 2 semesters he sat out as a redshirt because he played in both academic year 2014-15 (at Marquette) and 2015-16 (at Iowa St). Those 2 semesters are just lost. Again, I could be wrong on this one, so if someone understands this better than I do, please share.
