They almost always won the Missouri Valley. Their endowment was probably 3-7x larger than any other school in the conference the last decade. Marquette cycles through head coaches pretty frequently. If high standards don't result in a firing, then on-court success equates promotion to a bigger school. Rick Majerus, Tom Crean, and Buzz Williams are recent examples of this. Blue School's Big East involvement coincides perfectly with the replacement of Buzz Williams with Steve Wojciechowski. Wojo was a Coach K disciple with lots of high hopes, but he flopped and is now unemployed. I'm long on Shaka. UNL will never be one of the large fish in the B1G fish bowl in terms of endowment size. Long-term success for us will not be the same as it was in the Big 8/XII.

Birdschool tends to get much more highly-touted recruits than Nebraska does as well. Last year's class with four Top-100 guys was insane. Kaluma and Alexander probably get to the NBA, Nembhard is a G-Leaguer with his small stature. So really no surprise that they have had more on-court success. They get predominantly 3 and 4-star talent. Zegarowski was a Top-100 4-star. Even Ty-Shon Alexander, their most recent NBA washout was a Top-100 4-star. But they can't seem to get guys to the next level. They definitely did not prepare Justin Patton for success, physically or mentally. The only players that really seemed to make development leaps were Khyri Thomas and the Coach's Kid. Khyri was already incredibly efficient his freshman year, so I'm not really sure how much the staff is even responsible for his improvement? They essentially doubled his minutes his sophomore and junior years and his stats responded accordingly. Thus, it would appear that the only way to achieve proper instruction and development at C-word is to have once dripped from the shriveled ballsack of McDermott the elder. I don't think it's any secret that McDermott is a massive douche bag. It's like having a micro-managing boss...maybe the current task at hand gets done a little better and more efficiently, but the employees' personal development is stunted in the long-run.

We need to kill off this sort of thinking. The only people that care about the blue school's accomplishments are Nebraskans. I realize a lot of Husker fans pine for any modicum of success, but on a national level no one cares about them. They like to act like they are an elite basketball school. They have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen one time since 1975. They played UC Santa Barbara (who they beat by one damn point) and Ohio to get there. The Sweet Sixteen is essentially the football equivalent of playing in the Citrus Bowl. Marquette is a private Catholic-Jesuit institution of similar size in the same conference. The pedigree isn't even close.

There will be THREE TIMES as many former Nebrasketballers (Zay, Dalano, and Bryce) on NBA rosters next year as there will be C-word (heir to the plantation) and Iowa (Keegan) players.

We all wish that Bryce had shot that 42.9% 3FG% when he was here at Nebraska. Never would've guessed that Bryce would've shot the deep ball better than Ochai Agbaji. NBA scouts are probably more surprised than we are.

Bryce jacking-up 18FG attempts with 7 of them 3FG attempts tonight. He's been wearing Kobes since he got into the league...I guess tonight he felt like Kobe! I've always heard that the thing coaches/executives are really watching at SL is how easy can a guy flow into the offense and find their shots. SL is like going to a JC where everyone is competing for shine, only some of the SL guys are 4-5 years more mature than their rookie counterparts. If a guy shies away from the spotlight and doesn't grab it, that's more of an indictment than a poor shooting percentage.

He catches the ball off the screen. From the triple-threat position, his left foot is established as his pivot foot:

Bryce v. Bennedict thumbnail! Our guy looking a lot better than the Duke guy at this point Was good to see Bryce hit some early 3FGs because the team was coooold. Footnote: Thursday during practice, the Hornets watched one of their young players (Scottie Lewis) go down with a very gruesome leg injury that required surgery today. They discussed a couple times during the broadcast how the Hornets were likely looking a little timid because of it.

And if you look at the transaction history, most the time he was getting assigned to the G League the day of their game and then getting recalled back to the NBA the very next day. Gotta be difficult -- especially for a guard -- to build chemistry with the team when doing that.

Highlights up on YouTube: 1:32 - First JPJ sighting (near corner) 1:53 - JPJ initiates offense at far elbow, gets fouled (no call), then notices terrible defensive rotation and dumps ball off to teammate for 3FG 2:12 - JPJ setup in near corner, ball rotates to JPJ for open 3FG 2:44 - JPJ drives into paint and gets stuck, kicks out to teammate who drives in for tough layup 3:06 - JPJ comes off screen, drives under the basket, and kicks out to open teammate for 3FG 5:55 - JPJ seals off his man as he works into the paint, attempts a floater, ball tips back out to the Jazz who dish back to JPJ for a layup and foul 6:21 - JPJ tries to shift over to provide some help defense in the post, attempts to strip and I think gets called for the foul. Understandably pissed. 6:31 - Ball gets poked-out, JPJ chases down and collects loose ball before it is stolen, then quickly turns and drills 3FG. Holds the follow-through and stares at his bench afterward. 7:39 - JPJ trails play and spots up at elbow for 3FG, misses short but grabs own rebound off a tip and works inside for layup

FYI, Jeriah Horne is also playing Summer League ball for the Kings if you want to watch someone attempt to steal minutes from Keegan Murray. I'm officially counting him as a "Husker"
-
I really hope that he does not. I'm sure Zay got tired of being one of the few bright spots on a dumpster fire squad last year. He's walking into the same situation. The Spurs are in terrible shape and are in full-on tank mode for the next few seasons. And a lot of teams are going to be taking the L-train next season, praying they hit the Victor Wembanyama lottery. What the Spurs received for Dejounte Murray was not impressive. Heavily-protected first round pick from Charlotte and (2) unprotected first round picks from Atlanta. But by the time they get control of Atlanta's picks, Atlanta should be a solid squad in the East.

For anyone that's interested...JPJ Watch @ 8PM tonight (6-July) on ESPN2 Not sure how much run he'll get given that he played so many minutes in the first game

Just watched some Chet Holmgren highlights and thought I saw a familiar face out there. JPJ was playing for the Jazz https://www.espn.com/nba-summer-league/boxscore?gameId=401445223&league=nba-summer-utah

Roby's $1.9MM team option for 2022-2023 would've become fully guaranteed on July 3rd, so the team picking up the option on July 29th didn't really seem out of the ordinary. But then waiving him before July 3rd is some really petty crap...hardly any money in the grand scheme of things. In addition to robbing Roby of cash, it really screwed him by tying him up with OKC during the first few days of free agency when all the big money moves are happening. So yeah, f*** Sam Presti

Most definitely, he was an interesting guy and became a fan favorite at every stop because of his hard play and eccentricities. Would love to read something recent on him and hear how both him and his pets are doing. He used to have several snakes, alligators, and other exotic animals. He was definitely a South Carolina country boy, I'm sure he enjoying the slower pace of his retirement. I'm a long-time Clippers fan (thanks, Piatkowski ) and I hate to admit it, but one of my favorite Nebraska-Clippers anecdotes is actually a Nebraska-Lakers anecdote. I was watching a Clippers-Lakers game a couple season's ago after Lue took over as HC. Stu Lantz was doing color commentary and told a story about Lue...shortly after he was drafted/traded to the Lakers, Lantz had a chance to meet him and remarked that he was the second Nebraska player in the history of the Lakers and that Lantz was the first. From that moment on, they would start referring to each other as, "Number One" and "Number Two" when they would encounter each other at the Lakers facilities. Flashing forward many years to Lue coaching the Clippers, Lantz ran into Lue before the game and said something along the lines of, "Congratulations, Number Two!" and Lue stopped to chat and thank Number One. I admire the brotherhood shared by former players, but also really cool to see that shared between two guys with a 30-year age difference because of their experiences as Huskers.

Don't forget Mikki "The Snake Man" Moore

Didn't stay up to watch the whole draft

Looking back now it seems pretty cornball, but as an elementary school student when this was unveiled I thought this was pretty cool! I feel like this was one of the first really obvious occurrences of video games influencing sports broadcasting. I'll concede that the XFL did some interesting things, but every network and league is trying to make their coverage appear more like a video game now. Makes complete sense given the demographics being targeted and how titles such as Madden and 2K have become engrained into pop culture. -
Full video. They did indeed give Bryce a bad mic Notes: MJ called Mark Williams to congratulate him but has not yet spoken to Bryce Bryce does not look pleased that they gave Mark Williams his #5

https://www.nba.com/hornets/videos/hornets-media-availability-mark-williams-and-bryce-mcgowens-6-24-22 First media availability...seems like the video is cut rather short though. Also disappointed we couldn't teach Bryce how to properly curve a brim during his short stay in Lincoln. WTF is that point?!?

Partial credit here, they did indeed grab that wing and big to build around LaMelo. Some of these late first-round/early second-round picks really make me question NBA scouting. I do not understand the Spurs infatuation with Blake Wesley at 25. And I really don't get the Lakers taking Max Christie at 35. Both these guys matched Bryce with poor 3FG%, but Wesley could barely touch 65% with his FT%. Christie's point and rebound output is about half of Bryce's despite similar utilization. Patrick Baldwin Jr. was injured most of his Senior year in HS and never truly displayed the on court skill to fully support his high ranking. He turned-down an offer to Duke and chose to play college hoops for his dipshit daddy in the freaking Horizon League and was still mediocre against that low level of competition. Played so well that he got his father fired, but Golden State loves his basketball IQ so he's in the first round. I think the Hornets got a massive steal. Bryce is going to be a massive upgrade over angry dwarf Terry Rozier and underachieving Gordon Hayward. And he won't be making $25-30MM annually like those two. Not so sure LaMelo is going to like playing with Bryce though
-
Hornets (13/15/45) kicking the tires on Bryce today along with Branham and Beauchamp. If they don't shop their picks, they're most likely selecting a wing and big in the first round to build around LaMelo.

From the comments, I think it is obvious that the NBA executive really only watched the latter half of the conference season whereas the B1G assistant had the benefit of seeing a little larger sample size and knowing more the team dynamics. As much talent as they are trying to evaluate, it makes sense that the NBA guys give the most attention to the conference games. The comment about him playing for a blood blood program and getting more attention... If Bryce was one of a handful of Top 30 guys in a program, his utilization drops and he doesn't break-out. Just kind of a dumb comment. Jaden Hardy was potentially the best guy in the class and he is expected to land late in the first round (largely due to his G League route). Patrick Baldwin Jr. was a consensus Top Five player in the class and he will be lucky to go in the first round. Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate were consensus Top 15 guys and both will likely land in the second round. Same goes for TyTy Washington who apparently cannot control his eating habits (12% body fat!). tldr; Fred did just fine with Bryce.

Worked-out with the Timberwolves yesterday. Also, per David Aldridge's "NBA Draft Confidential" for The Athletic: https://theathletic.com/3350046/2022/06/07/nba-draft-top-guards-analysis/
