Iowa City?? You're on. (Seriously, part of my challenge today is the fact that I've shot a basketball once in the past three years. Yet I still think I can do much better than 8-of-30.)

Media Day in Iowa City:

I'm going to drag my 58-year-old self to the campus rec center in Iowa City tomorrow, check out a basketball, do no warmups to loosen my arthritic hand and knees, or my nerve-impinged shooting shoulder, and I'm going to shoot 30 free throws. If possible, I'll get some Iowa students to yell at me while I shoot, but that's unlikely. If it takes me 30 attempts to make eight free throws, I'll stop complaining about Nebrasketball. Forever.

Yep. Watching Mack wears me out. At the beginning of February, I wanted to see: Yvan improve (check) Mack carry the team to at least one more upset (he doesn't have the skills or demeanor to do that; will he ever?) Thor show that he can still produce next year in a back-of-the-rotation role (check) If Cam is back, great. If not — NEXT!

How do you tell the team you just beat, when that team just made 8-of-30 FTs, "Good game"?

Yet here we are, watching this monstrosity.

We've dropped behind NC A&T because of today. We're now at 59.0 percent.

Even if we shoot our regular horrible 60 percent from the line (15-of-25), we're up by two instead of down by six. It's crazy bad.

Imagine a tie game right now, 63-63, in which we were 13-25 from the FT line. We'd be moaning about how horrible our FT shooting is, right? This is beyond imagining for a power conference basketball team. It's beyond imagining for a Class A high school team. It's beyond imagining for a middle school AAU team. Sometimes, I wish I cared less. This looks like one of those days.

Combined, 26 turnovers to 15 assists. Ugly with a capital UGH.

The Summit Conference called. They're no longer interested in expansion if it involves Nebraska or Northwestern.

How can a short, skinny point guard who likes to take the ball the hoop miss three in a row?

I see the tremendous potential in Cam Mack, but sometimes I get the feeling that this is pretty much it. What we've seen is what he is, and I'm not sure that's the guy who will lead us out of this wilderness next year, even with a much better supporting cast.

And he immediately grabs a board.

Northwestern = Iowa's better looking but less talented little brothers.

My hope is that the recruits and sit-outs make it so the only rotation players from this group next year are Yvan and Mack, with Thor pitching in about 8-10 minutes per game.
