Players to watch: A.J. Hammons
The big 280 lb freshman was a big reason that Purdue was able to win in Lincoln. Without the services of Brandon Ubel he and his teammates were able to score 30 of their 65 points in the paint as well as free up 3pt and bar fight specialist DJ Byrd in the 2nd half.
Will the Huskers go to the Post Season?
Purdue have some statistical similarities to the Huskers: Both have awful Effective FG% and both are awful at making their way to the free throw line. Both teams score the majority of their points inside the arc and Purdue doesn't play many guys off the bench.
On the flip side, Purdue is relatively dominant on the boards whereas the Huskers should win the turnover battle. Purdue revolves around the non-related Johnson guards running the show, A.J. Hammons causing havoc inside, and D.J. Byrd waiting to fire up a 3pt shot.
Shavon Shields and David Rivers are completely different players from when these two teams last met, becoming defacto starters. Dylan Talley: Power PG was just starting. With Hammons tiring out over the year, Ubel is capable of shutting him down when he's on the court and becoming a scoring threat when he's on the bench.
Purdue has been heating up the last couple of weeks, knocking off Wisconsin at the Kohl Center, almost beating Michigan, and putting up a ridiculous 89 points on Minnesota. They probably have more to lose than the Huskers as a win here gives them a fighter's chance to make the NIT. Nebraska and their punishing SOS has a shot at the CBI, especially with a win tonight.
This is the B1G tournament so look for a slow paced physical slugfest.
Prediction: Huskers 58 - Purdue 54
