Well, they're not 0-3 anymore

It's beyond Rothstein's "epitome of brutality" when the buy-game you lose is to an in-state D2 foe. And I realize this is Kansas State and Ft. Hays State, but I put it here because it's interesting what happens when you have multiple guys who can bury the three ball.

I posted this in the Haymarket Hardwood forum because I thought it was a good illustration of the kind of action and ball movement and making the extra pass that gets shooters open that you might expect to see in a Hoiberg offense. But I guess it can be down here in the college basketball general forum.

 

But their lefty PG's shot reminds me a lot of Keisei's shot. I could just see him dribbling behind screens like that kid and elevating for a three. In the two games where we scored over 100, what you see from Ft. Hays were the kinds of things we were doing -- driving the lane, kick to the corner, extra pass for an open three.

 

In the couple of games we lost at home, we stopped making those extra passes and setting good screens to get teammates open looks.

 

I think watching Ft. Hays St beat Kansas St is a good illustration of what playing like a team and firing on all cylinders can look like. And they obviously haven't been shooting that hot all year or they wouldn't have been 0-3 going into the game. So, it obviously helps when you get hot from deep. And it helps when you have multiple guys who are good shooters, like I expect we'll have next year.

 

But look at the little things, too. Making smart plays, making that extra pass, setting solid screens to give a teammate room to get a shot off, and then just holding up your end of the deal and making the basket when your teammates set you up to get a shot.

 

Their coach is in his 2nd year, just like Hoiberg.

A former student of mine plays for Fort Hays State, but he's hurt and won't be available until January. It's too bad, as he probably would have started in this one.
