Nebraska (13-4) vs. Iowa (12-5) Game Thread

I will be interested to see the match up between Markowski and O'Grady. Similar size, body builds and playing style. Season long the edge in converting possessions to points goes to O'Grady, but AM has done much better the last few games. If AM gets in foul trouble - or when she just needs a blow - Bozan defend against O'Grady will also be an indication of how far Bozan has come in defensive play. -

thank you. I also just found this ..... "In NCAA basketball, the penalty for an intentional foul is two free throws for the offended player and possession of the ball for the offended team. So I still don't understand. The offended player was Petrie -

The foul was called intentional.. is there a difference between a flagrant foul and an intentional foul? I really don't know -

Bugs said "JP didn't foul out though" Major 'OOPS" on me. I read the box score and for JP's line i read the 5 FDs for 5 PFs . My bad. Apologies to all i might have confused. -

"The refs sucked....shows they were in lala land the whole game." .... not if the situation and the rule are what i cited above - if that is the case the refs knew what to do and were right on top of it. Thinking this thru again - I think that is what happeened -

well, here is another factor. by the time JP was pushed by Adams (the intentional foul) JP had already fouled out. It was she who fouled the shooter. I don't know the rule on this one - or even if there is a rule - for what happens when an already fouled out player gets fouled intentionally. Maybe it is that JP is out of the game so her team gets to choose who takes the free throws, ?????? -

I still can't figure that out. Petrie clearly was fouled by Adams - for her 5th. But JP didn't shoot at all. Had there been a TF, i expected that JP would shoot the two for that foul and then BP would shoot the tech. It was called an intentional, not a technical. -

I would think so. Why would she want to go thru the whole rehab procedure for the third time - especially considering that she obviously is subject to this injury -

so many fumbles and turnovers and steals! So much standing still holding the ball in vulnerable tie up positions. So many possessions in which we don't get off a shot. -

Very nice article in the morning paper about AW and her journey back toward her pre-injury capabilities. https://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/womens-basketball/allison-weidner-is-feeling-like-her-old-self-and-that-can-only-mean-good-things/article_379269fa-bda9-57d6-8546-735065bbae7c.html#tracking-source=home-top-story I hope we see that again today. Also that Markowski can stay around 50% in field goal attempts and that Nissley gets and converts some three point attempts. -

Maybe i haven't paid enough attention but I don't recall seeing Nissley guarded particularly closely. I will watch for that this evening. I think that Rimdal and Prince are the all around best shooters. My hopes for tonight: that "fumbles" are greatly reduced. If your teammate passes you the ball and you have your hands on it, keep it long enough to dribble to better position or pass to a teammate in a better position, or get a good shot Markowski goes two for three or three for five on three pointers and the little voice inside her tells her that the slump is over Prince sheds all signs of reluctance, shoots it up, shows her penetration ability, if she sees a chance to take over the game, take it! Weidner looks all game long like she looked in the last few minutes Sunday afternoon Nissley gets 5+ shots (Futile hope I know but) if a player gets hot on any combination of scores, steals, assists, etc .... Amy, let that horse run! Fingers crossed. -

I am overall an Amy Williams fan, but I have to admit ... I am getting weary of hearing her and Matt say something like "well it wasn't a pretty win (or actually an ugly win), but a win is a win and we will take it". They make it sound as tho each game is an exception whereas in reality it is getting to be the rule. Even some of the 20+ win games against lesser opponents didn't cross over the midpoint of the ugly to beautiful continuum until late in the third quarter. SoDak and Minny were the remarkable exceptions. A lot of that was that the 3s were falling but also there were many fewer incidents of good passes either getting into and then fumbled off of receivers' hands or actually grasped and then a layup was missed. There were cutters and penetrators instead of players just passing the ball around until somebody either threw up a three or got a turnover. One of the oddities (I thought) yesterday was that Nissley, with everyone else missing, took only two shots in 19 minutes. She was playing with a wrap around her left wrist and thumb but that's her non shooting hand. It's frustrating to see Prince making good to great passes to open teammates and then not getting credit for an assist bc the ball was fumbled or a layup was missed. -

Hake has shown very impressive improvement. Petrie some and maybe Bozan is coming along. After those, I can't think of any player development to brag on. The Kendalls give great efforts, but to my (admittedly untrained) eye they look as seniors a lot like they did as freshmen. Maybe the threes will start to fall for AM40 during conference play. I have to believe that if she weren't hitting them in practice she wouldn't have the green light to throw them up during the games. Double coverage is often cited for her decline in scoring, but that only happens down low in the lane. It's a mystery. -
Nebraska (10-2) vs. UCLA (12-0) Game Thread
Tom Jones replied to Bugeaters1's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
YES! Our starting lineup could have included two sophomores (Potts & Nisley), and two freshmen (Prince and Hargrove*) plus a graduating senior center. That might have looked really attractive to a big looking to transfer - think a Raegan Beers type - who might think "hmmm two sophs and two freshmen - all productive players - looking for someone to play in the middle ... I might fit in really well there". *Hargrove might have been #6 not a starter. That's a pleasant dream but I know I gotta accept the loss of Potts and move on. -

yep, that's the conundrum... you have to have one or two to get to the point that you can attract the next ones. Similar to the old "you have to have experience to play and playing is how you get experience".. This is why losing Potts was so devastating - she came close to being that player - to being a Leigha Brown type. With her, I think we would could have finished in the conference top four, gone maybe even three rounds in the tournament, and gained the nat'l attention needed to further upgrade recruitment. Hopefully, we will have her next year, but, failing a portal acquisition, then we will not have the post player to go with her. AM, IMO, would be much more effective (less double teaming) with Potts a threat to drive along the baseline or to stay put and hit the 3. Sigh. -

Agree 100% re Betts. And there is another example - Addison O'Grady at Iowa. Three and two years ago she was "tall and that's all". She was less effective on offense than was Kate Cain. Footwork did not put her in good shooting position and she seemed to lack "touch". Seeing her now ... looks like a different woman. Last game I saw for her she was something like 8 for 8 from the field and moved like a Gustafson. Just noticed ... O'Grady leads the conference in FG % at 67%! -

I hope not, but i fear that BP .... (others too, but they have not known as much HS success) .... is about to experience something entirely foreign to her - being pretty much out of the game early in the 2nd quarter and then just watching it get worse and worse all around her. If I recall it right, she was offered by UCLA. -
Tarleton State (5-5) VS. Nebraska (8-1) Game Thread

LongTimeFan said "I'm sure they work with Markowski taking shots around the basket all the time. She just doesn't have a good touch around the basket. I don't think you can teach touch. Her whole career has been that way. However without her we would have been in trouble and not won a lot of games ." What mystifies me is that she made a high % of those shots all thru high school. In her last game for state championship, she had a rotation of two or three girls taller than she but very thin (built like Coley) leaning/hanging/banging on her the entire game, collecting fouls, and she still scored around the rim. -

main things I hope to see: 1) Markowski getting it into the hoop - we need 50% + for conference play; 2) Hargrove taking another step forward - playing with confidence; 3) ditto for Bozan; 4) Weidner making explosive penetration cuts to the rim; 5) ditto for Moriarty -

I don't know what to think about Amy's turnstile substitutions. On the one hand I would like to see Rimdal play more. (She is an excellent shot maker from all three levels). But on the other hand, I would like to see more of Weidner, Hargrove and Bozan. And I don't know who I would want to see play less. This is just by far the deepest team I can ever remember having had here. I think Hargrove is going to be really really good. Markowski: I don't know what happened to her ability to get the ball to go thru the hoop. As a senior (without checking the stats), I think her percentage is lower than in her first three years. I don't understand her attempting the bank shot from 2-3 feet from the baseline vertically and 4-6 feet from the hoop horizontally. The angle is so oblique that It seems to me to be a very difficult shot and I can't remember other players even attempting it. Turnovers: Obviously Prince: keep shooting and more penetration drives. Weidner: I am really curious to see what others think of this ... Tho in limited quantity, I think we are now seeing something very close to the 2022 version. Could be wishful thinking.
