Infinitely better defensive plan so far today. Huge adjustment. -

I blame the L on coaching...

I watched it, yes. UMASS earned plenty of fouls underneath because they were getting to the rim so easily and getting second chance points. They got to the rim easily because we were picking them up so closely around the three point line and not switching on picks. If you square up take a step back, and let the ball handler come to you, the shots inside are going to be contested more effectively. Again, UMASS had no shooters, and they were catching the ball five feet from the rim against our 2-3. I can't see how this game could be considered anything other than a poor defensive (both playing and coaching) effort. TM knows the rules. It's time to adjust, not whine about it. Just out of curiosity… don't you think that they were able to get so many of those second chance shots and easy layups because we were playing soft when we had 5 guys with 4+ fouls with 10 minutes left in the game.Seriously you can't play your game when you are in foul trouble like that. They get in front of them it was a foul all day. Our players needed to back off or we would of had to finish the game with this line up Vooch Menke Parker Peltz Kurkowski All of our players would of been gone… simple as that. They were calling a foul "Every" possession, it was unadaptable at that point This is a good point, and this did happen. However, terms like "being in front" and "being set" are going to have be defined traditionally for these players. Each of our perimeter defenders is going to have to take a step back and live with allowing jump shots. We can't chase and fight through screens or we won't be in front, according to the rules. We're going to have to switch on almost everything and force a lot of 15 footers. I saw a ton of chasing, reaching in, and not being set for charges. To their credit, they're doing what they know out there. But I don't want to have the team that protests. I want the team that adjusts. I don't think it was so out of control that being set wasn't possible. The first teams to break decade-long habits (like bodying up and reaching 5 ft beyond the arc) are going to excel under these rules. -

Totally agree. It's like the new rules are in place to punish current players to pay for the sins of the rules becoming ignored over the years. This is certainly too much of an adjustment. It's like calling a carry or travel in the NBA. If they started enforcing those rules there, all hell would break lose. It's an interesting philosophical dilemma. Do you enforce the rules based on unwavering principles or bend them based on trends? CBB has chosen the former, and yikes! -

This hurts though because in previous years if ya left your feet its a foul. Its hard to block a shot when if ya swat its a foul... leave your feet... foul... make a little contact with the body... foul... This loss is not on coaching as what can you tell your players to do. All their lives they are brought up to take charges. If we are that gifted on offense, we may just have to start letting people score because that is what is going to come down to in the end. This game was not lost due to coaching. This game was lost for a variety of reasons, and one of those was our TO's, and part was reffing. Its hard to teach a dog not to jump for a treat when he has been taught to jump forever. I agree it will be hard, but it'll happen. Miles is a good coach. I'm confident we'll adjust. The 2-3 zone we threw at them was garbage. The entire purpose of a 2-3 is to NOT allow the ball inside, and they threw it inside repeatedly, right in the middle of the lane, for high percentage shots. They were 3-11 from 3, but 50% overall. That's bad coaching, IMO. That's just my opinion though. -

and I love Miles, so don't get it twisted. These new rules are in place to prevent handchecking and riding the side of a ball handler. They're also aiming to get rid of BS charge calls and moving screens. So adjustments have to be made defensively, and I didn't see anything indicating Miles and co. telling his players to do so. We have a tremendous opportunity to out-prepare our opponents based on the rules and have some initiative. Personally, I think this is a growing pain until the game gets used to it. It is was it is. A saw a lot of fouls that were called today that actually are fouls. There are crappy calls in every game, but I didn't see a whole lot that looked questionable according to the rules. There is no need to protest the rules by playing exactly the same way we played before. 1. Handchecking. Benny Parker needs to give the rest of the team a clinic on how to move your feet on the perimeter. This lanky reach-in AAU d isn't going to work anymore. You have to stay between your man and the basket. However, Miles is going to HAVE to implement switching out on the perimeter and forcing jumpshots. It's going to take GREAT discipline and effort to be a good defensive team under these rules. 2. Bodying up a ball handler. Again, no more of this riding the side of a player until they lose their balance and turn it over--that's a foul. It always has been, but it's being called now. Defenders are going to have to square up, move laterally, and force jump shots. No more pressuring in 1on1 situations beyond the foul line. We have to pack it in, almost like a matchup zone (or hell, run a matchup zone). 3. BS Charging calls. It's time to stop trying to draw charges and start trying to contest inside shots. Again, these are the rules, and I saw way to many stupid charges trying to be drawn by NU. There are blocked shots to be had which should lead to a lot of transition points since EVERYONE is going to be trying to get to the rack every play. Jump straight up, contest the shot. Pitchford should be a shot blocker. Why the hell is he being coached to take charges? 4. Box the hell out. With that many people going to the rim, there is going to be a ton of clutter underneathe the basket. This will be a huge challenge and probably the thing coaching has the least control over. Offensively, we're obviously going to be fine. We're very resourceful on that end. But, come on. Don't decide to keep your gameplan in protest. Change the damn thing. These are the rules now.
