After twenty-seven seasons in Lincoln, a Nebraska mascot has decided to explore other options.
Robbie Callahan of 365-247.com reported on Thursday that redpants junior mascot Lil' Red has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Red finds himself in a crowded sideline with incumbent mascot Herbie Husker likely to maintain his starting job for the 47th consecutive year. Illinois is seen as a landing spot for Red as they've been without a mascot since parting ways with Chief Illiniwek in 2007.
