  1. This board's been quiet lately so I'm gonna pose a question. What is your Mount Rushmore of the least talked about but best moments of Husker Basketball in the last 20 years? From the perspective of the amount of emotion you felt when it happened, regardless of where you were. For me this is what I can think of:

    1. Steve Harley finding Ade Dagunduro for the game-winning lay up against Creighton in 2008

    2. Jamel White with the put-back dagger against Oklahoma State in 2006

    3. Charles Richardson Jr vs Texas Tech as time expires at Texas Tech in 2008

    4. Joe McCray putting up 23 against Arkansas Pine Bluff in his debut (because of the great false hope this gave at the time)

Nothing came of these moments but still great to think back on

Maybe from a fan's perspective it looks that way, but I don't buy that at all. NU has competitors, they were competing out there.

Shoot, even Freddy was pissed today. These dudes hate losing, they are D-1 athletes.

For some reason they aren't able to get over the proverbial hump. Perhaps Saturday they will put it together to defeat Rutgers, it happened last season.

The biggest problem for NU right now is that I don't think anyone takes NU lightly, so there has seemed to be little chance for a 'sneak up' win to be found.

I’d love to have that perspective, but it’s worn off. I’ve given the players the benefit of the doubt up until about this point, but I’ve just gotten to the boiling point. The press conference has the same answers after every single game. Maybe it’s coaches, maybe it’s players, I don’t care. They’re all on the same team and very little changes seem to be in the works to get it fixed.

That's why losing to WIU (and having to come back from being down double digits to SHSU) was so devastating.  In a rebuild in the Big Ten, you simply can not lose those games (or let them be even close) to think you have even a remote chance.  I'm afraid our season has already ended, even before it got started.

We can hope for double digit wins this season and not too many transfers out at this point.  But that's about it.

Agreed that it's frustrating and at some point the expectation is those are the games where you'd look to see initial progress in a rebuild. However, and I may be in the minority here, if a loss to WIU in the first game of the year keeps us on the wrong side of the bubble come March, I would consider that progress.

  4. Just finished listening to the Jon Rothstein podcast that feature a Coach Hoiberg interview. He referenced an interaction he shared last year with John Beilein about the re-building process that was necessary when Fred took over. The quote from Beilein really stuck out:

"When I joined the Big Ten, there were 11 teams and 5 of them were going through a rebuild. When you joined the Big Ten, there were 14 teams and you're the only one going through a rebuild."

Building up a team is hard enough, but doing it in the toughest conference in college basketball is a daunting task. You have to recruit talent, develop players, create buy-in and trust between both teammates and coaches, and promote a cohesive unit in an era where kids transfer faster than ever before. You also have to deal with the emotions of college-aged kids experiencing beatdowns night in and night out with the talent they're stacked up against, when the door is always open to go somewhere where both team and individual success (at least stat-wise) may come a lot easier. All odds are stacked against you to succeed in a re-build process.

I think Fred has succeeded in a couple of the areas mentioned above, but I think even he is learning day-by-day how this is different from the rebuild at Iowa State. He's a very analytical coach, and I have no doubt he's evaluating every aspect of the program to get the puzzle pieces to fit together. This may take longer than we would've hoped initially, but I'm confident he'll get this figured out.

I just caught Rick Ross on "The View" (and ,no, this is not jimmy-coming-out-day, the wife was watching it). At any rate, he does seem like an unusual choice to initiate Hoiberg's first basketball kickoff event. Does anyone know who was in charge of lining up the musical guest? Was it the coach, the team, the UNL brass, the Pinnacle brass, Moos, Les Miles, Tim Miles, the rebounders...? Or was it just because Rick happened to be available for the right price and wanted some more publicity for his new autobiography? Just wondering? Does anyone know how many tunes he will be allowed to croon? Will the announcer be allowed to give Jean adequate warning regarding when to apply her ear plugs? And I did learn from Whoopie's insightful interview that Rick's Dad was a college professor and his Mom was a nurse. He also has a lot of sweet tattoos.

IMO, it is more important that this is a successful recruiting event than it is a fan event. Fans will come to see Fred and the new team, and if they choose to stay home then that's their own choice. But I don't think we lose any fans over a musical act with a questionable history. Again, if we do, so be it. I'd rather have recruits be excited about an event to come to. Rick Ross is coming for the players on the team. If we were choosing for Jean, it may as well be Michael Buble

I wouldn't say he would never go back to ISU but there is truth the what you said about the way things went down when he left. I don't think those things are beyond repair, time heals a lot. Just like time healed Fred's feelings on recruiting.

I do have some pretty good info though that says Prohm is locked into ISU, even with the Avery Johnson news. Alabama has been poking around, and I have been assured Prohm wants to stay put.

But, just like the pull Scott Frost felt, I don't want to go down the road of having to find all this out with an open Iowa State job. I also have info that if Prohm ever left they may want TJ as he has a great relationship with Pollard. As with anything, these coaching situations are about as fluid as they come.

If Prohm were to leave for Bama, I've also heard that TJ is the most likely replacement at ISU.

  7. Had these images sent to me by a friend with a creative pulse.. Thought they were pretty sweet so I wanted to share. I'm a big fan of our current Creme and Black uni's, but the standard home and away jerseys still don't do it for me. If we ever get away from Adidas, I wouldn't mind something like these getting a look... Any feedback or requests are welcome

    Sr. Copeland >>> So Pitchford

    So. Allen = So. Shields

This team is better than that team was.

I agree with your logic, but are you saying you think TA draws the matchup on Shields? Seems like the only logical mismatch that the 2014 team could exploit. Interesting hypothetical to say the least and fun to put the coach's hat on

  9. I know this has been brought up before and I don't want to make another thread, but since you brought up that 2014 team Norm I wanted to revisit this thought now that we're about halfway through this season.

    2018 Glynn > 2014 Tai

    2018 TA < 2014 Petteway

    2018 Palmer > 2014 Shields

    2018 Copeland > 2014 David Rivers

    2018 Roby > 2014 Walt P

If these two rosters faced each other it would be interesting to say the least, I'm guessing Glynn would man up on Terran and TA would get the match up on a young Tai. But point being is I'm confident that this 2018 team would win handily ~ 10-15 points. Needless to say, getting 'lucky' at the end of the year won't be needed this time around. I think we're feeling safe enough to comfortably talk about seeding after that Minnesota game on Feb. 13th

  10. Biggest takeaway for me today was the play of Glynn. And it had nothing to do with the stat line. He was full-go from the tip, completely dictating the pace that it appears we want to play. Constantly up in his man’s grill, flying up for rebounds, and I even caught him on several occasions talking some T to SELA guys.

Thats the kind of leadership I think we’re going to need from him to get where we want to go. I also think that energy has a big impact as to the little things, such as the amount of deflections and tips we were able to get on the defensive end. I’ve heard rumblings of this but I think today was proof for my eyes... Coach Gates is having a massive impact on this kids swagger and confidence. I love it.

Except that there is more to a player than what they do on the floor. MJ and Ed were not good teammates in the locker room and I'm not just talking about the fact they left. Team chemistry is important and those two were problems off the court.

I think it's important to make a distinction between "problems off the court" and team chemistry. If either of these 2 came to Lincoln they would have a place to stay and there would be no ill-will. However I will agree with you that attitudes may have been problematic and had an effect when it came to on-the-court basketball.

What a douche...I hope so badly we make it, then our fans troll his ass to no end for eternity.

This is absolutely pathetic garbage. I can understand not being in the field, but for his argument to be “if this were another team from a different conference, they wouldn’t even be in consideration”...... HEY ASS HAT, you’re right. A 22-10 team that plays in the SWAC would never be considered for an at-large bid. But we play in the BIG TEN, so no, we’re not just another team from a different conference. We won 13 games in the Big Ten, not the damn MEAC. The ignorance of this guy is beyond pathetic, and I get that he’s probably just doing it for clicks. But he crossed the line there, because there is absolutely zero point in making an invalidated argument against a good basketball team unless there is some agenda behind it. Screw ESPN and screw this grade A d-bag

  13. Really feels like a general lack of interest for this game tonight, which disappoints me and makes me really nervous. However, this team has proven me wrong time and time again this year, which makes me feel that tonight will be no different. Give me Glynn for 30 and 15 point dub to get everyone's excitements and hopes up again. S'go Skers

How is providence in so comfortably.  You just cannot get boatraced at home by DePaul this time of year is what common sense would tell me.

The worst part about this is I expect them to lose to Nova and then at Butler. But when the time comes "experts" will still have them in the tourney because "they're such quality losses".

Actually, in my opinion, I can't find much fault with how Lunardi has this.  We're only three slots below them so it's not like they are an 8 seed and we're in the first four out.  They have 1 more top 50 win, 2 more top 51-100 wins and six fewer games against the Top 200 RPI crowd.  I think it's perfectly defensible from a pure metrics standpoint.  However, I have watched Syracuse a couple of times over the past few weeks and just using my biased  "eye test", Nebraska is a more athletic and talented team and are clearly playing better currently.  We just have to hope the committee watches enough games to have healthy debates on what the computers are telling them as it relates to one team versus another versus what their eyes tell them.

I get what you're saying, and I guess my initial reaction was brought on more from the fact of pure worry. I thought that our outing against Minnesota would've moved the needle more, but alas we still have work to do. I do still find it irritating that even with that 1 more top 50 win, it just negates the two poor losses they have. It seems that bracketologists are more interested in who you've beat rather than who you've slipped up to

  16. Please for the life of me someone explain why Lunardi has Syracuse list ahead of us on his bracketology.

Hit this link to compare these two resumes.

    https://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/bracketology/team-comparison/NEB/CUSE

    Quick version:

    Nebraska: 1-5 vs. RPI (1-50); 2-3 vs. RPI (51-100); 7-0 vs. RPI (101-200)

Syracuse: 2-5 vs. RPI (1-50) *One of those is Buffalo...; 4-1 vs. RPI (51-100); 8-2 vs. RPI (101-200) Losses to 116 Wake Forest and 140 Georgia Tech.

I don't see what some bracketologists favor over the others. Because they have 1 more top 50 win it just negates those poor losses they have? We are doing what we can with the cards that were dealt to us, how can we be faulted for that?

  17. I gotta be honest, the situation we are in right now scares me. I see other teams on the bubble that are in similar positions as us but it seems like they always have one advantage on us in at least one category. Whether it be Tier I wins, RPI, remaining ranked opponents left, etc.... Like a lot of you have said, there's more than enough time for those bubbles to burst, and being realistic here we don't have a great track record of finishing off the season strong either. We have a lot of work left to do, but I am confident this year that we can hold up our end of the deal. The thing that I believe that is being overlooked to be in our favor is our head coach. Whether or not you like him, TM is an engaging figure and draws a crowd. He seems to be very much liked in the national media and has a history of drawing attention, whether good or bad. And it doesn't hurt having friends in the media such as Andy Katz, who will broadcast to the country that he believes in us. A lot of folks don't tune in to BTN, and they probably think of Nebraska as same old same old. But having members of the national media give us attention and exposure gives me a bit of confidence that when comparing two equal bubble teams at the beginning of March, who knows what the deciding factor will be. It doesn't hurt having a great traveling fan base and an attention-grabbing head coach. After all, this is all just a business...
