  1. Someone will need to step up and be “the guy” in order for this to be a tournament team.  Terran Petteway willed his team to the tournament and we need someone with that type of attitude next year. I think the obvious choice is Trey. I hope he has a monster senior year and shows this stellar recruiting class what it takes to win in the Big Ten so we can keep it rolling into 2022-23.

  2. Xavier coach Travis Steele on CJ Wilcher (from goxavier.com):

"C.J. is the best shooter that I saw in the class of 2020 in the entire country. C.J. can make shots from all over the floor, whether in the post, off the catch or off the dribble. He also really knows how to play and he knows how to use his body. He sees things on the floor and can make his teammates better. He is a great shooter, but he is a lot more than that. He's a scorer and he brings a different dimension on the offensive end."

Why do you think Lakes will be back?  Shamiel and Banton both will likely be back next year along with Lat, Derrick, Adre.  The rest on your list are all 50/50 on if they return.

The plan before the year was to sit and work on his weaknesses so that he can be a reliable player for next year. He basically has done that, plus a few spot minutes here and there and that one game that he caught fire.  I’m not sure why that plan would have changed.

I really hope the McGowens brothers are not 50/50...

  4. Does anybody think Kobe or Thor comes back next year for their extra year of eligibility?  Thor doesn't seem likely.  We were pretty good his freshmen year, but since then he has been on some pretty bad teams.  I'm not sure why he would want to stick around.

Kobe is interesting.  He's not going pro.  Is he working on a masters?  I could see him playing one more year and be another shooter off the bench.

That leaves us possibly 1 over the scholarship limit and I could see any of the following leaving:

Wood - last minute fill-in which rarely work out.  Remember this was supposed to be Kobe King

Arop - does not fit in any position, even in a "positionless" system

Yvan - quickly losing minutes to Andre

Shamiel - although, where would he go from here? 4th school in 5 years?

Teddy - wild card.  Will he try for the G league or overseas?

Banton - is he happy here?  Lately I can't tell...

Can anybody name the last year we didn't have a scholarship player transfer?  looking through rosters, I think it was 2004-05.

This leaves Trey, Lat, Derrick, Andre, and Lakes (he was supposed to sit this year anyways) as the "most likely to return" guys along with Bryce, Keisei, and Wilhelm.

It also seems like the coaches are recruiting for at least one more spot.  Will be an interesting off-season, as always.

  5. Some good nuggets from Steve Sipple’s article:

Transitioning to hoops: Keep an eye on Lat Mayen.

That's the buzz I'm hearing as the Nebraska men's basketball team pushes through the early stages of its return to workouts. The 6-foot-9, 205-pound Mayen, a transfer from Chipola (Florida) College (by way of TCU), apparently has an effective jump shot and enough of an all-around game to crack Fred Hoiberg's starting lineup, if not become the team's best player this coming season. He'll have two seasons of eligibility at NU.

I'm also intrigued by what I'm hearing about Kobe Webster, a 6-foot transfer from Western Illinois, and Teddy Allen, a 6-5 transfer from Western Nebraska Community College. Webster shows up on WIU film as a tough competitor and he's evidently shooting the ball well here. Meanwhile, Allen's game isn't all that pretty, but he's living up to his reputation as an effective scorer.

  6. I think it’s officially safe to start predicting starting lineups now that the roster is (probably) final.

    My prediction:

    PG Mack 35 mpg

SG Green or Burke 30 mpg

    SF Cheatham 30 mpg

    PF Kavas 25 mpg

C Yvan or Cross 25 mpg

6 Green or Burke 20 mpg

    7 Stevenson 15 mpg

8 Yvan or Cross 15 mpg

    9 Curtis 5 mpg

    10 Thor & walkons 0-1 mpg

    RS Arop

    RS Banton

    RS Walker

9 man rotation with plenty of depth, besides PG.  I don’t think these grad transfers came here to come off the bench...
