  1. Women's basketball rosters generally vary in size from 12-15. D1 BCS Women's teams generally get more scholarships than men to help catch up the gap in overall student athletes between genders caused by football. Same reason more schools have women's soccer than men's. -- The problem with 14 or 15 on a women's team is it is hard to keep everybody happy. On men's team plenty of guys are willing to be walk ons at 13, 14 and 15 spots because they practice daily and enjoy the journey. Women's teams at a high level tend to practice against men a lot of the time which makes it super hard to even get reps in practice for women 11 thru 15. Thus, a lot of women's teams won't fil the roster past 12 or 13 even if they can. ------ Additionally, you have to remember women grow younger and there are less late bloomers, etc. Almost every women playing in the big 10 was a 4 year hs starter and all state at least 3 years. There are guys in the nba that didn't start hs til their sr year because they grew late etc. As a result, the guys "fish bowl" is more crowded so they are more used to having to fight for playing time, etc. Women who play in college were always the best on their team growing up. Thus when they are suddenly a walk on or scholarship kid at 12-15 and rarely play in games they don't handle it as well and get disgruntled quicker. Just a fact.
  2. Clearly this was a smooth transition and coach Goehle deciding to pursue ministry full time. We have a great coach and staff that represent NU very well. We had an excellent team last year pre injuries to Sam and the acl to weidner. We still were decent even after losing them. We had hardest schedule in history of NU womens bball. Played 9 games against teams that were a 3 seed or better I believe -Indiana Ohio state iowa Maryland and Virginia tech. That’s essentially 9 games against top 12 teams. Plus Drake Creighton Mississippi state and ku were all good too. Plus whole big 10 league was good for the most part. Nobody on this board wants to win more than the players and coaches. They would be first to say they want to and expect to do better. But some of the comments on this board at times are not well founded and speculation that we would go into recruiting season a coach short was nonsense. They have known about this transition and the new coach for several weeks I am sure. We have a fun product. Enjoy it
  3. I have no idea whether Allison has had her acl repair surgery or not; but it isn’t uncommon to give it a few weeks post injury before the surgery to let the swelling go down so they can see structures better when inside the knee repairing it etx
  4. What a great game and great win. Really helps the tourney resume if we can play well in big 10 play —. Feel terrible for the kids about all the injuries. Gotta keep battling Gbr
  5. Kansas women have best team they have had in a while. Thumped Arizona on the road. Great opportunity for the Huskers to play a ranked team from out of conference at home. A win would be a big boost to possible ncaa tourney resume

  7. karl that rationale is backwards i believe re: better recruits not wanting to come. We could lose a very elite kid now and then because they want to play 38-40 min but the teams that only play 6-7 kids are more apt to have smaller rosters or higher turnover because 7-8 aren't playing at all and leave. I do believe the playing time issue gets used against us by some schools that play less kids with recruting the "elite" kids. However, we have been more willing to play kids 30 plus minutes the last couple of years. It also allows us to avoid quite as severe of graduation and injury dips as places that only play 7-8 kids because the subs have real experience. Injuries has been the biggest issue on smaller rosters, and then Sam's class was just bizzare stuff. One left to return home for boyfriend and one left to play NAIA and volleyball for her hs coach who took an NAIA job even though she was a starter and played a ton. Womens bball is harder to keep players happy then mens. Boys have always had a crowded fish bowl and they grow late in hs often so they always have to claw their way up. Girls (and worse girls parents) don't handle not playing much well because they were all full grown by 9th grade and fishbowl is small. There are very few late bloomers. Most college girls bball players started 4 years of hs or at least 3 and most were all state at least 3. Plus with mens practice squads kids 10-15 often don't even get many reps in practice. At least boys 10-15 on a mens team get full intensity practice all the time. Some womens teams will only take 12-13 on their roster just because of moral issues for the reasons stated above. However, big football schools usually have 15. I believe they get more pressure to have a full roster form AD dept. because of title 9 issues. Mid majors with d1aa football or no football tend to have smaller rosters on avergage. Just my two cents.
  8. I understand the frustration. But We have the big 12 freshman of the year. There was only 1 of those. That constitutes a star. Just a young one. Freshman to soph is biggest jump year for most kids. We have two major freshman contributors and 2 other very good freshman. We will be fine. Need to see what Sam and Bella do, and add a portal kid. Hopefully the Texas tech kid can get health and add an athletic shooter. Half of the ncaa tourney teams lost in the last two days. Wasn’t only us. We were good enough to win a ncaa tourney game or two. Got a tough seed despite NET rating and played not great vs gonz. Those two factors bit us. We will be just fine moving forward.
  9. Redsteve. — I believe so
  10. Ava Jones from Nickerson ks de-committed from Ariz state.
  11. Missouri western upsets the 1 seed fort hays on its on court to advance to elite 8.
  12. Rachel Blackburn is an assistant at a d2 adams state in Colorado I believe, Hailey Sample has been an assistant at d2 McKendree State for several years and jas Cincore is an assistant at a small d1 in Illinois working under former Illinois Univ coach I believe. There are a bunch more former Huskers coaching I believe including lindsey moore but those are the recent grads I know of
  13. Went to d2 regional in hays this weekend. Kearney was there and has a great team and had a great season. They are well coached and have good kids. They lost to Missouri western last night in round of 32 I would expect kearney head coach to get a d1 coaching job within the next year or two— coach Williams sister was there. She Coaches d2 Minnesota state. They lost to 1 seed for hays in first round. Hays has a ton of Nebraska players and on roster including some good lincoln kids as their head coach won a national title I believe at Hastings so he has lots of Neb hs recruiting connections. Coach Williams sisters’ assistant coach is former Husker Janae Morton. It was fun to see her there. — Fort hays is the 1 seed and hosting the regional. They will play missouri Western tomorrow night with winner getting a trip to elite 8 in Birmingham Alabama. Mo west associate head coach is Emily Wacker (aka Woody). They r the 7 seed and making first sweet 16 appearance since 1997. She is in her third season at mo western
  14. Who wasn’t at the last game? I didn’t watch
  15. I have been on this board for 8 years and never once commented about officiating because I don’t believe in it. Move on next play control the controllables etc. but if I was n attendance today I would be ripping ass. We just got whistled for about 11 fouls n 2nd qtr and Iowa flipping zero. They should have had 3 minimum. One right before Markowskis 2nd foul and 1 on Clayton’s layup at then end for sure. If foul on markowksi gets called she gets 2 FTs and doesn’t get her 2nd foul out of frustration. —. Hard for big 10 officials to have much credibility with that shit. — that was my once in a lifetime officiating rant. I am over it.
  16. Matt made the comment early on that Maine was tough because they are a good program that regularly makes the NCAA tourney (they were in Austin in same quadrant as us last time we were in NCAA tourney). They just got wiped out with transfers, injuries and graduation. At the time he made the comment early he wouldn't have game prepped yet and most likely didn't know about all departures Maine had. -- That said we have a chance to be really good. This is Coach Williams most talented team. We are deep even with Dillard's season ending injury and Micole being out for the game.
  17. Dillard had hip surgery last year. Was back practicing and tore acl about 2-3 weeks ago. Probably hasn’t even had surgery on it yet. That’s why the big brace
  18. It also makes sense because she likes attention and Texas now has a great coach in her back yard, and Baylor men won a NC so it isn't all about her anymore. -- She can flat coach with the best, but make no mistake two reasons I listed played into her decision. I will be curious who they hire. Guessing Jeff Walz will get a call, or maybe Dawn Staley but not sure Baylor's ultra conservative roots would go that route. Don't know if either would leave anyway. Georgia or Az coaches may be possibilities also.
  19. The Texas tech transfer who got hurt and missed the year is supposed to be an excellent shooter I think. And she is atheltic. We haven’t had an atheltic 3 point shooter at guard wing spot for a while. Nice to be able to shoot and guard
  20. If Helms could have helped at all she would have played more. No ifs and or buts about it.
  21. I got to watch Kendall play several times his summer. Her body will draw natural comparisons to nicea but their games are way different. Kendall is a quick and a good athlete but not nearly as bouncy or fast from end to end as Nicea I don’t think — in fact after watching her several times last summer she was “less athletic than I thought she would be based the eye test”. However she has a very high b-ball iq and is a very natural passer and has more “grit and toughness” than her physical appearance made me anticipate. What really impressed me was her iq and vocal leadership. She isn’t a Pg but almost a point forward. Bad comparison but a little like a Danny manning type game. She is very charismatic and should also be a GREAT recruiter for he Huskers. Other kids will want to play with her
  22. Amazing the difference when u have kids that like each other and don’t care who gets the credit. Great job by the ladies executing the game plan. Gotta give the coaches and ladies credit. Girls r playing hard sharing the b-ball and cheering for each other.
  23. FYI— NUtball the women practice against a men’s practice squad every day normally (not sure if they r during covid) so that they r used to higher athleticism. That’s pretty standard in bcs women’s b-ball.
  24. I want to clarify something on my last post because after re reading it I think it sounded more harsh than I meant it. I was not referring to Brown. She is a freshman who because of injuries got thrown in the mix and has given all she can and done well. The issue is brown porter and scoggins r very similar physically. It’s hard to have 3 kids like that and when frequently u have to play 2 at a time because of injuries. They r all 3 great teammates and the bench enthusiasm they bring is refreshing.
  25. There has been a lot of criticism on this board. Some fair and some very unfair. But today was fun. Great game plan and girls hit a few clutch shots to overcome some bad luck with Sam getting hurt late — I honestly feel like if any 2 or even 1 of the Wing guards (Kissenger Dillard brady or Clayton ) who all would have been n the season plans in June plays all season and we would be significantly better. As a unit our bigs are reasonably solid and Sam is very solid. We don’t get much positive out of the other guard spot. They can all 3 shoot fairly well but they r not athletic at all and more importantly is the fact that they don’t realize what they can’t do. Specially they try to drive in traffic, shoot floaters dribble by people against press etx. A Small unathletic kid that can shoot well can help if they don’t turn it over and move the ball but knowing what u can’t do is as important as knowing what u can do.—- great win. Still going to be some struggles this especiallh if porter or Clayton don’t play. However if u return your 4 bigs and add 2 or 3 healthy wing guards/off guards we would be way better
