Wasn't able to watch the game last night, so watching it now.
    1st half:
-First 4 minutes were the best we've played all year. If Keon's minute allotment in the rotation is 8-12 minutes, I'm good with him getting those minutes at the start of each half. In the first 3 minutes, he forced two turnovers, had a rebound on a good block out and had a nice contest on a shot (I actually thought he tipped it but wasn't credited with a block). I felt like he set the tone defensively from the tip, the bench players just didn't keep it up. He's going to be a great 3 and D player eventually.
    - Bryce had a George Gervin finger roll. That was sweet.
    - Agree with what someone said earlier. Derrick needs to give the same effort on the boards and defensively as he did last year. He's not doing that right now. But playing well offensively.
    - The offense itself seems fine. We've gotten wide open threes within the offense from Keisei (2), Bryce (2-3), Keon (2), Wilhelm (1), CJ (2), Lat (several). Just missed almost all of them.
    - CJ's defense is poor, but I appreciate his effort blocking out. We need his shooting and he's the best on the team at moving without the ball right now.
    - There are only two ball stoppers on the team at this point. Verge (it's just going to happen with him, but he's playing pretty darn good now) and Lat, who of all people should not be a ball stopper. The turnovers and missed wide open threes are bad enough. But when he catches and just holds the ball and jab steps for 8 seconds, it's frustrating and a possession killer. My old high school coach would not allow that from anyone, let alone a guy who's not a threat to create.

    2nd half:
-Another solid first 4 minutes defensively. Only gave up 3 points before the first sub came in. I like Keon. You don't have to worry about effort or dumb mistakes with him. He's shooting the ball with confidence and they'll start falling.
    - Bryce and Verge playing very well. And EFFICIENT.
    - Wilhelm and Ed both really bad in this one. Is Wilhelm not being coached? It's kinda embarrassing how confused he is after laying someone out and getting called for a foul.
    - A positive: Our guards are doing a much better job of finishing at the rim. Overall the team was 22/28 on 2FG's.
    - Bryce, CJ, Verge and Walker played as well as you could ask them to, offensively. Tenn St. stayed in the game because almost everyone else played just poorly enough, and about 5-6 of their made threes were prayers they just threw up there that went in.
    - People might not remember, but our three point shooting improved dramatically over the course of each of the past two seasons. Everything will look different if/when that happens. Free throws and 2P% have been substantially better this year. We're 71% on "close 2's" this year, compared to 55% and 54% in the previous two years. 73% from FT's compared to 64% and 61%.

I feel like I'm the only one who still has hope for a fun year. To the people who think we're not running an offense or sharing the ball, we really are. Turn on a college basketball game any given night and you'll see stagnant offense. We're getting shots at the rim, free throw line and wide open threes. It's going to turn around. Maybe lower your W/L expectations. My preseason hope was that we'd go around .500 this year. I had no tourney expectations. We won 7 freaking games each of the last two years.

One more thing... the Verge that was 4-5, 0 threes taken, 6-6 at the line, 6 boards, and 4 assists is the Verge that we can reallllllly use every game.

He still tends to dribble himself into a little too much trouble at times, but he's getting a lot better.

Me too. He's still holding the ball too long, but if he's gonna buy into playing point, actual point, I don't mind seeing him involved.
I think a Lotta ppl including myself didn't really watch much sundevil tape on him, or heed the warnings of asu fans who know well the high volume selfish version of verge.
At the same time I think there's a good side of him that can score in the flow of the offense but really facilitate mainly. And I think Fred is trying to cultivate that.
Imo, maybe I'm a little extreme here,  but I want coach to bench players who refuse to play unselfish. Gotta teach them. They gotta learn the hard way sometimes.

In a perfect world he'd be our primary ball handler who drove to the hoop and sprayed balls out to guys.  At no point has he shown any capacity to do this.  His one assist on the season was a nice series of bounce passes between him an Eduardo on a drive.

Some of it might be that we're running all these guys out there after a few months instead of having to sit for an entire year.

Lat's number of dribbles is limited due to the fact that every third dribble is a turnover.

I am starting to wonder if Fred is suffering from Royce White syndrome.  As in, he believes he can take an immensely talented headcase, get them to buy into the system, and they become a force leading your team to great heights because he did it before.

    I've always called it ".5"

So, let's say the ball is on the right wing, below the free throw line or level with the block. Any pass that goes left is a "negative" pass. As in, it's going away from the hoop. We would yell that we want the ball in out of hands for ".5 seconds," on all negative passes and get it reversed to the other side. So we constantly talked about reversing negative passes as soon as possible. When you make it routine, it gets the ball out of the hands of selfish people quickly and to the other side of the court.

Of course, some teams are "hand in the passing lane," or, "denial," defenses. So you have to be careful of swinging it through the top of the key without looking. So we would then work on immediate actions or ball fakes on all negative passes. The ".5" rules still applies - as you're catching it, you have .5 seconds to swing it, pass fake it, enter into the post, or drive. Either way ball has to move away from where it came from.

Hoiberg’s offense absolutely requires ball movement to create open shots for the shooters on the floor for Nebraska.

When you have a PG that is a high volume dribbler, that kills ball movement, and since the rest of the players on the court aren’t touching the ball frequently, that lulls them to sleep, so they don’t move without the ball, which means that they don’t get open shots in rhythm and they aren’t attempting many back door cuts to the basket, because they don’t expect to get the ball anyway. It turns into a bunch of standing around and watching the dribbler.

And when they aren’t getting touches on offense, which lulls them to sleep, that carries over to a lack of intensity on defense. So it kills them on offense and defense.

Verge’s stats don’t tell the whole story in regards to how much his play and decision making really hurts this team. When a team rebounds as poorly as Nebraska, the ridiculous drives to the basket resulting in poor, low percentage, contested shots at the rim are effectively turnovers in the way that they hurt the team.

And when the primary ball handler consistently chooses to take those shots, rather than distributing the ball to all of the shooters that Hoiberg has assembled on this team, it sabotages the ability of the rest of Nebraska’s players on the court to play to their potential. Nebraska’s margin for error is so thin that they can’t afford to have all of their players failing to play to their potential. Until Hoiberg gets a distributor at PG, it doesn't matter how much he upgrades the rest of the talent on this roster.

And all of those things kill the crowd energy in Pinnacle Bank Arena, which negates what should be a pretty substantial home court advantage for the Huskers.

As many have already said, and as I probably said 500 times under my breath during the past 3 games, Verge is not the answer at point guard. Not even close. But simply blaming him is taking the easy way out, and I feel bad doing that.

This falls squarely on the coaches. They brought him in and handed him a job that he clearly is not ready to handle or is incapable of handling. They allow him to do the things he does on the floor that we see during games. I have to imagine they allow him to do those same things during practice, because I cannot imagine he's doing one thing in practice and flipping 180 degrees in games. And they have been unable to convince him to change what he's doing because it's better for both him and the team.

This is a coaching issue more than it is a Verge issue.

Right. We don’t even need a point guard that creates for others. Just need one to make the first freaking pass to initiate the offense. We were fun to watch last year when Dalano got benched and Teddy left. Trey made the first pass and Kobe, Thor and Lat played the .5 basketball that Hoiberg wants - within half a second after catching the ball, either shoot it, pass it or make a straight line drive to the rim. Why it’s so hard for our coaches to get some players to play that way, I don’t know.

man, I don't know how many times I have thought that if someone told me 4 years ago what a bust both of those guys would have been how much I would have laughed at them....and yet, I have a hard time believing this team won't struggle to get to 10 wins right now.  So maybe 25 wins in 3 years?  No way Fred makes it through that.  Tre might be out for god knows how long on top of everything else.  Just disappointing.  Football and basketball both are making me look forward to the next thing earlier and earlier every year.  Football isn't even officially over yet and I'm already past hoops and on to checking the baseball signing class.

Not just better, but more poised and mature as a freshman than Verge as a 5th year senior.

On the radio this morning, the talk was about how this was a culture game, more than anything. Creighton is young and talented. I don't think they're less talented than NU. They're probably more talented, but they're less experienced in some ways, too. But CU replaced nearly every top contributor from last year's team and they were the ones that handled that atmosphere better last night. That goes back to the culture that has been established there. I think that's what Coach Fred *wants* to develop here, too. He touted that as why he ran his system instead of trying to win games in year one and praised the players on the roster for laying that foundation. But Derrick Walker it he only one that was in the program at the time. And he hasn't been all that great so far this season. Hard to hold together a culture if you're turning over the roster so much. Hopefully some continuity over the next couple of years will get it there, but it's not there yet. Coach Mac has a decade of track laid.

    - I liked most of what I saw from Wilcher last night.
    - I liked what Webster brought to the floor. I thought he brought a calming affect when things were spiraling out of control in the first half.
    - Not sure I agree with Ed being ready to start. He's got some talent, but he's also still very raw. Not sure what you do in the paint. The smaller lineup was the one that brought the team back, so maybe somewhat diminished roles for the front court is something we see more of.
    - I wonder where McPherson is in his development. I wonder if he gets a look with Trey going down.
    - And man, you just have to feel for Trey. I was liking how the offense looked when he was running the show, too.
    - Thought Bryce got a big lesson in high major basketball last night. Excited to see how he adjusts, because I think he will.
    - I did like that the team fought back after being down big. I hope that serves as a marker for them that they're capable. As someone else said in the thread, I do think there's a good team somewhere on this roster. But the start of this season and night has sure been a gut punch.

My assessment of Verge hasn’t changed.  5-15 with 1 assist.  I am starting to wonder what Fred is looking for in a PG.  I honestly thought our offense would resemble what Creighton looked like.  I don’t recall any of his ISU teams looking like this.  I felt year 3 is the year he needs to show significant progress.  Early returns not good but it is a long season….But I think the Verge experiment needs to end for us to make a move.

someone said it earlier but I can’t believe this is where we are after hiring Frost and Hoiberg.  Thank goodness we have Will Bolt.

After sleeping on it, I do not feel any better about this team or the direction of the program. In fact, I might feel a little worse.

During last night's presser, Hoiberg said he was still 100% confident in Alonzo Verge. This, despite a group of fans large enough to make "boos" heard in the arena feeling the same way many of us do about his hero-ball approach. There are times to stand by your beliefs but when it's obvious to even the casual fan that a change needs to be made, you now have a credibility problem. Just ask the football coach how things have worked out with his 4-year QB.

I hate feeling this way after 3 games, but here we are again. I don't recall being more excited about a team than I was for this year and until now, I've not questioned my belief that Fred would get this done. But as the years of failure and disappointment continue to pile up, the emotional investment gas tank hits empty pretty quickly.

I'll watch until I can't take the dribbling exhibitions any longer. I will hope it turns. But my expectations at this point have hit zero and my belief in Fred is trending down.

I said both of these after the 1st game.  You either need a pg to run this system or adapt to the players you have.  How they cant get a true pg in 3 years is mindblowing.  It seems more about getting high recruits instead of players that fit for what you are doing.  Honestly I dont see more then 10-12 wins out of this team.
