Going back to the GPA issue - I attended the parents' meeting for track and field at our school this week.  The head coach stood up front and said that if a student has a D or F in ANY class, then they are sitting out and having to attend academic help sessions.  He spent a lot of time talking about academics.

Our school has an eligibility rule.  Any kid with two or more classes below a 63% (D) can't participate in any extra curricular activities (athletics, drama, dances, etc).
If 63% is a D, what do you have to do to fail?
    Sixty or below.

Call me old school but I think you should have to reach a descent freethrow shooting percentage before you can pass a class.

  2. I thought nothing of just loading up and driving from KC on game day, knowing full well I would be able to walk up and get tickets (often very good seats in the B section) without even blinking.

Glad I got my season tickets.  Wish I had decided to be nicer to myself and get ones in a better section.  Now I'm not sure I'll be able to upgrade anytime soon.

I posted this somewhere else but proud of my son for his perspective. He asked last Saturday to go to the game like we had decided many game days before. When I told him that now that the team is winning you can't just walk up and get tickets. His response  was something like, "That's not fair. Anyone that actually watched Nebraska lose to Maryland Baltimore Shore Coast State or whatever in person should be able to get tickets to any game they want to.

Pair of portable shot clocks:  $2000

Pair of wireless portable shot clocks:  $2635

Not having to watch high school kids "hold for the last shot" for the last 2 minutes of every quarter:  Priceless.

Don't forget you have to have somebody be the shot clock operator.  Some might volunteer to do so, but most of the time you have to pay that person too.  So that's an added cost.

Just have the guy who runs the possession arrow take care of the shot clock.  He's already sitting there getting paid.  You don't need a whole separate guy.

That guy is already running the clock and keeping score

We need a shot clock in NE high school ball.

That certainly wouldn't be a bad place to start...

Because there is nothing better than bad basketball played faster?

Pace and lack of success are not one & the same.

I'm not talking about success. The better the player the faster you can play. The games seems slower to those who have a high skill level. There are very few D & C teams that are ready to speed up their game. And while I'm at it there are quite a few A & B as well. I saw a little bit of Aurora this year and they certainly are not ready to play any faster. I'm not talking about success. When two bad teams play one of them has to win. Players and teams with lower skill levels do not need to be pushed to play faster and I would say that would cover the majority of high school teams in the state at all levels.

  6. I can't fix his shot but he can. That's the Catch-22. He's not making buckets because he lacks confidence. With confidence he will be shooting fine. He needs to make buckets to gain confidence. Hence, the catch.

But maybe we've created this problem in our own minds. I could look it up (but won't),  is his shooting percentage really that much lower than last years. Might he just not be taking near as many shots?

I'm sure he would like to wake up....but he's just not good. He gives us nothing at this point.

Life is not all or nothing. We weren't great yesterday and we aren't terrible tonight. Ray's playing great defense and is always one of the hardest workers in the motion offense. For one thing he is not getting anywhere the number of shots as last year, partly because he isn't getting any sets run for him this season. That is not his role this year. It would be great for him to have a break out game. It may or may not happen, he has always been a streak shooter. Ray can play a bit. He has his weaknesses but I'm sure he could destroy anyone on this message board. He has dealt extremely well with going from being the go to guy to accepting his role off the bench. Most, and I mean most D-1 players couldn't deal with that. I'm sorry you feel bad about THEIR loss tonight, but insulting Ray is just childish. If you ever played I'll bet you were a finger pointer there as well. From what I can see, Ray is a great teammate. I'm sure he feels much worse than you because he is physically, mentally and emotionally invested as part of the team. As a fan I'm sorry they lost as well. Ray plays hard. He plays with heart. He is one of our guys. I'm rooting for him. Us Always.
I stand by my statement. Right now Rey is not good. And hasn't been for some time. I realize we don't really have any other options and are just going to have to hope he can hit a few shots down the stretch.

No you don't stand by your statement, you sit behind it at the key board with a fake name. Standing by it would be saying it to his face. I would never call anyone "not good" unless I could personally beat them. If I can beat you, you aren't good. You can't beat Ray. Ray is a D-1 basketball player on what we hope is a bubble team. They don't let "not good" players play on those teams. He knows his role because it has been spelled out to him by his coach. I'm not part of the team but I take exception to someone who obviously thinks putting the ball in the hoop is the only thing that makes you a good player insult a team player on what I like to think of as my team.

  9. My son last Sunday, "Hey dad let's go to the Nebraska game."

                            "No tickets"

                            "We can just walk up"

"Not any more. Nebraska is winning and tickets are now hard to get"

"That's not fair. Anyone that watched Maryland-Eastern-Baltimore-Coast-State or whoever

beat Nebraska in person should be able to get tickets to any game they want to go to."

  10. There are plenty of drills that you can use to work on foot speed. Just like lifting though, it needs to be done on a regular basis to have improvement.

There are lots or rope ladder and plyometric stuff but what gets overlooked a lot when discussing speed and quickness (two totally different things) imo is getter stronger. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. You have to be able to drive your foot into the ground with force or you will get no return no matter how quickly you pick it up. Lots of SAQ guys are now talking about shorter strides so you can keep you foot on the ground longer to create more force. You feel slower but move faster. Bottom line is your right, there are lots of things you can do to improve speed and quickness.

I'm glad Ubel still follows the program but not sure it's fair to single him out as many former players still follow the program since their playing days.  Ubel is probably just more vocal on twitter and social media about it then other former players.  I would suspect that many former players still have a very vested interest in the program.  It is great to hear some praise from those who came before this year.

Part of the reason that he is being singled out is his dedication to watch the games. Practically none of our games are at a convenient time for him in Belgium.

Yeah, Ubelgium is watchin' Nebrasketball at 4 in the morn on a regular basis... dedicated to his alma mater that's making him proud! GO BIG UBES!

Impressive kid. I DVR games that start at 9:00 in the morning so I don't have to "rush" around.

Honestly I prefer to be about 40 minutes behind real time so I can ff past commercials and half time.

  12. First off I start my post with I know the guy and watching from home knew immediately it was him. I text him and asked if he heckled the player, he said no the coach was thrown out. Needless to say guys it's been a long night for him and he knows it wasn't a smart decision. His name will not be divulged so do not ask me.

Don't need to know who it is, but I am curious if he heckled the coach, the player or their team in general?!

He legitimately thought the head coach was thrown out and not a player that he was yelling at until I told him no it wasn't a coach. I'm sure we've all had a night we regret and that's his tonight. He feels horrible. He's a die hard Husker fan that just had too much before the game. Trust me he was reprimanded later and that's it.

I'm sure we've all made our share of mistakes but if he mistook Brandon for Chambers he had WAY too many before the game.

  13. Doc's flaw was his own emotion and lack of offensive understanding. He thought that shoving needed offensive talent on the bench for games at a time was a good way of showing them who's boss. Nevermind that true scorers like Petteway need some leash in order to be true scorers. Petteway would be 1/2 of the player he is under Sadler, mostly due to fear of being benched for a quick shot or aggressive drive that turned into a turnover.

Sadler's own flaws doomed him into failure, and made NU unattractive to even kids in state or Sioux City. I won't mention a certain German lad that had a few offensive skills of his own that Sadler didn't harness, and are now being enjoyed by another program.

Miles doesn't have these flaws, in fact, he is rather liberal with his leash, and scorers are now confident.

Have you ever coached a jr. high girls team?

  14. I get a kick out of Miles leaning back on the scorer's table waiting for the big screen replay on questionable calls. Like he's just double-checking to make sure he's right before he blows a gasket. Some calls last night were horrible. Was not surprised that Illinois was already in the bonus with 12 minutes left in the game considering they were playing offense on Groce's half of the court.

That was on the carrying call on Petteway (that I also disagreed with) but then they never showed the replay. #bigscreenproblems. Of course Miles will get to see the film and I won't. But the bad ref made that call and Miles might have wanted to pick up his 1st T if the replay had shown the call was a bad one.

You were probably at the game Norm. I couldn't make it so I watched on TV and Miles leaned back and looked at the big screen on a handful of calls, not just the carry (which was a good call, btw, and one that they got Illinois for later as well). BTN showed him after every questionable call and he did it all the time on blocks/charges, handchecks, etc. It was pretty funny. Of course I was losing my mind, so kudos to him for being at least more patient than I am.

Side note: last night was the first time I can remember this season our opponent getting called for an illegal screen. It seems to me that we get called for that at least once a game.

I hate that call. No, it wasn't the first. There was at least one other. But illegal screens happen all the time. All the time. And it only gets called at strange moments. Like in the last minute against Oregon a few years back they called one on Brandon Ubel. Like really? They've been doing it to us all game and then you choose this moment to suddenly care about illegal screens?

Minnesota was another game where they did it just all of the time. That Smith kid or whatever his name was who scored about 30 on us, Ray was chasing him around screens all night long and their screener would throw a hip into Ray or move over into him to give that guy just enough separation to get off a 3 pointer. And that's how they drew closer towards the end.

Damn frustrating when they call us for that given how often it gets ignored. And we generally get the short end because our offense isn't predicated on curling shooters around screens to get them open for a catch-and-shoot 3. And when your chaser gets picked by a guy who throws a hip into him, freeing up the shooter, that's supposed to be a foul. Right?

The sad part is, this is how it is with most calls. A lot of things will go uncalled until the coach asks for it to be watched, like 3 seconds. Refs will almost never call it until a coach says "Watch 42, he's camping in the lane all day." Sure enough, you'll get the call in the next couple possessions. Referees have so many things to watch for that sometimes it's all about the coach just making refs aware. It's a lot of politics. It sucks, but it is.

You might be right but not about the 3 second call. Good officials just won't call it. Tell 42 to move out of the lane, he does & they gets to keep playing.

Preventive officiating makes the call unnecessary.

  16. Benny had a decent game but one game doesn't make a season. Personally I hope we sign Trey as guessing he would jump ahead of Benny in the rotation. I'm not saying I want Benny to leave the team but just think about 5-8 minutes would be about right for his role.

spot on. And i could see trey starting if Tai doesn't improve by next year.

I love the way we talk about real people who sweat & bleed like they're disposable like Klenex. Take one, use it up, discard it and look, there's another one to use up.

I understand boards need things to talk about & us fans can't develope the personal relationships that players & coaches do, & sometimes typed words can be misconstrued, but man can some posts sound cold.

  17.

Is he working his way towards being an NBA draft pick?  Yes.

Is he a future 1st rounder?  Maybe...probably not but maybe.

Should he currently be projected as a first rounder?  lol.

"What are we going to do without Terran next year" is your official thing to waste your time worrying about of the week.

Funny how we've gone from "he's a selfish player, coach needs to sit him"

    to

"what are we going to do if he leaves early for the NBA?"

We need more games to watch/dissect.  Off days are brutal for our psyche.

My thoughts are that I don't remember anyone ever saying sit him. I think that is a technique referred to as a straw man argument. He had shown terrible shot selection and there were times early it was really hurting his team and it needed to improve. Coach Miles addressed this issue (partly by giving him a quick hook at times) and for the most part his selection has gotten much better. I think almost everyone saw right away he was going to be key to our success this year. I think Coach Miles addressing this issue as soon as he did was crucial and it says something about Petteway's character in the positive way he has responded.
